In the Sun's Last Glow

On her terrace where she once had viewed a crimson field, she stands recalling heroes who were battling their foe. She still can feel the terror! How her poor heart reeled thinking of her lover fighting on the field below, with others on that plain bathed red as the sun dipped low. The brave men lie in caskets which now are concealed beneath a plain that ran with blood, where bright irises now grow. She thinks of her own strong brave man, draped in white and sealed forever in a casket too. He was her Romeo. The sorrow flooding her she had never thought to know. She looks down from her terrace with a heart that won’t be healed. The mighty dead now lie in grassy fields. . . and lo! Around the graves are swords, which are green blades revealed with *purple flags that softly wave as a May wind starts to blow and she is bathed in red again, there in the sun’s last glow. * Purple flags refer to the name of the purple iris that resembles a flag Submitted for Mark Toney's '2019 Poetry Marathon Mile 25' Contest

It's very beautiful how you wrap this up with the green blades, purple flags, and the mourner bathed in red of sunset's glow. So poignant and moving. Great work using all these rhymes without any feeling forced.

Such an emotionally moving poem, Andrea. A mighty fine example of this elegant poem form. Ty for the poetess note regarding "purple flags." It enhanced my understanding of this richly sublime poem very much. Tho' I do love cryptic mystery rune stone words and phrases in a poem. Makes me do mental exercise to ascertain the deeper meaning conveyed by a talented poet or poetess. I think I would've figured it out ... swords/green blades ... purple flags/softly wave. Beautiful poetry. Love and hugs.

Hi Andrea, excellence flows from your pen once again. There are mixed feelings when one loses a loved one in battle. There shall always be the sorrow. The overriding emotion is always sadness. This poem is so well written. I Love the emotional content. One feels as if one is there in the scene. This is a seven Andrea. Hugs....Mike. XX

This is metaphorically beautiful, Andrea, and your treatment of this English Quintain makes this form look easy, which in fact it isn't. Congratulations on being placed first! // paul

Thanks for your comment, Stephen. I have been published. I just grew jaded from the "poetry magazine" world not wanting to pay for poems and from getting chapbooks published but not being able to market them to the public, so only friends and relatives bought them. I just enjoy these days entering contests. But I really should look into contests that pay money. I used to do that in the old days and I was such a thrill to win money along with the certificates!!
