The 'star of Education'

Like many precious diamonds,
Good teachers are hard to find
Yet sometimes one can discover
A rare and priceless kind,
It’s not like all the others
For it out-shines the rest
You know as soon as you see it
That this stone is the best,
A good teacher is that special gem
They do far more than teach
They make you feel, through learning,
There’s no star you cannot reach
In Art, they help you see differently
From new angles, not straight up and down
They make Geography an adventure
As the world you travel around
In History, they make you feel
You’ve lived and breathed the times
And Math is not sums, but puzzles
To stretch and tone your mind
In English they encourage you
To not just write, but feel
So that each one of your stories
Will read as if it were real,
If you ever have a question
You call and they are there
With patience and understanding
Your problems are theirs, they care
There’s usually one in every school
Superior to the rest
For they’re the ‘Star of Education’
And as such are totally priceless!

Wonderful tribute to teachers, Janette, they are so under rated at times and under paid with the responsibilities they have... great words here in their honor.. I went to Catholic school all my life so I only had nuns to teach me and they did put the "fear of God" into all the students... congrats on your winning poem in the first Anything Goes contest... could not tell who the poet was on Constance's blog yesterday... mine placed 10th Musical Melodies.. HNY 2010 with blessings... luv... LMB

Janette, This poem very beautifully honors those special teachers who live up to the trust that parents give them as their children are sent to school...to learn. God bless these shining stars. Lovingly, Dane Ann

Beautiful sentiment here, Janette. Now if we could just ever pay them what they are worth maybe we'd have higher standards everywhere!! Can't believe we play grown men millions to bounce a ball up and down a court but teachers barely get a living wage in some parts of this country. Now, look you've got me on a roll ... LOL ... thanks for your recent comment ... I was disappointed that they selected that poem to be featured as it needs to be redone ... oh well ... Happy Holidays!!

Oh, so rare is a really great teacher! I can still remember my best teachers...pitiful, but there are only four or five names. I taught school -music- for thirty years. Hope a few of the kids remember me fondly. Enjoyed your write mucho. Love, daver

Beautifully done Janette!.... My oldest daughter is a teacher and I am going to email this to her because I think she is one of those 'special gems' you've described....I can remember every teacher I had going back to the first grade (good and bad or even so-so) Other than my parents, they had more influence on my life than anyone...Tim

Janette, this is an amazing write -an eulogy of a teacher who is gifted with profound qualities of head and heart. Such devoted teachers, no doubt, are more precious than gems. Their pupils are fortunate to be able to drink from their knowledge and vision. Thanks for your comment on my poem 'Do not Knock' featured this week. -Mohammad

The poem is excellent Rhyme and tells a wonderful story. There are exceptional teachers out there. It is also true that all that teach are not the star for sure and some get burnout for sure. Keep the magical and creative pen flowing. Sara

Good teachers are SO important and getting harder and harder to find as they leave education because of low salaries and bad situations. Your lovely poem expresses beautifully the appreciation that everyone should feel towards those who educate our children, who are the future. Very well written! ~Juliane
