My Hunting Hobby

I'm a hunter, but mostly for wild mushrooms nowadays. It adds an additional layer of interest to my hiking and puts some delicious food on the table as well. I've been doing it over 35 years now, here in Georgia, as well as in Italy when we go. Here's some photos, all of mushrooms I have collected within a 10 mile radius of my house here in Woodstock. Nam, nam, nam...

You make me hungry looking at all these beautiful mushrooms Roy...I dearly love all sorts of 'shrooms ! and I would LOVE to have all these available to me in the woods...maybe I should get a mushroom book and head for the woods!

Your best bet is to find a local club or someone in your area to learn from. Mushroom identification takes time. There are a few excellent genera that are easy, however. Morels and chanterelles are a good starting point, then boletes, which have a few simple rules. Stay AWAY from gilled mushrooms until you become experienced.

Some of my best morel collecting was in the Ozarks, around West Plains, MO. I lived in Rolla, MO and then St. Louis. Fished in those clear streams for trout and smallmouth and gigged suckers in season.

Cool, Roy! I once found the motherload of golden morels! Was dryin' em all over my apt! Lotsa "death caps" up here in the woods...I bring a couple field books with me....many false positives! My girls make me eat'im first! Jimbo (cool photos!)

Boy, I wish I could find more of them down here! They are the best, excluding truffles. I'm so envious of the harvests from the upper and middle Midwest and Canada.

wow, wow, I think I've seen that hen of the woods it keeps coming up on the buried stump of I tree I cut down which is under mulch! man I'd be too scared to eat any of those!

Yeah, there are several polypores that resemble it, but it grows only next to the trunk of living oak trees in the wild. The Japanese name is Maitake. Sometimes you can find the cultivated version as a side in upscale restaurants nowadays.

This is sure an interesting thing to hunt for. I've never been terribly fond of mushrooms but I like the ordinary ones on pizza. I remember our church youth group when I was very young went out one evening hunting mushrooms and the joy in cooking them up.

I pretty much don't buy mushrooms anymore as I can usually freeze enough to last me. On top of that, the cultivated ones just don't compare in flavor. Not even close.
