News Report Poems

Premium MemberBehind The Curve

Do you need me as much as fish
A waterproof raincoat would need?
A piece of salmon on your dish
Is dressed with sprouts and beet
You watch the breaking news report
One candidate withdrew
His rival did survive from shot
Looks like he’s getting through
The world will get what it deserves
You vaguely think of this
And there I am, behind the curve
Still casually exist
I’d love to come across the floor
To see your face again
Why you mistreat me like a foe
Unblock my weary brain
The words are said, the deeds are done
All days belong to you
And all the evenings, when the sun
Tints up your eyes with blue.

My Life Is a Dystopia

I am being forced to live
With horrible malformations
On my body
In my body
I am stuck with them for years
For who knows how long

The people want me dead
Simply for existing
They claim it is in the name of the children
But I am a child
Being forced to grow up

And I am not the only one
There are millions of us they want arrested
Or simply put to sleep
But that is too nice a word
For what they want

They want us dead
In their claim of righteousness
We want to live
Without the horrible mutilations
That we had forced upon us

They claim it's in the name of life
Yet children are shot in the streets
And the places meant to be safe
Are hotgrounds of violence and death
All we want is to live
As children are meant to do

They let children be parents
But they won't let us save our own lives
We are too young to know who we are
Yet old enough to tell someone else?

There is no possible way
For me to afford a roof over my head
But if I were to take my chances
On the streets
I would be thrown in jail or shot
For the crime of being there

I am being killed
In the name of life
And all this was only
From one news report

Premium MemberThe Destination

My eyes open to the feeling of the warm sunshine glow
The bed feels so good that getting up will be slow
Peering through my bedroom window and seeing there isn’t any snow
The news report was again a no show
I go into the shower, watching the drain take away the soapy water flow
Dry myself off with a rag towel combo
Get dressed and put on my hand made boots from the people of Navajo
I hop into my car, turn on the audio and begin to drive with gusto
To where, I don’t know
Zipping, passing a few vehicles in a row
Telling myself, hope none of my tires blow
I see up ahead a stop n go
Thinking of a hot cup of coffee or espresso
Definitely feeling hungry for a gyro
A pick up truck passes me by with loud music playing the classic Lionel Richie song, “Hello”
Triggering a memory from a long time ago
Snapping back into reality, looking at my rear view mirror, it is too late, I’ve passed it like a tornado
I quickly feel for my wallet, I forgot it! at home is my dough
Get back home soon without getting pulled over for no driver’s license to operate my pinto
Home is destination incognito

Ingenuity

Across a red planet Martian sky
Flying in an alien atmosphere on high
Such a little craft with our eye
A wonder so far from home to fly

What will you see about the plain
A dry place without a spot of rain
Will their be strange eyes looking at you
As you fly past without noticing too

Perhaps there may be a news report
On an alien broadcast retort
Of a UFO flying mysteriously
And wondering what on Mars it would be.

Premium MemberAnother Kind of Virus

There's another virus going around.

Flustered by everything COVID-19;
I am grateful I still have a job,
but grumpy I have to drive there in the rain -
I need to get to the fast lane or I'll be late...

What's this?
A driver slowing down to let me in their lane
with a smile and a friendly wave.

A news report of teenagers with cellos and violins
playing a quartet on the porch of their
"self-isolating" elderly neighbor.

A good Samaritan
giving away toilet paper
to whomever has need.

The new guy in our coffee co-op
making a pot of decaf while
grinding beans for the high-octane pot AND
cleaning out the sink.

A friend sending out an email
asking How is everybody?
Knowing we're all hanging on by a thread

Please infect me with this kindnessvirus
I want to pass it around

To and Fro

He couldn’t fit his shopping cart
And suitcase through the door
And screamed at the conductor
(Quite a challenge to ignore).

Once seated, he spread out and then
Removed his socks and shoes.
Assessing just how nuts he was,
This added to the clues.

I glanced his way and sorrily,
I somehow caught his eye.
He then began describing
That the air was awful. Why?

The radiation on the train
Was there to make us sick,
But only some could feel it –
Those intelligent and slick.

I transferred cars while he still raved
And finished out my ride
In uneventful fashion
‘Til the trip home did provide

Another whacko, eating fries
And blaring on her phone
A news report in which
A screeching baby had been shown.

Incessantly, that baby wailed;
She played it on a loop.
I hoped that some brave soul
Would to the rescue somehow swoop.

But no – I had to listen
For we urbanites pretend
That it’s normal on the subway
For the crazies to offend.

A Schmutzy Day

The weatherman's announcement: "Hey,
It's gonna be a schmutzy day!
With howling winds and rain in sheets,
It won't be fun on city streets.

This news report just wouldn't fly
In other places; this is why -
I live in New York's melting pot
Where Yiddish words are used a lot

And "schmutzy" is a word we'd use.
(It's not restricted to the Jews.)
To all of you across the nation
Who may need this in translation -

Schmutzy days you take in stride
If you can snuggle up inside.

Ways of the World

The ways of the world today are out of control
so much going on that doesn't set well with my soul
people in positions of power making decisions that's wrong
and in the midst of what's happening we're all being strung along

People getting crazier as the days go by
as I sit and think it over it brings about a sigh
what is this world of ours coming to be
not looking very good as far as my eye can see

Every other news report is ending with a crime
it sure would be nice to hear good news from time to time
so used to hearing about tragedy that it comes as no surprise
or at least that's how it appears when our faces wear a disguise

The ways of the world today are out of control
as we sit back and watch the story unfold
Lets hope that in the future it will all end up well
because what's ahead for us only time will tell.

Doa

I got a phone call from the police
saying I was dead
That was news to me,
getting shot four times in the head
Within the hour the rumor had spread,
hey, did you hear about Fred

They thought Freddie was dead,
Freddie was dead
DOA was what the police report said

They thought Freddie was dead,
Freddie was dead
DOA was what the news report said

I hope you never lose your driver's license,
the one without the photo ID
A criminal could become you, technically

Mistaken identity
can give you and your family
a whole lot of stress

A causeless calamity
is something we can all agree
creates an awful mess

So if you ever get a wrong phone call,
telling you that you died that day
Missing your own funeral is perfectly okay

Premium MemberSummer Afternoon

summer afternoon
palest blue sky dotted white...
a thunderstorm ripped by screams

policeman lies pale
scarlet blood saturates shirt...
tear stains upon children's clothes

twenty years have passed
memories lie buried deep...
news report opens sutures

Blind Reality Ii

Blind Reality II!

What's this I see, on the TV?
Man with a gun! That nobody sees;
Running for his life, just longing to be free!

What's this I see, on the TV?
So many shots! How could this be?
One, two, three and more! Is it really necessary?

What's this I see, on the TV?
No weapon, no resistance, no threat, you see;
Another young man down! So hard to believe!
What’s this I see, on the TV?
A news report, that the assassins are still free!
This is so sad, our condolences to the families!

What’s this I see, on TV?
Fear, hatred and disrespect! Would you not agree?
This is a real catastrophe!

Where you ask, is their focus? It’s shadowed in Blind Reality!!!

Upset

A tennis player loses
And they say he’s been upset.
Well, naturally, I understand
Upset is what he’d get.

This term is never utilized
In any other sport.
At least, I’ve never heard it
In the sporting-news report.

“The Yankees were upset tonight,”
Implies they were in tears.
“The Knicks were so upset, they sobbed
In consolation beers.”

You’d never hear The Giants
Or the Cowboys got upset,
Yet tennis players publicly
Get linked with their regret.

I wonder how this word, so sad,
Became the one they use.
Would tennis players rather
Be upset or just plain lose?

A News Report

In France, on Friday the fourteenth of February a famous French family flamed fires in a faulty fireplace causing a frightening fire. Fresco street friends fretfully watched as fifty fabulous firemen fought furiously the ferocious flashing flames. Finally, at four o'clock in the afternoon the fatigued firemen finished fighting the frightening flames and the filthy firetrucks fled off to the fire station.

3/10/12

mild weather ahead
so says the news report
except for the wind
that frozen voice from the north
button up then till april

conjure now green vision
how happy those spring sounds
tulips thrusting up
refreshing smell of spring rain
just a winter’s nap away

Voices In My Head

Did I tell you, I hear voices in my head,
“Kill, kill,” I think that’s what they said.
Spoke to my therapist but then she disappeared,
Police questioned me, which I found weird.

She’d been stabbed sixty times outside her front door,
They called me in again and questioned me some more.
That morning I woke covered in blood
I buried the evidence near the marsh, in the mud

I sat at home, the voices loud in my head,
As the news report said now one hundred women dead.
The voices etching the same word like a razor sharp quill,
In my brain, “Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill.”

I need fresh air, on this lovely, hot summer’s night
But I find I’m standing behind the couch, watching you in plain site
Turn around, look, you’ll see me with a knife
Watch closely while I slowly take away your life…

See you soon
