PLAGIARISM OR PARODIES?

Blog Posted:2/20/2016 5:48:00 AM

Recently on soup i've noticed a growing concern regarding Plagiarism especially when surfing the net, as well as other poetry sites and also here on soup. I believe there is  a fine line between The two issues, but at the end of the day feel at least, the original author should always be informed and ask for permission as  common decency.   There is nothing worst than going to a poem (That rings a rings a bell instantly) whether word for word or a play on one's own words.

Here is my take on the subject which i have just posted, short but hopefully to the point, and yes i took the theme from an article i once read in a book, but sadly the author Anon was beneath it..

PLAGIARISM OR PARODIES?

Oh do those with their poetry beguile others thunder

Mock gracious words with a false-hearted pen,

Yes the vampires of our poetic stage some would call a blunder

When to suck the blood from far more noble; wiser (Wo) men!

In order for parody to truly work, the new work usually pokes at something which is very familiar to the general public. Think "the count" on sesame street. Dracula is a classic and the parody works. If I were to write ... "Should I compare you to a dung pile, thou art far more stinky and more full-of-it. " It is basically understood as parody-- which also has a sort of TONE, mostly humorous and cutting. In order for the reader to be in on the joke, they need to understand the original source. Plagiarism is to use another persons words and keep those exact words in the exact order and then claim they were written by you. My work has been used by students, but I have been credited.:)

Last one :) I have submitted to a notable journal a reply to the Desiderata by Mark Ehrmann which actually contradicts it. I took a well known piece and went in the opposite direction, but referenced the original. Gotta fly... good blog, Harry! PPS- Not sure if Raleigh asked permission or just "went for it." ;)

Here on Soup, Chris Aechtner's On the Wings of Moogsmoorwood inspired me to write a "reply." Mine is "Whispers of Moogmoorwood." I asked and received permission to write the reply and it was my way of paying highest respect to another poet, saying,"what you did, there, was AWESOME."

The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlowe inspired the Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd by Sir Walter Raleigh.

PS-- In poetry, there is even a way to "REPLY" to another poets work, to contradict it and it is neither parody nor plagiarism... its a kind of tip of the hat while thumbing the nose. Use "After" and reference the original work.

Harry I appreciate your blog. Thank you for sharing. Credit should always be given to the original writer or even given credit to a write that sparked someone else's write.

Harry, I have occasionally used the title or a line from a "soupers" poetry as the theme or inspiration for another poem. I always credit the original author and thank them for spurring the muse to action. I do believe that there are times when words and phrases of similar content are purely coincidental phenomena.

that is what we always have to remember to do, give credit for a line's inspiration. I see nothing wrong with using one little phrase as long as it is credited!

Harry, I think it is a very fine line that we all walk as writers. I enjoyed your poem that was inspired by an unknown writer. As we fade into history, maybe our words will become "anon" as new generations borrow them to write anew. However, it would sure be nice to have one's very own name go down in history like a Poe or a Robert Frost! All humanity has had a thought that we have had at least one time in the history of this enormous earth. However, to blatantly take the exact same words used to express that thought and steal them the way they were written or to take whole lines and intersperse them with one's own verse is stooping very low. I've seen it done here at Soup and it's NOT NICE.

OMG, a student wanted to use your poem, Catie, to hand in to her teacher? What an idiot. I have been honored to have a few teachers ask to use my poem to show to their students to teach a certain poetry form. That is the joy of being here. Soup has our poem well represented and categorized too. I have been approached to have Tale of Fire can Ice used again for a video. this time some students are just doing it for a school project. I love this kind of thing when it happens to me. Just hope my name is displayed. The last guy gave me very little recognition on that video he made for a film festival. He did give me props but my name was hardly seen.
