The Serpent's Night
The serpent hissed,
on the first day of school,
looking around to find a group to poison
a group to fool.
It's slitted eyes wandered around
searching and searching.
at last the serpent found,
the fools laughing and smiling.
The serpent went,
its black heart beating with eagerness
the smell of innocence. it was addicting.
The fools invited the serpent with open arms
unknowing of

At Peace
At Peace
A dark cloud of cancer looms on the horizon.
Will it simply pass or rest above me, and shower demise?
Or will the clouds break with the power of thanksgiving love,
And His wonderful face shine on me?
Will I allow a shadowed and troubled soul invite mourners,
Or break in tears by fallen loved ones who no longer

The Art of Unknowing
I would speak to you
Of two worlds,
And diverged roads,
But you’ll tell me,
Why do I see none?
I would paint lines to you,
Tell you how they bend,
What curves they make,
What areas they dissect,
I would tell you all,
Yet those lines,
They will always remain,
Invisible to you.

Unknowing
Be confounded.
Raise a thousand doubts,
trust not words
or the light of the moon –
it has none.
Be troubled,
your safety lies in
utter bewilderment.
A learn-ed parrot
once instructed a Robin Red Breast,
the robin cocked its head
befuddled by the echoic redundancy
of the parrots lecture.
Which bird was wiser?
A donkey carrying a load of books
is still a donkey.
Claim your right to be wonderstruck,
unknowing,

The Unknowing Mentor
I watched intently
My eyes In conflict, to not know
To not have ever witnessed, this which
Now unfolds before my eyes.
I'm beyond the age of a child
That seeks shelter in mother's bosom
I'm beyond that of a young buck who has
Caught the scent & pursues his first love
I'm not to the age that my skin
Resembles

Unknowing Soul
Am I from the darkness of complete nothing
Do I return to darkness from whence I came
Am I alive and free to do anything
Do I live a small illusion in a game
You who have neither beginning or ending
Bestow us a spirit of knowledge to give
Where have we come from and where are we going
And what we

Devotion Poem 7, the Unknowing
Devotion Poem Seven, The Unknowing
(Written for Jim Eslinger, as I face complex surgery)
The difficult coming days shall combine
Into a memory of run hours.
And the hours all combined into minutes
Of final rushed movements: ours and
So many nameless faces with their business
And forgotten words of orders to be followed.
Minutes that shall become so suddenly
Crushed
Into seconds of a

Epitaph For My Father, An Everyman
Epitaph for My Father, an Everyman
(Written with John Hughes in mind,
as he will understand)
One night in particular, I recall, inside a restaurant,
(although I hadn’t noticed any problem) my father
Shouted, yes, more a shout than a question,
“Don’t you know who I am!”
This regional, southern PA tennis champion,;
This small

Into the Cloud of Unknowing
From darkness, deep, deep and black--
we are born into mist and fog,
into the Cloud of Unknowing
where we can see only shapes and shadows
as we struggle... lost, fearful, half-blind,
wanting clarity...seeking God, but stumbling,
always prone to tripping in the dark.

Victims of the Unknowing
True judgment, the seed of disagreement,
Can never exist without true knowing.
Prognosticators spread in allegement,
Sages sternly warn of evil sowing.
Who can say what happens behind closed doors,
Shrouds of unknowing, known only by one.
Everyone else can create all horrors,
Only assuming what was truly done.
Such ignorance leads to adverse actions,
Advancing accused perpetrator's doom.
Separating others into factions,
Sealing the stone

Unknowing
To not know bliss is such a shame,
Forfeit fond ease in drowning cause;
Too late for shame the fleeting face,
Toss out the woes of telling times;
Ignite the loss with tinder box,
Diet and then feed that lightning blaze;
Eat away then the missing link,
Forgo group think as fancy springs;
Waltz by the bay with selfish plots,
Amass a maze of

Unknowing
Now audible, the ticking to that;
Infinite and complete 'Complete absorption'
-Unwillingness to concede overtakes.
What I have known all my life;
The only true denouement of all
stories,The only true destination of all
journeys - Yet I deny
The mind is smart enough to realize,But
the heart provides solace to that,
startled mind; And convinces it of it's
inability to know
