Shiki (1867-1902) a modern master& historian/ critic of the three line Japanese cultural 'haiku' helped re-habiltate the form to modern audiences of his day 'toward ' being just one of his examples. The simplicity of the form is embedded in Zen ,as this example clearly shows and is therefore dependent on who translates it

A poet is more than a penman—
not merely a rash historian of verse.
We shatter the ordinary,
aspiring to the nirvana of heaven,
unwavering in the face of decay.
We explore the remnants of society,
discern the divine from the false,
cast aside the sustenance fed to tired souls
and build soaring meditations from ash.
I am a Tree, living historian of weather
record. Grandfather of colonial bridges
and homes. A giggle, you can hear us
when in the breeze apt to tease, fondly
tickle one another. Poetic: To Tree or not
to Tree? So content to be what we are --
man's utilitarian, your selfless furnisher
of shade and warmth. No matter Strong
Oak or mangy willow. What I answer to
is Proud Fellow, member of the Ever-wood.
If a parliamentarian votes yes,
Does he say A or Aye?
Can we trust that politician.
If instead he says AI?
Is he speaking tongue in cheek?
Is he confused, merging A and Aye
Or using a new form of double speak?
Might he be a historian
Lost in thoughts of Israel’s Ai?
When asked mother may I
Write my essay with AI
Whatever comes of AI
To a data dump say Aye
But an AI tome please deny
May it never meet the Eye!
