Top 100 Community Poets - Recent

Blog Posted:4/14/2017 8:51:00 PM

My question what are the criterions.

Are the ranking really computer generated.

The reason I bring this up is that I asked this question in an e-mail

to PS in the past and they replied yes it is computer generated.

Then ...

Are there glitches in the system?

I reread the preface-community builders, active participation in the past two weeks.

That's black and white.

Before going on further ...

Am I allowed to scatch my head?

I look at Brian S how can he not be included?

I look at myself-post a poem on 3/31 and drop 50 spots. Three days later I'm out. Still am.

What gives? Who gives?

To me it's an insult to see others that are not even coming close to fulfilling

the criterions being included while others are left out. Cry? Yes. It's my perrogrative.

The purpose of this blog is to seek a resoltion and/ or answers.

Hey Connie-- Your blog elicited a conversation which I continued on another blog: the role of feedback in a community of poets. Also, a few years ago, I was disappointed that Poetrysoup did not award Brian S. with a lifetime membership as a reward for his tireless efforts to support poets on Soup. His blogs on the nature of poetry, his contests, the information he shared... were and are commendable. He has never been driven to be on a list and he is one of the most humble poets I've ever had the pleasure to "meet" on poetrysoup, yet he is a good poet with a deep understanding of poetics. So, I understand your frustration... think of him as I do... a poet's poet, a friend, a GENT. :)

Hello. I agree. I see myself here as a little squirrel fighting over a leftover nut that fell on the ground. Do I need it? Of course not. But do I want to nip at their pant leg? Yes. Why? Just to play with them in the same manner they do with me. They* can be described as someone I possibly know. As for my avatar. Just say I had to sneak back in and dress up in a whole new makeup and disguise.

I always think of a step as something you abandon, completely. Certainly, it can give poets a leg-up. Soup reminds me of the "Cheers" bar where everybody knows your name (and a few are glad you came.) We can drop by, say Hullo, visit...

Hi there. I didn't read all the comments below so I'm not sure if anyone touched on this. Though I'm sure many mentioned comments on poems, I believe at some point I read (years ago) that community points are also gathered by sponsoring contests. There used to be a ridiculous point counter where people could see accumulated points- comments left, contests won in the top 10 etc etc The site is different things to different people... we make it what it is. If you want it to be about being on a list, you can be on a list. If you want it to be about posting and reading poetry, socializing and developing as a poet, Soup has room for that, as well. It's all on how you see it...

I don't have a dog in this fight for lack of a better phrase, but I just want to know who is over the website? I read all of these comments about "they" and I was under the impression that the profiles shown on the home page of the website were the ones who created the site and maintained it. I realized this was not the case and now I wonder why don't we hear anything from the webmasters? Is their identity supposed to be hidden? Is it like a cyber religion where members have faith they exist and they speak through burning blogs? Just kidding. It was just a joke, but I do think a lot of confusion could be cleared up if the creators would just give an explanation of how the full site works.

You can send them a "Soup Mail" via the link at the bottom of the page. They make money from the site and want to do the absolute minimum...

I post 5 to 7 poems a week. Whether those count toward community building, I don't have a clue. They used to give community points in general. I was over a million and proud of that. But last year they got rid of our points. I felt very sad but I could do nothing about it. I do not even try to be top community builder. I usually end up in that spot simply because I enjoy commenting back to every single person who reads my poetry. When I have extra time, I veer over to new poems list and try to see poets I have never read before. I work and have many other responsibilities and yet I find time to be here at least an hour a day. Mostly reading folks' poems. I applaud all who make such efforts.

by the way. the community points Soup took away from us all did not amount to anything but a number, however, they included ALL our activity here: contest sponsoring, which I used to do a lot of, blogging, etc. I really miss those points. They did not even have a special list for THOSE. They could have made a list to show those points and not take them away from us. That is MY only gripe for the day!!
Date: 4/15/2017 3:32:00 PM
I just looked up if there were any rules to denote what it means by "community participation." They give no specific rules. When I came here right before 2009, I assumed community building to mean making comments to others. I see people posting tons of poems every day and they are not worth my time because there is no thought to a person's writing if he is posting tons of poems that fast. Also, he is making others poems scroll OFF the list of poems to see. How can that be called Community building? Some people who have been tops in "most poems" are actually reposting the same poems over and over again (I saw this for myself) So in my opinion, THAT list is the one to be complaining about.

Connie, I think there's nothing nefarious going on.The ratings seem to be computer generated based on the commenting activity and don't seem to take the number of own poems posted into account, nor do they consider contest sponsorship or participation. At least this is the conclusion at which I have arrived looking at these. It may be an unfortunate choice of name to call it community builders, because some ways to build community do not factor in, but I don't think the ratings are fudged. We just should not take them too seriously.

I've arrived at same conclusion as you have, Agnes. I noticed this right away when If first came here. I worked my tail off and in just two short weeks I had arrived at the top of community builder list. It was Xmas holiday and I was averaging maybe 200 comments a day. Some days I am here two hours or more. I am obsessed. The key is to have an addicting personality. I give my all to my passions, movies, food, books, you name it. I give it my all!! There is nothing nefarious going on at Soup They are simply rewarding ADDICTS.

Agnes, I agree except that posting one's own poems definitely is counted. No question about that.

brian. i'm just upset. I would advocate your cause till they kick me out. i have the utmost respect for you-you epitomize community builder, you're tops on both contest and blogs, posting 4500 poems in the last 10 yrs., educating reader (like me), stirring the pot, soliciting feedback ... everything - YOU ARE THE BEST and to see you not get the respect its mind boggling to me. imo you should be a perennial top 10. for all that you do it trumps whatever criterion this site uses.

Thanks Connie The real community builders here on PS are self evident to everyone who visits daily. The bloggers, contest sponsors those who contribute by entering contests for me that is the stat that matters the most.We love this place by being active here in those ways.Have a good creative day
Date: 4/15/2017 3:25:00 AM
Connie as Doug says below I rarely comment on poems,I prefer to sponsor contests and in that way I read many more poems of my peer poets here .As for PS community stats ,they are irelevant in the big picture on this topic.Posting blogs, comenting thereon, sponsoring contests are what has always made PS a must visit place in the poetry world.Have a blessed Easter.

Another way of building community has been to come up with suggestions to improve the site. Some poets have created new forms or introduced poets to forms rarely used. Some have been community builders by promoting good will -- cooling hot heads (like mine ;) ) No points for many of those things. Only a better community.
Macmillan Avatar
Cyndi Macmillan

That being said, YES, community points here on the Soup are also gained by hosting (sponsoring) contests. One person sponsors a contest, another comments on 40 poems a day, another hosts a blog about poetic devices, another posts a blog wishing happy birthday --- all are done in the spirit of "community." and all are equally important.

Just took some time to read some of these comments. I think there are dozens of ways that ALL communities are built (and I'm not just talking about a web community.)

Can't really agree, Tom. The contests are a significant part of the PoetrySoup community, no? Many people enjoy them and participate...

Tom, okay - I guess I can agree a little bit - I would disagree that PS community stats are irrelevant in the big picture, since I think that responding to poems is important. Still, these are quick comments on a blog thread, and there's no way I can see to fault Brian, overall.

TS My contests have no specific theme because I prefer to read what the muse has put upon folk's heart to write and which they then choose what to enter.Other sponsors prefer to have a theme ,its their choice .I don't ask anyone to imitate me.I do believe though that community is built by participation by the many.

The below said, I also agree that reading and commenting is very important. I see vast numbers of poems with zero comments, sometimes with 50 to over 150 views. That has to be disheartening for many people; I'd say especially so for newer members.

Tom, just as sure as we are different individuals, there is plenty of room for different approaches here. Nobody is saying that others have to proceed exactly as Brian does, and there is no way I can denigrate him - say what you will, he at the least certainly "puts in his time," so to speak.

Yes, some comments in and of themselves are not very deep, but sometimes it is just nice to see that somebody read it and took the time to let me know. It's not critique. It can be simply a signal"hey, I am listening to what you have to say " and that can feel encouraging.

The website owners want traffic. The more hits and the more clicks on ads, the more money they get from advertisements. Posting poems and commenting works toward higher numbers.
Date: 4/14/2017 11:46:00 PM
Connie, main thing is how much commenting on others' poems one does. Not sure if blog or forum stuff is counted, and if so, if there's any difference in weighting. Doesn't matter if one has been on PoetrySoup for a week, a month, ten years - main thing is the amount of activity over the past two weeks. We're limited in how many poems we can post, per day, but we're not limited on how many comments we can make. That's why you see Bernard F. Asuncion currently at #22. Most days he puts up the maximum of 10 poems. I rarely see him comment on others' poems. Brian Strand doesn't comment on many other people's poems, either - there's your explanation.

"Seniority" means nothing. It's all in the aggregate 'count' the server has for a member - for sure posting poems and comments on other people's poems are counted. Not sure about forum/blog stuff. If somebody did 200 - 300 events that are counted, for 2 days in a row, I think you'd see them high up - top 5 likely. My opinion; I don't have direct knowledge of how the server counts.
Date: 4/14/2017 11:21:00 PM
case in point-theres 2. 1 in the top 10, another in the 20's. fresh off the farm. the one in the 20's has been a member for a week, the other two weeks. how do they rise so fast? it goes against the two week threshold. personally i think weight should be given to senior members that are actively participating.
