Was just perusing some of the works that I have submitted here on PoetrySoup.  I am finding it fascinating to see which poems generate responses.  Oddly it seems that the poems that I thought were much better than others seem to go unnoticed while once I am not completely happy with are met with praise.  Almost seems that the shorter the poem is the more peoplle read it.  Haiku seems to be the most popular of the poems that I have submitted..

I am enjoying reading other folks work and have learned a little about my own by doing so. Keep posting folks!!  looking forward to the next favorite poem...

Most Soupers do prefer shorter writes (I won't get into the why of that) and longer writes are less favoured, no matter how good the poem or the art found in the piece. Try your best to resist writing/posting work to amass comments. There is a danger, there. Write what you must write, is my advice, else you may find yourself Pavlov's dog, trained to keep your verse short, easy to read, lacking most devices, and either sweet, funny, about writing or sexy (cause those are the four themes that bring the most comments.) Try this as an experiment: write a poem about writing poetry, make it romantic and light and use these words: heart, soul, moon, desire, dream. Use "Poets" in the title. ;)

I'm being serious. Try writing a less-than-twenty line poem with all those ingredients? You'll get a page of comments, maybe a Poem-of-the-Day, over 100 reads and a few new followers. Dare you to try it :D

I agree! So true, when you don't have time, those brevity poems are the great reads! But I try to take time out for some of the longer ones. If they catch my attention, I will read. :)

I agree with both of you.. was an observation after brief time on the site. Every one has their personal tasted when reading and or writing. When I peruse others works I tend to shy away from prose or free verse and rarely write that way either. I always felt that with those I was just a little lazy and should continue it to a short story or article... Thanks for your comments and checking out the blog...

I think the length, title, category, time of posting, number of followers, and dumb luck all contribute to number of reads and comments.

Love the "dumb luck"

We recently had a blog discussion about this. Which poems get read depends on a number of factors. If a poet posts multiple poems in one day, people who use the 1-per view will only see one of them. Poems posted in a busy time get buried under more poems on the new poem list. Contest participants usually check out the competitors' entries. People are more likely to click on poems that already have many views. I do not think that short poems get more clicks, because (unless it is short form) you don't know that a poem is short before looking at it - but they may get more comments, because people may browse on soup in situation that are not conducive to a long attention span.
