As poetry become to complicated  to many forms, rules, count the lines , syllables, make your poet fit into a box its a villanelle its a sonnet are the words more important than the form

Continued from below........ The basic fact of free verse: each poem is shaped from within. You’ll often hear a poet say they didn’t know where the poem would end when they began writing it but that it comes to them as a natural act of writing."

On this subject I always go back to Robert Haas’s interpretation, “Robert Hass in comparing metered poems with Free Verse states:‘……the metrical poem begins with an assumption of human life which takes place in a pattern of orderly recurrence with which the poet must come to terms- Meter organizes accents into an overall pattern and more or less evenly times the lines bringing an organizing influence that allows the story to unfold. The Free verse poem…begins with an assumption of openness or chaos in which an order must be discovered. (cont)

(2) ... and appreciating good poetry. It also keeps us pushing our boundaries and spirits and minds ever outward, and that is always a good thing. I can also see a marked improvement in my writing, just as a direct result of learning new forms and structures, (though my alter-ego still resists, lol). To summarize, I hear ya, Stephen, but in my OWN walk as a poet, learning new forms, despite my resistance, has improved my creative output, and has brought me a new understanding and joy of the process ... it is helping to keep me young and my child's heart active, and for me personally, that is my favorite and most powerful tool. Wonderful blog, and some great discussion! :-)

(1) I've only been writing since 12/16, and when I started I had very little knowledge of the various forms and structures, (in my blissful ignorance listing everything as either Free Verse or Rhyme, lol), and also very little impetus to learn them. After being required to learn them for various contests, I must admit I have truly enjoyed those forays into new territory. Trust me, I very much agree and connect with your blog in spirit, (as I'm an old fart and resist all change defiantly, lol), but in practice I feel myself leaning the other way, as I believe learning and trying new things keeps us young and our imagination sharp, and that is the KEY for me in both writing ... Stephen, when I joined PoetrySoup 13 months ago, I considered all of the various poetry forms to be complicated and restrictive. Listening to the comments of my fellow poets helped me to better appreciate the various forms. I would force myself to enter a contest requiring a certain form. Regardless of whether or not I did well, when the contest was finalized I was able to read the poems that did do well and learn from them. The biggest help is when I sponsor contests and allow "any form" to be entered. I get a nice variety of forms submitted, and that's when the differences really shine for me. I enjoy your poetry, Stephen! By the way, your blog is now a hot topic!

You can CHOOSE to write in form or you can CHOOSE to write free verse. Form can be a lovely thing if well done, and ridiculous if done poorly (just like there can be very bad free verse). Nobody forces you to write villanelles. While I write mostly free verse, I like the puzzle aspect of form. Form well done *enhances* the poem and does not take away from the words.

So true.

Stephen, I love forms actually, I think of them as a puzzle, putting together the required pieces is the challenge but I also understand what you are saying about writing free and for me that is when free verse becomes useful, where I can just write free as a bird ~

Are there too many apples in an apple pie, too many cherries in a cherry pie? Prose, free verse and verse poetry are all forms that give greater, even immense , creativity and freedoms in composition. Yet the long established forms are very important in poetry as they provide the bedrock of which its rich and golden history rests my friend! The history that both inspires and so oft creates the new poets, as well as the already established poets.. Each has a place in poetry as an Art.

I feel the opposite to yourself, Stephen. Form adds to the rhythm and flow of the words, it enhances the tone and adds expression. When I write I choose the form to match the poem. The poem gains beyond the meaning of the words alone. Rather than fitting a poem into a box the range of forms gives varied means of expression from which the poet can choose to suit his/her work.

love your comment, Barry! this is also the way I write. The theme speaks the form to me, and once in a while, to my surprise, it even speaks in free verse!

Most writes benefit from being "Free", but I feel there is a place for writing in form. Let's compare it to music where some messages and or compositions (melodies) benefit from a more restrictive beat and others from more freedom. In music there can be combinations as in a jazz interpretation of an otherwise restricted composition that can be freed even more so with improvisation. Yet there are some lyrics and melodies that are more memorable within a more restrained style. The nice thing, as Tania alludes is that we can do either which truly is the best freedom.

I don't agree, there can never be too many forms. It makes it more fun and challenging here on PS and participation is voluntary.
