Disco Music

Strobe light looks like moon-sun.
Halo lights of red, blue, yellow, green.
He wears classic Saturday Night Fever white.
She has a white flower in her hair,
head and hips swivel;
one-strapped red dress.
He points with hands over head.
Ballroom floor bittersweet-blue.
Celebration of disco music.

I was dressed in strapless purple.
Burned my bra.
This stamp doesn’t nearly catch
the falderal - not the nasal and falsetto
of the Bee Gees, nor the confident swagger
of Tony Manero. I will survive, my motto.

The couple on this stamp look too happy,
too peppy, maybe preppy, almost ‘50’s.

I remember the crowds, the loudness,
the vulnerability, the period; that Mom
had me ask Dad for money to go.
They let me. Strobe light shadows
of chiaroscuro amidst flashy night.
The stamp is too clean cut.

Premium MemberThe Clash Of Sane And Bane

Beyond the hills, the storm,
oh, yellow queens they quake;
poor Autumn aspens feel
old weight of weakened leaves
the hostile winds will steal.

Beyond the hills the storm
it brews, like coffee black.
A bitter sky will fall
—dainty saintly sunlight
a martyr for the squall…

Beyond the hills the storm,
My dreams in strobe-light flash.
Engage in shadow dance
the clash of sane and bane;
a silk and burr romance.

Beyond the hills the storm—
yes banshee gonna wail!
The gray steel rain a strafe
a suitor six-shooter.
My tongue; a silent waif.

Eden of my eye
Beauty in culture of ten million
Garden of my eye
Haven of brethren and sistren

Values never weakened, in words spoken
Freedom strengthened, heritage golden

Sprinkled love in dynamite
Ceilings of heaven in stalactites
Grounds softened by stalagmites
Citizens' history, written in strobe light

Magnets of loving people
Ore of the grounds supple
Blanket of salvation
Tablet and core of the nation

Enjoy the Trip

Goblins dance across the wire
With blood red eyes and wings of fire
They beckon me to join their game
Join in the buzz and kiss the flame

My journey’s only just begun
The purple sky ignites the sun
We’ve chased the dragon – he’s on the run
Now flying high and having fun

The strobe light penetrates my brain
As music pulses through my veins
Got no more cares- Got no more fear
Coz everything I needs right here

I’ll take you where you’ve never been
Beyond the boundaries of all dreams
A mystery tour – enjoy the show
We’ll cut a line and share some blow

Enjoy the buzz – the music’s loud
Escape the madness of the crowd
But first of all let’s score a hit
Follow me – enjoy the trip

I’m flying high and looking down
In freefall now – I hit the ground
The spider laughs and spins her web
There’s no way out – she’s in my head

My body heaves and starts to shake
This nightmare dream I can’t escape
The spider whispers “your time has come
You’re in my web – my turn for fun”

The goblins’ stare – they point and jeer
Now relishing my wretched fear
We make a deal – I pay their toll
My life now spent – They take my soul.

Premium MemberTrouble Below the Patapsco River

big bulbs flashed like a discotheque strobe light.
it’s always midnight.
his breath filled the cavernous abyss.
his heart at risk of jumping to its death.
the shell of his flesh colder than a poikilotherm.
shudder of his lens.
a missing eye, a snake besides.
the hair on his arms like spikes.

why’d he follow trouble below the Patapsco River?
his eyes blood orange like the eagle owl.
too late to remember that curiosity killed the cat.
the narrow way wolf gray and white.

the body left in the open. the killer knew
he attracted an extra hide, and Justin
knew he was being hunted. this tunnel abandoned
since the lockdown. he followed the dodge
which had a hand hanging out through the brake light
red and waving.

he witnessed the whisk,
away the icy serpent flew.
Justin could feel his hot breath
the beast with centipede eyes.

he knows he’ll never make it out alive
even as he takes shot after shot.

the scream, the screech
of a van down the street.
he jumps in.
Go! Go! Go!

the tire wheels spin and smoke.
no time to choke.

van stops —
the director yells cut

Destroyer

Butterfly arms and legs take flight,
Silk shirt flares under the strobe light.

He wears a smirk.
He can have any girl on the floor.
So he switches partner for every song.
His moves are smoother than his tongue.

He's a supernova of the dance scene.
He's a heart breaker,
Atmosphere destroyer.

He'll leave you to sit alone.
He'll crush your heart
Which beats next to his
When he holds you to his chest.

He's a heart breaker,
Atmosphere destroyer.
He's a supernova
Of the dance scene.

rhythm
writhing along ~
arms coiling, finger snaps,
free wheeling waist undulating.
strobe light creates a scene otherworldly,
bathed in the shadow of romance.
our eyes and hips touching,
and lips humming...

Premium MemberOh, Christmas Tree

OH, CHRISTMAS TREE

Denial covers its tracks -
clouding the memory.
SILVER, it was freakin’ SILVER!!!
Glittering, glossy, garish, tin foil, SILVER!!
Required no ornamentation,
no tinsel tossing, no death
defying wiring, only a spinning
rainbow disk to splash
crayola colored lights
upon SILVER branches.
It resembled a fringed
strobe light hanging
from an inverted ceiling.
I would imagine
Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders
shaking silver Pom-Poms
cheering it on.
There would be therapy,
recurring dreams –
lost in a tinsel silver forest
on a distant Christmas Eve.
When we threw it out
I placed it in front of
someone else’s house.
Occasionally,
at Christmas,
someone will ask:
“Do you remember…..”
only to be pounced upon
and silenced -
Denial covers its tracks.

STORM OF PRAYERS

Air reeks of dragon’s esteem ‘longside cyclonic wings of courage.

Strobe light-shadow rivals ~ swords thunder, silver flashing, flooding clouds.

Regret of demons ~ cherub tear drops plummet to earth, heart-shaped.

Premium MemberPerfecting Vowels

I WILL CROON THE VOWELS
kneeling in church, arm around my angel girl.
my son’s propped up on pew, chewing gum.
the oldest tries to pray, the grownup way.
LIKE THE ANGELS DO
we belt out tunes for thirty minutes,
mama’s eyes closed, one eye strobe light blinking
quiet “sh sh” like the soft spoken wind.
WITHOUT THEIR HALO SWOONS,
those baby bonnets on sideways,
bent, just halfway toward sin,
but precious are those little hands,
look like steeples,
voice chaste as the trio say “amen.”
JUST PLAIN HALLELUJAHS,
“Jesus loves me this I know”
why do children sound heavenly?
especially with eyes closed and
silent snores, tears dripping from mama’s eyes.
WITHOUT THE SURROUND SOUND
swish swish goes the bridal gown -
losing daughters gaining daughter in-laws.
those once bubblegum popping boys,
dapperly dressed up, have made their choice.
EFFECTS, CERTAINLY NOT IN TUNE
and celestial hallelujahs, spur on the stars and moon.
silver spoons saved for christenings,
beneath angel’s wings,
veiling the scarcely innocent.
babies bathed in baptism, as grandma grins,
and prays, shushing the wind.

Another Round

I drag myself in to a dark cold room.
Suddenly the strobe light comes on,
 Flashing around like white lightning.
My head starts to spin, I feel nauseous.
Every millisecond of light reveals a face,
 Different faces flash around me,
Some of them I haven’t seen for a while,
Some of them I come across each day.
I feel a blow to my stomach,
Another one to my head, it keeps on coming.
The stinging pain hits my soul,
 I can’t hide, I can’t defend.
Blow after blow, hit after hit.
 It seems familiar, the pain.
 And then it stops, gone.
No strobe light, no faces, no hits.
Pain still lingers, slowly fading away.
 And the light appears,
Coming from an old dimmed light bulb.
 I see mirrors around me,
 Dusty cracked mirrors,
And the face, the bloated disgusting face.
Eyes full of tears, with no life in them.
I light up a cigarette, my knuckles bleeding.
I look and I know there’s no way to run,
No way out of this room,
 No safe path to take.

Jimmy Buffet-Coral Reefers

10,000 people gathered on the beach that day
as he entered the stage wearing sandals he'd say,
"WOW! look at YOU come to lend a hand"
Then he grabbed his guitar to strike up his band

Ten thousands strong held their drinks in the air
in hopes to raise money for the Gulf Oil scare
The Sun was his strobe light, speakers the same
Today is the day they all shout Jimmy's name!

But far above the crowd the choppers did film
while boats bobbed at sea just looking at him
for he'd travelled the world though mostly by boat
His love of the Sea meant a stick that could float

Yes there were women, wine, stogies and beer
along with his reefers he'd never known fear
Though quite famous his words as you see,
"If the phone doesn't ring. . . . it's me!"

Caged Lion

Lying about a lion
Crying inside my heart, dying
No longer fighting
Don't bother trying
Don't bother reviving
No longer wanting
To be without you

There was a time when it ran brave
There was a time that you had it in a craze
This lion was untamed but you
You made it a willing slave
Made it behave in a way
That made me think I was saved
Passionate days came rolling in
In waves
And waves
And waves
Every encounter was a strobe-light rave
Your love was like a labyrinth maze
It was all so confusing
It was all so new to me
Loving you so openly
Intimate and totally
I was finally saved
Open and free to roam and misbehave
To act and roar brave
My animal strength making you feel safe
But those are long ago memories
Remnants of many a yesterday
I talk of this moment
Where I'm stuck in a cage of today

Lying about a lion
Crying inside my heart, dying
No longer fighting
Don't bother trying
Don't bother reviving
No longer wanting
To be without you
