(a story in senryu stanzas)
I get migraines.
- lucky me - glare can set me
off within seconds.
I always have a
pair of dark, polarized shades
with me - it’s a quirk.
When I was fourteen,
we lived in Shenzhen, China
very near Macau.
Macau, China, the
“Las Vegas” of Asia, is
the home of glare.
The Ritz-Carlton, has
a glittering galaxy
of bright chandeliers.
Those chandeliers move,
their silhouettes change shape - just
stab me with a spork.
Did I mention the
Mirrors? Every wall served to
magnify the light.
“You look awful,” my
mom said - our two week booking
became ten minutes.
“I just need sunnies,
those would work,” *then I gasped*
“I’ll look glamorous!”
We changed hotels, but
what a small world - my roommate
Leong grew up there.
We could have passed in
the yè shì as teenagers
and now we're roommates.
.
.
sunnies = sunglasses (UK slang)
yè shì = night market (simplified Chinese)

DANCE
Dressed up or dressed down
Any dance floor to get down
Nifty, nimble moves
Carlton would bring the floor down
Enticing others to groove.
Carlton is a dance move...

The man is from Bronx, but plays in Manhattan
Owns an old Chevy, but he drives like a Mercedes
Sleeps in Quality Inn, but dreams in Ritz-Carlton
Watch him flip his hair and float on thin air
Jazz of the night, he's song of the dawn
And in his every bounce blazes fire of romance
He's the joy of summer in cool rain showers
And exuberance of purple hydrangea flowers
That's how he gambles and wins big in poker
When daunting is life's hour, he does not cower
Nothing is something and something is much more
Despair's just a passing breeze, hope is forever
A dreamer, he meets her, falls madly in love
When for his Aston Martin, she bids a Ferrari
Raising stake, all in he goes, vowing: "I love you"
When, "me too" she says for she's a swagger too

SPRING GARDEN
wildflower blossoms
a coiffured carpet of moss
curlicues of vines
calligraphic bold sonnet
intoxicating fragrance
~
budding green love taps
from a small child’s fingertips
on each oaken branch
lucid tickle of sunlight
robin builds her newborns’ nest

Let me describe what I do and feel
Beneath the glowing red sunset
I walk among the autumn trees
Some of them match the sunset
Some match the morning Sun
And some still match the soft green moss
That my feet now walk upon
How I love being out in nature
There's no better place to be
Especially when mother nature whispers
And her breath kisses you on the cheek
The warmth of it so comforting
The aroma oh so sweet
How I love being out in nature
There's no better place to be

My heart was pounding, my soul adrift, like a large rock rolling towards a cliff. Like a tumbling wall my body shook, crumbling from the hurt it took. Then my angels voice echoed my child don't fret, Your life is great and will get better yet.
I cried in horror lord, please remove my sorrow, I looked up at the sky and started to sigh. When my angels voice echoed my child don't fret, your life is great and will get better yet.
The night was dim, I was scared within. I had a fall and through it all, My angels voice echoed my child don't fret, Your life is great and will get better yet.
This is no ploy, leave all my fears and I will find joy. As my angels voice echoed my child don't fret, Your life is great and will get better yet.

Had an invite to a ball in Lake Tahoe
at the Ritz Carlton what a surprise.
To celebrate in true old fashioned style
opened a door couldn’t believe my eyes
The ballroom was all of a glitter
with walls of silk and panels of wood
Had brought in chandeliers shining like diamonds
the backdrop of Martis Valley looking good.
One whole wall was made of glass
showing a view nearly too much to bare.
I heard the sound of more guests
turned round, I couldn’t help but stare.
Here were ladies dressed in their finery
the gents in tuxedos and white starched shirts.
They gracefully walked to their tables
whilst the band tuned up ready to start.
What a night of pleasure,
we waltzed ‘til our feet were sore
Then we gathered the strength for a foxtrot,
we danced and danced even more.
Fireworks were set off in the gardens
Spiralling high in the night air
The sparkle of these were out dimmed
By the light in the eyes of folks here.
What a way to remember the old days
all dressed up, in a ballroom like this,
The last waltz is played, looked around me
We all had enjoyed Puttin on the Ritz.

There was once a man named Carlton
From the city of Walton.
He was big and bulk,
His Hair colored like a skunk.
There was a lady he could not bear to see,
His emotions towards her, what could they be?
Every time she passed he would freeze,
Pretending to be reaching his knees.
This constant dilemma got to a point,
A security guard she had to appoint.
One day she stopped and greeted him hello,
Little did she know that he would start a show.
The shock in his face, so great was his awe
Before everybody knew he was shuddering like a macaw.
Not knowing what to do He choked on a fart,
Tremendous explosion that reached his heart.
No one will know what went through his head,
Our dear Carlton had never a word said.

He is the love of my life and so much more, since that fateful day from whence we met I knew we were meant to be together forevermore.
He is everything I want, and everything I need. He is there for me in the best of times and the worst of times.
Who is this God among men, above all else who rescued me from a fate worse then death.
He is my lover my savior my soul-mate Damien Carlton.
Now we are joined as one, soaring to the highest height of love and passion imaginable.

Moonlight, Moonlight comes in so slowly
Waltzing gracefully towards me, …… but I am dancing alone.
Night time, Night time darkness has fallen,
Wishing you were here holding me ,….. but I feel so forlorn……
Memories , float all around me, remembering good times, when love was real,
But it’s just wishful thinking, ...... when I try, …. to reach out, …. to feel ,
I sleepwalk ,sleepwalk, looking for you
Just my hopes and dreams, ….. making them feel there true
Your love, your love surrounds me ….., but you’r not here…, here with me
Hold my hand darling……, let me know your near….., very near.
Is it just imagination, that I am feeling you… but cannot see
Your love, surrounding me , now I know your here with me
Stars cover me in starlight
Darkness of night hides the tears, blurring my sight.
But my memories of dancing with you
Makes it feel … so ……alright
Night time, Night time comes in so slowly
My heart says you’re the one for me , please sleepwalk with me tonight
Sleepwalk with me tonight
Walk with me tonight.
With me tonight

Fans were calling the late John Quinn a clown.
For what he did, they wanted to run him out of town.
He traded away right handed pitcher Rick Wise.
Rick was considered the Phillies top prize.
He led the team in wins during the season.
His pitching a no-hitter was another reason.
Quinn sent him to the Cardinals for Steve Carlton.
Well, this was later called Philadelphia’s best trade.
Phillies fans were so glad the trade was made.
Four Cy Young Awards for Carlton came later.
Among left handed pitchers, few were greater.
With over three hundred wins, he made himself a name.
Steve earned enshrinement into the Hall of Fame.

We Aussie like to have a bite
Of bread and butter and vegemite
We’ll save a Crumble bar for you
Cherry Ripe and Lamingtons too
With snags and meat pies all life long
Instant Pavolvas seem all wrong
Toohey’s and Carlton bring real cheer
Four XXXX and Fosters fair dinkum beer
Gran took Vincents with confidence
Bushell’s tea Mums preference
She takes the tea with Sarah Lee
Guess that’s not quite real Aussie
Neither is Arnotts, or Lean Cuisine
Coke, Pepsi , Big mac or Dairy Queen
Eating at the pics with my mates
Minties and Jaffa chocolates
Now the swaggie my mates and me
We really like strong Billy tea
Damper and meat pies still true blue
Aussie products for me and you
For kangaroo meat the prices are high
Fair dinkum tucker you cannot deny.
Though the Yanks grab all they can
Witchery grubs just ain’t in their plan!

Carlton, Carlton, where for art thou?
I know your first name but not your last,
Because I have a nephew with the same,
But I wanted to read more poems by you
But unfortunately I didn't get your last name.
"Faithful" was a feature and I met you there
But I wanted to find more that you share
Please, can you help me for I care
I've looked for you every where.
Perhaps someone will read this too
And know of your work and help me through
But if I fail I had the chance
So I thank you for the dance.
