time is a river flowing
it lets nothing stand in its way
~ obstinately speeds in one direction

I like to swim, but how'd I get here?

For replacement election maps
Texas jumps when Don’s finger snaps
If he keeps control
Trump’s gold toilet bowl
Is where we'll all swim when he craps

Crocodiles do not swim here

Crocodiles do not swim here,
at least the ones who read.
But as for the illiterate,
they mostly come to feed.

Storm

Gray clouds
gather 
in the hollow 
of my throat.

I chart 
their movement
northwest wind, 
barometric drop, 
the way lightning 
splits 
behind my ribs.

Rain arrives 
without apology. 
I open my hands, 
count the drops.

When sun 
breaks through, 
I don't close 
the windows.
I've learned 
to read 
the sky of myself
each front 
moving in, 
each clearing after.

I asked my shadow to swim on the surface. 
I didn’t want it to sink in fear, 
from the ripples pulling it down, 
fading into gray below.

I asked the silence to hold a chord
until it could resonate. 
I wanted echoes to break through 
the empty spaces where sound had once lived.

The first prolongs it,

Open Swim at Six

See many arms, like shark fins, in pool lanes.
In laps, dusting off dark,
The shiver starts on their mark.
Young stars heading for the lark.

barking dog warning
my swimming hole nature wins
snake heads on the pond

Hurtfully Healing

Steadily swimming
She flashes a grin
Doc in a boat
Take's a note
she won't surrender.  
She wants to win
finds strength within.

Worriedly Waiting, 
friend wishes she'd ask herself "why"
and paces the French side.  
Hastily helping, 
she rises a moment 
to wave, before waves re-hide

Sitting on the hot asphalt blacktop in miles of traffic, feeling lost and alone.
