I’ve Just Seen a Face
my first selection
I become more than I am
for the contest
I sing without the prompts
and make the lyrics mine.
I'm happy to have the day off.
Neon lights shine in the window
as other patrons watch
and someone throwing darts
pauses to take a look.
Free deli sandwiches
and chips on a table—
a special night to partake.
My second, Lady Madonna,
a slice of life for some.
I take a sip of my drink.
A former manager watches,
and I must admit I can never
be truly myself at the store.
The DJ says we all are winners
although only two will move on.
I receive a pat on the back
after the audience lost themselves
while watching me.
I had sung two songs
but someone sitting at the bar
said my music called for another.
A light in the parking lot
shines a star.

Ah, such nostalgic nights,
Twirled in skirt, wearing tights,
Music soothed our soul,
We sang along to Rock'N" Roll,
Jiving with our thunderthighs,
Supper, plates of fries,
Our tunes--"Mama Mia" too,
Does Abba mean much to you?
Part of "Kultcha" in our land,
Nostalgic nights, Karaoke band,
Good, clean wholesome fun,
Boomers in our setting sun!

I choose to sing
a gentle song
in a soft ballad
I find my time and place.
A gentle song
in peace and love
I find my time and place
on a makeshift stage.
In peace and love
in subtleties of verse
on a makeshift stage
a new life I create.
In subtleties of verse
and in nuances of lyrics
a new life I create
intimacy found.
And in nuances of lyrics
feelings of my heart are conveyed
intimacy found
my performances graded and scored.
Feelings of my heart are conveyed
as I take my turn.
I chose to sing
a gentle song.

Mobile ring tones at morning light,
disturb the shapes under covers,
the outlined echoes of last night,
two star-crossed microphone lovers,
drawn from opposite ends of town,
yesterday’s pub entertainers,
way on down at the Old Three Crowns,
they met singing Gloria Gaynor,
ramped and amped with emotion,
to songs that belonged in the haze,
now wake to face their commotion,
the music of separate ways.

music lingers
streetlights
shine stars
man and woman
sleeping in shadows
the library’s closed
an intimate voice
on the radio
as I drive home
midnight
the spell is cast
midnight
as I drive home
on the radio
an intimate voice
the library’s closed
sleeping in shadows
man and woman
shine stars
streetlights
music lingers

I came to her one night
like she came to me
softly and with a whisper
she said she had
a three-year-old daughter
at home.
The dining porch was a stage
where we lost ourselves in song
the backdrop blue and red neon lights
outside a one-way street
streaked with taillights.
Time and time she’d
go upstairs where others dance,
but she kept coming back to me.
We held hands; warmth of her touch
flowed into me. She watched and cheered
when it was my turn to sing.
I did the same for her,
a spell shared by friends
as the night glistened a dream.

I look to the sky
a dark friendly sky
music stilled spotlights fade
I look for stars in the sky
friends offer last hugs
under a cover of clear sky
darkness opens its arms
I embrace a welcoming sky
promises of many tomorrows
whisper an endless sky

soft light given to shadows
colored lights dance on a wall
gentle breezes ease the day
whispers of joy
a song to sing at karaoke
people sing and dance
old friends meet again
I stand at the microphone
become The Beatles
for a moment
or Paul McCartney
others become other stars
a street light flickers to life
skies tinted a shade of deep blue
as cars pass and disappear
we become our dreams

There's a place I(used to)go
When I was feeling low.
Weekly(closed due to covid) singing show.
Karaoke Night.
It(was) a lively place,
Smiles on every face.
Young,old,every race.
Karaoke Night.
Guys gals(would) step up to the microphone.
Sing their favorite songs for you and me.
Some were decent. Some would make you groan.
There were different levels of quality.
DO RE MI FA SO LA TI DO
DJ called my name.
I was in the game.
3 minutes of fame.
Karaoke Night.
Singing set me free.
Vocal fantasy.
Superstar was me!
Karaoke Night.
DO TI LA SO FA MI RE DO
I was feeling fine.
Drank some beer and wine.
I had a great time.
Karaoke Night.
Made alot of friends.
Stayed until the end.
I'll go back again(some day hopefully and if they don't go out of business)
KARAOKE NIGHT!!

My neighbor Mike loves karaoke
Who sings off-tune a Hokey Pokey;
Grinds he with delight
But it's twelve of night...
Irked, my alarm whips that voice croaky.

Had a little too much leaded eggnog at Target's Christmas party,
sung karaoke with hardy Bullseye, he was a little smarty.

I should sit and listen to
the people who've been there
and passed back through
living on to tell the tale of life
and death.
But there never seems
the time to take a moment,
and call it mine,
if you find one
can you kindly let me know.
It's a rush,
rush here and there
getting nowhere.
Snowing
white and cold
feels quite soft
I'm becoming old
and it's covering the multitude
I
allude to sins.
Back to Wednesday which
never goes away
always waiting in the wings
it brings it home to me
that this is what
I love the most
continuity.
Bethnal Green and Poplar High
under the East London sky
and I'm here on the Central line
wonder why that's so.
Among the coughs and between
the splutters
the tall guy mutters,
something
catching in his headphones
something
creaking in these tired bones
something about a Wednesday
that I really like.

A singer whose name’s Carrie Oakey
Was hoarse, sounding terribly croaky
Carrie burst into tears
When folks covered their ears
She’s thankful her gig was just low key

Encouraged by the masses
is mediocrity,
like when someone at a bar
sings bad karaoke.
As they belt out notes off key,
we might give guffaws.
Drunken with good will, though,
we offer up applause.
