Brief (I promise!) Contest Update - Hints & Tips

Blog Posted:8/31/2014 6:50:00 AM

I'm receiving quite a few fictional entries: poems written about other people or from the perspective of other people, but I'm really looking for deeply personal poems, which is what confessionalism is all about - writing, in a no-holds-barred way, of your own personal struggles and issues. I'm also receiving a lot of poems that are lacking in imagery, metaphor and simile. Good confessional poetry uses these devices to reinforce what the poet is writing about. I think perhaps I didn't explain it very well on my contest page. You're welcome to take a look at my poem 'The Hunger Game' for an idea of the sort of emotional honesty I'm after.

I think many of the better and more experienced poets like Andrea have moved past the "therapy" stage of writing, although there may be some who still have demons to purge, so the pool of talent may be weighted toward the newer poets, who have not yet mastered the nuances of imagery.

oh boy. This kind of poetry is not usually up my alley so I have not tried it yet. All my emotional personal stuff has already been posted! Sure wish I could think of something. By the way, I adored your Hunger Game poem!!

I didn't know this contest was going on. I don't often check the contest page....I don't often enter. I do...now and again, if I feel I have a ghost of a chance! ;) I'll give it a read...and see what you are after, dear. Thanks for your encouragement today. It sweetened my day quite a bit. Hugs
