I'm Going to the Oscars!!!!

In all the years I've been writing, and apart from on Poetry Soup, I haven't really entered any competitions, but this year I decided to enter the National Association of Writing Groups (UK) annual competition.

There were 12 categories and I sent poems into two of them, posting off my entries not  expecting anything to come of it as there are an awful lot of groups in the association and hundreds and hundreds of entries per category.  Imagine my surprise the other week, when I received an envelope with the NAWG logo on, with a letter inside telling me that one of my poems had been shortlisted to receive a prize. You could have knocked me down with a feather.

This weekend, I shall be going to Robin Hood's home town of Nottingham, to the University there, to attend an Oscar style gala meal and ceremony where I shall learn whether my poem has gained 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. (I've been practising my losers face in the mirror just like the actors do lol).

To say I am excited, would be an understatement and it doesn't matter where my poem is in the shortlist - just to be in the top three out of so many amazing pieces of work is enough for me and has given me confidence in my work.

It has certainly encouraged me to enter into more competitions in the future - you just never know, this just may be the start of something!!!

Oh!! And on top of that, the week after, my daughter rang me to tell me that she and her partner had got engaged and I have a wedding to look forward to - double excitement - my other daughter has had a time of it trying to tie me down lol!!!

Thank you all for your lovely comments - the poem isnt on the soup as the rules were that it couldnt be published including on the internet - I will update you all when the gala is over - fingers crossed :-)
