Angels
When I was but a little girl
Each night, as I went to bed
Five angels would look down on me
From a picture above my head,
Mum told me they were a heavenly choir
That would sing as I went to sleep
Their songs, and hymns protection
Against the demons that dare creep
Into my dreams, to give me nightmares
And for that we should kneel and pray
To give thanks to the angels for keeping me safe
Through the night ‘til the break of day,
Time has flown, and I have grown
The picture has long since gone
But Sir Joshua Reynolds’s ‘Cherub Choir’
In my heart will forever live on.
