  Maurice Sendak, "Where the Wild Things Are"

Rest in peace !

 “I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can't stop them. They leave me and I love them more.”  
  Maurice Bernard Sendak (June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012) was an American writer and illustrator of children's literature. He was best known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963.

Many of you, probably, grew up with his stories and original illustrations. I discovered the "Wild Things" when I started to teach Kindergarten in a Catholic school in Southern California.... Boy, did we have a great time "taking a leap" in the fantasy world of Maurice Sendak: dressing up like monsters, acting out the story, cutting out our contoured body shapes out of butcher paper and hanging them up around the classroom :) ...R.I.P.!

the world lost someone who influenced people's life in a wonderful way... thanks for posting this blog, iols...maurice lives on in our hearts... :) huggs!

I heard this today, and how nice for you to do a blog on him. that movie made of his Wild Things book is a really outstanding movie for young adults and older kiddies.

My son loves this book. What a wonderful idea to read it with flashlights. We are doing it tonight. RIP Maurice Sendak.

Maurice Sendak won several Caldecott Prizes for book illustrations too...very talented person...

Remember curling up at night to read this fantastic tale undercover by flashlight and then with my children. As a testament this weekend I'm going to take my granddaughter on the adventure.

You are right, dear Tracie! He lived to be 83...I am sad as my Dad was 2 years younger than Maurice and a writer of children's books...but my Dad passed away in 2002... :(

It sure made me sad to know of his passing, but what a legacy he's left with children :D! Rest in Peace Maurice, where the the wild things are!
