Mallards sleepily dabble
in a smudge of water.
Then an emerging sun flares 
from its coatless face.
Like dipping ducks,
muddy shadows dive
under mounds of stalky flotsam.
Vista’s crack open
their levees of light....

sometimes its a face in grimace
the next half a ballerina mid pirouette
sometimes a gnarled witches snarled portent of hell
or tree of palm sliced by sickle moon
others an alien gun complete with hum
or a rose half begun...

She mews at my door for milk.
A stranger to me, she appeared
