I WAS ME

First I was me,

Selfish as can be,

Wanting everything from A to Z

And wanting it all for me.

Then I became we,

A part of an us.

I learned to share, give and take

I learned how to trust.

Next I was you,

Believe me it's true.

I would rather give than receive,

It was you I wanted to please.

Now I am them,

A family man.

Giving my children,

All that I can.

If you look real close,

It is easy to see,

I am older and wiser,

And no longer a me.

If I Could Enter My Own Contest - Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

Blog Posted:3/12/2014 12:27:00 PM
So, as I was posting my contest rules, I just knew I couldn't stop myself from writing a poem on my own theme - and, indeed, I could not.

This is not being offered as an example of what I want you to do - I want an ORIGINAL you poem.  I am just sharing what I would have written if this contest theme was posted by someone else.  This cause has moved me a bit.

A Mile In Her Shoes

by Joe Flach

I tried walking a mile in her shoes today

to see if I could understand the fears

that kept her tethered to an abusive man

for all her adult years.

I tried squeezing my toes in her narrow shoes

and balancing my weight on her high heels

to empathize with the instability

and to learn just how she feels.

I tried taking just a single step

while wearing her cloak of shame

and embrace her silent cries for help

as she still thinks that she’s to blame.

It’s easy to wonder why they stay

when we hear about them on the news,

but we cannot understand this state of mind

until we are walking in their shoes.

I removed the shoes from my blistered feet

after sharing a moment of her pain

with the resolve to fund a shelter for help

where, in safety, she can remain.

And once she is ready to walk proud again,

on her own with her head held high,

we will walk hand in hand in next year’s mile

so other women can pass the abuser by.

NOTE: This poem would be disqualified from my contest, because I included my name on it.  :-)

Really beautiful and touching Joe...I was abused myself for several years in a relationship that I was in.I was so in love with him that I blamed myself for every punch or putdown.Sometimes the mental abuse is worse because it has more lasting affects. But I finally wised up and got away from this jerk.Over the years I have healed and I would never go there again.Hope I can write something worthy for your contest .

Thanks, Deb. I think there is a whole sorority of women (and men, too) who share your plight. It is a topic that we sometimes turn a blind eye and deaf ear to. For people to see individuals like yourself who have been through the fire and come out strong, beautiful and healthy - I think it can help. Thanks for your response and sharing your story. Joe

Joe, I will forever see you as Joe Cool, now. Thank you for this. I was one of those gals... long, long ago. Only two years of that, not a lifetime.. and the thing is once he convinces you the first time, to stay, it was a mistake, you are his reason for living, his passion, he just lost it for a minute, groveling, weeping at your feet.. and you can't believe you hear yourself say, yes, I'll stay. I'll forgive you... then... you feel a sense of shame, of stupidity, it becomes a secret you share, you are now a coward, a poster child for pathetic.. and now he has another weapon. He knows "you" feel more guilty than he did... good poem, Joe. I got away. But he did stalk me, for months after...

Cyndi, unfortunately, there are many others who share this story - and some for much longer than you had to suffer. This is bullying at its worse and something that I find hard to tolerate. I am glad you found the courage to make a change.

No problem, Nette. It's the least I can do for all the good that women have done for me over the years.
