Shades of Deceit

If you hate me, say it to my face
Don't lie or hide in a secret place
I'd rather hear the truth, no matter the pain
Than be surrounded by deceit and shame
Bullies and liars, they tear me apart
I'd rather cry alone, with a broken heart
Than be with those who use and harass me
And bring only darkness and

sun now goes to bed,
sky shows pretty shades of pink,
a sight to behold.

Loneliness

Looking over my northern shoulder
at the changing shades of day
a weak winter sun turning twilight grey
teardrops of rain on the window
the gentle sigh of the wind
storm clouds in the evening sky
bring it all back again
poring over unwritten letters
in the solitude of night
a dim lit candle shining star white light
telephone silent unanswered
candlelight quietly dimmed

Fifty Shades of Death

When nights are dark you’ll never see
the depths of our humanity,
but in the light of desert days
the shades of death will quite amaze.

So if you’ve time to take the trouble
sift just once through wreck and rubble -
ashen bones of tots will rile,
though eyes of rampant killers smile.

All Of The Shades Of Blue

I always see shiny vehicles in all shades of blue.
It's sad I dunno how to drive, can never get a clue.
But at least I have a drive to not ever be someone untrue.

Shades of blue are flying in the air
and people are gathering from far and near
the symbols of the world 
are hurrying down the street
spreading whispers of hope
 on threadbare knees

riding with the mad waves that is coming after me

shades of you
linger in my heart in
variegated blue

Night Shades

Under a smother of dark clouds
a city skyline sinks,
there will be no starshine
the lights of a million windows
must drain and replace another blanked out evening.

The eyes of stray cats fire up,
it is time now for noise to hunt silence down,
for the garish to consume the subdued.
Shoes, new and old, scuff grime
into renovated store fronts, where

Black, the ink of sorrow, stains the page,
Of slavery's chains, a bitter, endless rage.
Colonial scars, a legacy of pain,
Exploited riches, a cruel, enduring rain.

Shadows drink a wall lamp.
Winter switches the porch light on.
The cat claims its space
beneath curled head and tail.
Earlier,
a kind of daylight
scratched ice into vision,
I rummaged into dark corners -
I forget what for.
Another winter dawn
