A Poem For Roddy

You were small, but oh so strong,
A fighter’s spirit, a purr, a song.
From shadows deep, you found the light,
And filled our home with pure delight.

Thirteen years of love we knew,
Our days were brighter, thanks to you.
Now softly, gently, you take your rest,
Forever our star, our bravest, the best.

Rest easy my Prince Roddy xx

contented dog
stretches and yawns
no room for me

His pawprints linger

As a young kid back in the hood,
It was just me and a pet friend~
He was the joy of my childhood~
His remembrance would never end.

I called him Pup as a puppy,
Because the poops he made me pack,
Whenever he ate hushpuppy~
Which I enjoyed as a noon snack.

His name later changed to Hot Dog,
When that became his preferred meal.
At mealtime he'd happily jog,
Since dog food was then his raw deal.

He assisted in all my chores,
He followed me to every place~
He used to greet me on all fours,
From home to school, he kept his pace.

While returning home from my school,
On one hot summer afternoon,
He fell and got drowned in a pool,
To his death, I failed to attune.

Years passed, his memory lives on,
No pet has again brought the joy~
Of those beautiful days bygone,
His pawprints linger in my heart.

I am looking out my dining room window, overlooking the birdbath in the small garden of my flat. The arum lilies have added a new bloom—just as the last one is dying off—beside the grave marker of my pet: not just any dog, but my trusty emotional support animal. A black bird takes an early morning bath in the yet icy-cold water, while another waits impatiently for its turn.

My Pet

A pet gargoyle.
Has carved out eyes.
Follows you around.
Haunted.
Jumps around throughout time and space.
Yet doesn’t seem to move at all.
Heavy wings.
Waits for the right time.
If you pat his head?
He growls.
But you think it’s a hallucination.
There’s nothing better than a pet gargoyle.
He sure is haunted.
He usually keeps his evil energy to himself.
Sometimes you can sense him grumbling and muttering.
Evil claws and a weird looking face.
Lifeless unless he’s following you.
A pet gargoyle.
Might decide not to haunt you.
And that’s all you can ask for.

The Pet I Never Had

by Russ Dodson (c) 1968. 2025

I've never had a unicorn
because I couldn't catch one
and I know no virgin maid
whom I could send to fetch one

Premium Member Tanka-Haiku Surprise

On a sunny day,
we went to get a dogie.
Driving the back roads,
Excitement was in the air.
Would our new pet be waiting?

We looked all over,
surprise ~ there sat my angel,
heaven had touched earth.

Premium Member Why Is Child Heartbroken

"The pen must go where the pen wants to go. Today it went down Heartbroken Lane." By Poet

The day came in with a great start
but is going out with a broken part.
With a child's loving and young heart,
it must take a very painful dart.
today I lost my furry best friend,
in life guess some things have to end.
Her soft cream and tan colored fur,
would make me really want to purr.
The day we got her from the pound,
was all smiles and never a frown.
My little heart filled with smiles and love,
I knew she was from heaven above.
A saved rescue pet she would be,
wearing a halo for all to see.
Mommy made car riding so real,
it was always a big fun deal.
Night time we would drift off to sleep,
morning from the bed we would leap.
For a child death is always so cold,
our good times I will forever behold.
Now Angel is gone to heaven to wait,
rainbow bridge crossing has no date.

Shaggy Dog Story

Friends, humans, country bumpkins,
bend me your ears;
'tis too true a tale
I tell thee here...
Once upon a time,
knew a girl who owned a mutt
but she did exclaim,
'It's the cutest pup you ever did see,'
all the same, it seems to be
asinine to give a dog a bad name
but it's not the worst
her canine could receive,
it wasn't cursed
when she called her pooch,
my pet 'Peeve'.

Premium Member The Pet Cemetery Gate

There’s an old, abandoned pet cemetery hidden near the woods
At the end of desolate dirt road far away from neighborhoods
It’s rumored to have a haunted grave, where apparitions appear at night
Among the many old ghostly statues that during the day is a peaceful sight

Eerie cries at night and groaning sounds are rumored to be heard
Many believe it’s spirits of pet’s grief-stricken owners being stirred
On nights with a full moon, gossamer glows on stones under the moonlight
As sounds of barking, crying and meowing can evoke feelings of fright

There’s a beautiful old worn rod iron gate that surrounds the cemetery grounds
It’s kept locked and weeds have grown up over it as it remains closedown
Many see it as a godforsaken haunted and now forgotten lonely place
With painful memories of departed pets that cast an eerie light on the space

At night the gate is guarded with dog spirits of a Doberman and a Greyhound
And many have tried to capture the spirits on camera, but never to be found

Premium Member My Cat, My Pet

My cat is everybody’s darling pet.
from all, she Yearns a gentle pat.
none Can hate her, I shall bet.
At night, she wanders like a bat.
by nature, she is quite cool,
but don’t Take her to be a fool.
My love she Yearns, has a Pair of gleaming Eyes,
they are of The shade of blue skies.
at night, everywhere she wanders.
when at rest, closing her eyes, she ponders.

Foggy Window

Foggy Window

Today I heard you breathing, I closed my eyes, and I could see you there so clearly. Fogging up the window until I rolled it down. You were there, ears flapping in the wind, your smile and that nose, that nose, breathing in all the smells. You were there so happy. So happy to just be. You were happy to be with us, in the car, being just family. Didn’t matter about the destination, it was just simply time together. I can feel your breath on me, I can hear you so loud in my mind, I see your breath fogging up the window, I roll it up and down as if you would show up in person. I roll it up and down, knowing it’s all just memories now. I see the foggy window and I smile. I know once again you are with me, ears flapping in the wind, your smile and that nose, that nose, breathing in all the smells. You sit back down and look at us as if to say, What adventure today? You are ready, and so are we, just a happy family. Just Happy and Family.

ZORRO BOY

My heart is broken today
Because my cat zorro boy
Passed away
He was a bad little something
You see
He was busy like a
Buzzing bee
He watched me as if
He was giving me a sign
Letting me know that it
Was his time
As I whispered to him
Good-bye

Good Company

Man's best friend
in need of a feed
is a friend indeed
so
with a knick-knack here
and a paddywhack there
give your mutt a bone
pat your pet
cuddle your canine
canoodle with your poodle
or smooch your pooch
and he'll hound you
'til the cows come home
wagging his tail behind him
