Snowdrops

You blossom too soon dear snowdrops of spring Secluded in the cold dark earth; The white flakes that fly still haunt the sky Too weary with sorrow to salute your birth. One warm day awakened you from sleep And sang with springtime’s soft breath; Caressed your eyes with the lips of spring And you awakened to winter in the arms of death. Where is the due she pledged to you The passion of sun and song of the breeze; The frilled hyacinth with heavy perfume And the robin’s merry note in the trees? Birds are yet hushed and the branch is yet bare The snowflakes fall on the crest of the hill; Your sodden petals lie pressed on the ground Without warmth when winter kept his chill. The snowflakes conceal the spot where you lie Living too soon in a winter's cold noon They are covered with snow so no one will know The grave of the snowdrops that flowered too soon.

Dear Elizabeth... as another reviewer noted, there is much melancholy in this piece. However, you are that rare poet who can blend beauty with melancholy seamlessly and effortlessly, and create work that has so much more depth and commitment. This is extraordinary...

Dear Liz, To be able to write a poem with such beauty you must have an artist's eye and a poet's heart. I love the compassion you convey for the lovely snowdrops. You become the flower and their voice and I am enchanted by the depth of your talent, not to mention extremely impressed! This lovely keepsake is going into my favorites.

A baren winter lies in wait for these spectacular signs of spring. Love the variant white ones the most...I think there are 75 different varieties of these lil gals..they look like they have petticoats on. Then there is the rare blue on that'll see. All these are my fav signs of early spring. Thanks for this soothing poem. Gwendolen

The line 'the passion of sun and song of the breeze;' is quite charming. The whole poem is true to form excellent as always Elizabeth. My mind takes me many different directions with its meaning and I have yet to rest on one of my own. Well done.
