SOUS LA MER
(The Siren's Song)
If your quiet
And very still
I'll let you lie
And listen
In these sheets
I hear the sea
Waves break clean
Call to me
But I will stay
And fool them
Lie and dream
For one more day
How they weep
With loneliness
Cold and clear
The words they say
Why I must leave
A promise made
But I will stay
And fool them
Lie and dream
For one more day
The Siren's song
Now lay their hands
Fingers long
Scratch like sand
Upon their breasts
Scallop shells
Held by lies
And little else
Coral beads
Wove in their hair
Far off reefs
Sous la mer
But I will stay
And fool them
Lie and dream
For one more day
the king felt thwarted in his own kitchen
he was not fancy, but his concoctions were ’n
the cook said to her sous chef, he is a rogue!
in her unusual jibber jabber, an Irish brogue
the king knew he was entitled, he had been so at birth
He straightened his crown, and bowed to the earth
a loudspeaker on the wall laughed at his pompous ways
he baked a treasure in his scones, in pinks and grays
the cook tried not to laugh, she had to hold on to the sink
The sous chef was yelling “those scones are gray and pink!”
the king’s cheeks were all red, he ran from the place
Serves him right said the cook, making fun of His Grace.
What a marvel, the animals,
Seagull or iguana, no ego,
Lynx or elephant, no ego,
Under the baobab, think the monkey,
What a marvel, the animals,
They inspire all poets,
Who do you take for an owl?
Will you copy the art of the cheetah? ,
What a marvel, the animals,
From the forest, they are the heroes,
elephant or lynx, no ego,
Squirrel or python, no ego,
What a marvel, the animals.
Quelle merveille, les animaux,
Mouette ou iguane, pas d’égo,
Lynx ou éléphant, pas d’égo,
Sous le baobab, pense le singe,
Quelle merveille, les animaux,
Ils inspirent tous les poètes,
Qui prenez vous pour une chouette ?
Copierez vous l’art du guépard ?,
Quelle merveille, les animaux,
De la forêt, ils sont les héros,
éléphant ou lynx, aucun égo,
écureuil ou python, aucun égo,
Quelle merveille, les animaux.
(In the opera "La Bohème", the four friends
need money for a medical emergency, so
each is selling-off something precious.)
Listen to me, old friend
of sixteen years, and counting:
it's you who must ascend
- alone - the sacred mountain,
while I stay on the plain.
You know you have my thanks:
whether we'll meet again,
triumphant in the ranks
of the righteous, I don't know.
You never bent your back
to any rich man, though
we often felt the lack
of life-sustaining sous.
These pockets, gaping, worn,
have borne their fill of booze
when we caroused till dawn.
Poets and thinking men
found shelter from the storm
in here. I don't know when
you failed to keep me warm.
Our hands abrade and age
the very book they cherish:
it's time to turn the page,
for even love must perish.
Farewell, you care-worn sleeves,
buttons, I know by heart.
And see, your master grieves,
for now the teardrops start.
Snoopy, kewpie, Barbie, Ken,
Chicken-licken, Hen-len,
Can’t compete with Adrienne.
Andrew Jackson, William Penn?
“Bolero”, “Arthur”, “Tarzan”, “Ten”?
Not a patch on Adrienne.
My Adrienne’s a honey:
She’s witty, pretty, funny:
looks great in silks and satins
and mixes mean Manhattans.
Tagus, Tiber, Severn, Seine,
zloty, sous, sestertii, yen -
I prefer my Adrienne.
Armstrong, Aldrin, Colonel Glenn?
Zoroaster? Zion? Zen?
Think I’ll stick with Adrienne!
Translated from my poem IF ONLY I HAD KNOWN
I could stay for hours under the sun
to contemplate bouquets of primroses,
to listen to the buzzing of insects,
To contemplate their petals, the shape of hearts,
I could stay for hours if no one comes,
to absorb the happiness of such delicate flowers,
Ah, wasting your time is always winning it,
Wasting your time, it’s an art, it’s a work,
It takes the help of God and wild nature,
To understand the soul of things, symbols,
I could stay for hours in the sun.
Contemplating primrose bouquets.
When you see a white sail in the harbor of Brest,
A sail under a burning sun,
It’s a nagging sail,
She has not the tranquility of a sail on the Nile,
Her mind is not at peace, her conscience torments her,
This sail flees life; it does not enjoy life,
So are most of the things we like
In This country.
What could be better than birds, my friends,
To put our heads straight,
What could be better than listening to this melody ?
The blackbird invites us to flowery diners.
What’s better than birds, darling
To soften our immense pain,
That their song from the distant lime trees,
Song came from pear and chestnut trees.
Let’s listen to the blue tit, the robin,
Let’s listen to the jay under the white clouds,
What could be better than birds, dear poet?
To make our thoughts brilliant in the sky.

Chef Frog was askance
Someone had asked for legs!
He was a chef who usually did what the customer wanted
But this was outrageous, even in Winipegs!
He demanded to know who the culprit was.
Waiter took him to a table where a duck sat, flinging off fuzz.
You ordered legs? Chef frog asked, using a chiding voice.
I ordered eggs, said the duck, whose name was Joyce.
Now the waiter got taken to task for his bad handwriting.
The chef went back to the kitchen where the sous chefs were fighting.
Do magpies communicate with the dead?
It is not uncommon to see magpies in a cemetery
Silent and calm, watch over the graves,
The flowery tombs and the so dogmatic crosses
I often see them in cemeteries thinking,
As if to speak to those who are underground,
They go on a tree, listening to the graves
In a silence that makes all hearts vibrate.
I see them so often with one eye caressing the crosses,
On a green trellis or in an antique pergola,
With the dead, hours they communicate
As to bring them, pious comfort in the afterlife.
On the tides of words,
The eyes too light,
In the running of zebras,
I’m looking for it,
Under the wool, night dreams,
On the precious jewels,
The faces without worries,
I’m still looking for it,
On the torn heart,
By the Mayan treasures,
On the sleeping sun,
I’m looking for it,
In my nervous city,
In the fields of olive trees,
On the softened glass,
I’m looking for it,
In the bed of sources,
On the stopped trains,
On the docile clocks,
In the riddles of heaven,
I find it,
The happiness you’re running from.
Sur les marées de mots,
Les yeux trop légers,
Dans la course des zèbres,
Je le cherche,
Sous la laine, rêves nocturnes,
Sur les bijoux précieux,
Les visages sans soucis,
Je le cherche encore,
Sur le cœur arraché,
Par les trésors mayas,
Sur le soleil qui dort,
Je le cherche,
Dans ma ville nerveuse,
Dans les champs d’oliviers,
Sur le verre adouci,
Je le cherche,
Dans le lit des sources,
Dans les trains arrêtés,
Sur les horloges dociles,
Dans les énigmes du ciel,,
Je le trouve,
Le bonheur que vous fuyez.
