I love how deep your eyes are
and the spark they have in them
I love how big and your smile is
and the way it gets me
I love your thick, dark and curly hair
and how they move with you
I love your delicate soft hands
and how warm they are when you hug me
I love how caring you are
and always ask how I am doing
but above all i love the feeling i have
when I am around you
and even the feeling i have
when I think about the fact
that I’am never going to have you
but I’m always going to love you
the surgeon cut me open,
he took a step back, in awe, frozen
the surgeon mumbled with a astonished look
“wow…this is perfect, i mean…absolutely textbook”
the room filled with doctors nodded in agreement
my spirit watching from above felt seen,
as if it was some kind of achievement
that statement resonated with my soul
it stitched every broken part of me whole
it felt like the kind of love i’ve yearned for
as all eyes were on me like fine art hung carefully in a museum,
and i hovered above weightless filled with freedom,
i finally felt fulfilled, despite the source
all while looking at my half alive corpse
Where is she? Who knows her? Who has heard her voice?
She is here, in every moment, in every gaze.
From afar I see her like a gentle reflection,
And in my dreams, she reveals herself in silence.
In silence I converse with her,
About things no one else could ever understand.
She speaks into my ear in soft whispers,
And I feel her heart beating close to mine.
And when the night falls and the world grows still,
She takes her leave in silence, but leaves hope behind.
For I know that tomorrow, in the brightness of the dawn,
She will return to be here again,
In every moment, in every gaze.
I admire you being fareway
Sounds silly simply, to be honest.
Nothing just wishes like old time giveaway.
Just to be free birds to build a nest.
You bare me for being young
Things that tangle, to be naughty.
Anything makes me to be hung
In your mind thinking it lately.
No matter how I carve these lines,
you escape the page.
You slip through my metaphors,
slipping further from my hands.
Still, I write you.
In a higher orbit,
you sway and move.
A soul with too many sides,
with circling winds that carry you from me.
Still, I follow you.
But maybe,
I can peer into the eye of your storm.
I might catch a glimpse of your hurricane heart,
before it turns from me again.
Still, I call you.
You are beyond this world,
a lavender galaxy,
and I, a moon
in your gravity.
I think I loved you.
I think I still love you.
Not in the way I loved her.
It’s indescribable.
Not able to fit in any box.
It’s different.
Heavier.
Deeper.
But it’s real.
Heavier than platonic.
Lighter than romantic.
Yet it still holds weight.
Though I could never name it.
Couldn’t even place it.
I felt it.
I knew your place was different.
I loved you.
I still love you.
I’ll always love you.
It’s a soul kind of love.
Like a keepsake
Reminding me of home.
Like a souvenir to a tribe,
To a place I know will always be home.
Never found a name for it.
Never managed to fit it in a box.
Only knew what it felt like:
Familiar but not quite so.
Love, but on a different caliber.
It’s the admiration in my eyes,
It’s your beauty that ignites that look.
For a moment, I pause
Not as though I’ve seen a ghost,
But caught in the thought
Of how lucky a man I am.
I’m simply someone amazed
Every time I look at her, it feels like the first.
That look, like I’ve been starved of light,
Unaware of it myself,
Yet she always notices.
Maybe it’s not just how I look at her,
But how we look at each other.
There’s fire in our eyes,
Sparks when they meet,
A quiet war between desire and tenderness.
You may wonder what it is that I see,
Beauty beyond measure?
Perhaps.
But more than that,
I see a reflection of love looking back at me,
And in her eyes, I understand
Why the beholder never looks away.
A love so strong
My heart desires what cannot be
But your heart moves me
Is this love meant to be
Desire in silence
An ache so strong
Unsure, both are we
Is our love meant to be
A love meant for me.
Aunt Mary’s sprawling wrap-around porch
hid curious six-year-old me.
Peeking over the baluster rail,
I spied Cross Creek Rosie passing by,
tall and stately, walking purposefully
down Jefferson Avenue.
Her constant companions,
rumors and cruel taunts,
pursued alongside.
In an era lacking preferred pronouns,
she was exotic intrigue,
inquisitive mystery,
a Pandora’s box of queries,
the circus orchestra
rife with colorful discordant notes.
Flamboyant scarlet turban,
deeply rouged cheeks, fiery red lipstick,
black mascara adorning manly features,
gypsy-like blouse spattered in rainbow hues,
black toreador slacks.
My tiny heart ached for her.
Small hand lifted in greeting,
I whispered, “Someday I want to be like you.”
Would I ever walk confidently in my own skin?
Your world is never bleak and drab
no fickle thoughts.
I heard you chastising,
chasing something within/without me.
I stood firm, not flat on my back
held up by your traction of sorts.
You hadn't fumble for a star leader -
I was never plunged to darkness,
never felt picked upon.
For the saucy moon you know, buffers me -
You'd seen me looking up, smiling.
The fluorescence of the moon as disco ball,
You saw me dancing to my own music.
*
Amid the noisy fair of earthly cheer,
Where traders shouted loud like thunder thrown,
Where silks and spices shimmered far and near,
And every breeze told tales the summer’d known—
There moved a maid, more radiant than the day,
Whose quiet grace made even chaos still;
The finest goods seemed dull along her way,
For none could match the charm she bore at will.
The goldsmith’s chains, though shaped with master’s care,
Could never shine as softly as her face;
The merchant’s jewels, rare beyond compare,
Turned pale beside her unassuming grace.
Her eyes—two lanterns sparked by heaven’s fire—
Held such warm wonder time forgot to flow;
And in my chest stirred something like desire,
A tender ache I’d thought I'd ceased to know.
But then the crowd—a restless, shifting sea—
Closed in around her and she slipped from sight;
And though she left no trace for eyes to see,
Her presence lingered, gentle as the night.
For in that passing glance, so brief, so rare,
She lit a spark no shadows can dispel;
And ever since, my heart, though wandering where,
Still guards her glow—the spark she left to dwell.
When you put your hands on me,
I don’t flinch or move away.
I accept all the love you’re giving
I don’t have to rush and take charge.
Baby, I know your scars,
’cause we share the same fears.
I know how harsh the world gets
when they see your nightly complexion.
You’re not an object for my pleasure
or an item that’s meant to be thrown away.
I won’t be the one to forsake you
you’re a person I’m meant to cherish.
I’m not here to dominate, I don’t need submission.
All I need is your delicate touch while
I paint your amber-like skin with my lips
as the sun makes your eyes turn hazel.
I’m caught in your gaze,
and it’s telling me to come closer.
It’s telling me to hold you when you’re low.
It’s telling me to love you right.
When the moon rises through the curtain,
I remember what it means to have you.
As the scent of your cocoa hair drifts through the room,
I remember the love of a Black woman.
In the night' quiet my heart whispers alone,
Through subterfuge, the night' secrets are sown,
Stars track your name where untamed rivers flow
Each sigh is a candle that flickers and shown
The wind carries fables of a love once believed,
Through empty palaces in echoes unknown.
Hope, a brittle bird on the quivering branch,
Sings of dreams that the night has overthrown.
Surely the sea fears that the wind will reply,
Surely your begging, will fall from the sky
Unmoving,I cling in hope to the flame,
Unafraid I whisper your name
Pheko, Beloved Son Of Lizzy
I saw you once,
and the thought of you refused to leave.
The day was fleeting,
yet I wished the same for the night,
just to let the echo of you stay with me a little longer
I wrote you poems,
scattered my heart across notes,
believing I had mastered the assignment.
But no.....
it was your love language
I was only beginning to learn.
This is different.
Unpolished, unborrowed
Its raw from the depths of my heart.
Oh, when I met your eyes,
heard your voice,
felt your touch,
I thought I had tasted life’s sweetest wonders.
Then you smiled
And the world itself seemed to pause.
Damn.
The world confessed,
This girl is out of this world.
Beauty beyond dispute,
grace beyond argument.
Love at first sight?
Perhaps.
But whatever it is,
it feels eternal,
& to me it feels just right.
