THE DOCTOR'S PRAYER

They come to us, both young and old,
Plagued by ailments, manifold.
Suffering obvious in their eyes,
Thinking, am I soon to die?

Tortured, plaintive souls outreaching,
Voices that are so beseeching.
A kindly word of reassurance,
Gentle touch, and calming presence,

Are so soothing and bring a smile;
The patient happy for a while!
As we listen to their complaints,
Without hindrance or restraint.

Acumen of many years,
Earned by dint of sweat and tears,
Guides us as we auscultate,
Ever so gently then palpate.

We reach a possible diagnosis,
Order tests to support this.
Surgery or medication as required,
The patient cured, as we desired.

The happiness and gratitude,
A smile of immense magnitude,
Are the greatest gifts that we desire;
Keep alight the inner fire.

May the staff of Aesculapius,
Forever be there to guide us.
May we forever serve humanity
With God's grace and humility.

With Apologies to Mister Poe

Late at night I hear their screeching,
Feel their evil arms outreaching
Like some minister a-preaching
In a temple made of light.
How my poor ears get to ringing,
As a band of angels shrilly singing
On some lonely stretch of highway
In the night.
I think I hear the bells
Of a hundred thousand hells.
They won't allow me sleep,
Nor bless my soul to keep.
Oh, how they make me weep
As their awful midnight screaming
Keeps my fevered brain from dreaming.
I toss this way and that,
Like a trapped and frightened bat
As it scrambles for the door
And croaks out: Nevermore!

Premium MemberGazing Off

I have often gazed
up at the sky, and
off at the sea – sensing
a certain innate airiness
about me; told of relationship
between fishes and me –
the firm of land perhaps
only relative to my thinking...

often restlessly pacing,
soaring,
falling,
drinking
and sinking....

wondering further
if distant stars and galaxies
are not simply there
to assemble and store

not just for direction...but more!

to ponder if the seeming infinite
may have other places for us to
visit and explore

perhaps realizing metaphysical tentacles
far outreaching the common five men
currently enhance for more

maybe dimensions of fantastical
experience, as revealed to humanity
even greater~sensing-repertoire?

Joy Breeds Hope

As my eyes look up to bright sunny skies
And I view soft shape shifting clouds float by
I feel hope instilled through my joyful eyes.
I take a deep breath, let out a long sigh.
Look at the trees how they've weathered the storms
They remain steadfast with beauty so fair
With outreaching limbs share shade in their forms;
Gifts for all creatures who breathe their fresh air.
We have been blest with this beautiful Earth.
Let kindness prevail in me and in you.
Souls need teaching from the on-set of birth
To respect others in all that they do.

Harmony dwells with new hope in God's love
As we connect Earth with heaven above.

Fermata

You are a sustained landscape
one that changes only when you smile or frown,
        a fermata, an endless note
something akin to love strung-out,
pulled thin
until it vibrates at the same tone
as does love, but

not deep,
just the tension of a chord made to sing
as a vibration
upon an unvarying reiterative.

The landscape is in you,
the one holds the other in place.
it forms your stance and mien. From a distance
of years
I see you smile or frown, wave or turn your back
        from my outreaching arms.

The sounding wire is continuous,
only those minor wincing fractals
upon lips,
the corners of your eyes,
the bandwidth of a memory never changing.

The landscape does not build a thing,
not a brick or a leaf just
this constriction in my throat while I echo
the atonality of a mood,

and given the small modulations, your perpetual
disengagement,
and my need for this vision to change
even so, am I kept listening
to this
        ever e x t e n d i n g
minimalistic curtain-call,
a thralldom
to a reenactment that draws near to love
                        while rebounding away.

Premium MemberWhere the Wind Blows

Over where winds blow, my Love waits for me
Even when zephyrs blow a bustling breeze
His outreaching arms beckon come let me see
Join me in my castle where you'll live with ease

Out on the porch listening to rain's soft sounds
There's no wind, leaves and limbs hang limp silent
Over where winds blow, my love knows no bounds
Contained it now seems ~no wind evident

Just a slight breeze will stir blossoming rose
Her scent a delight floating 'pon spring's breeze
Rose's scent entwines with honeysuckle's prose
Racing to where the wind blows, my love to please

Over where winds blow, He waits for just me
With outstretched arms, He calls come commune please

Melody of Love

Lay me
Amongst the melody that is Mozart
Weave his notes in my lank dark hair
Spirit me to a world of horses
Pacing
Triumphant trumpets fill the air

Heartbeats to thunder glorious
Harlequin with masquerade mask
Ostrich feathers to tease the breeze with
Smile on me
Is all I ask

Fill my sky with Michelangelo
Cherubs
Outreaching hands
Offer me spark filled lightening
Whisk me to foreign lands

Let my breath savor scents of lavender
And grass that's freshly mown
Know that all is glorious
Bed of roses
In mind full dreams
You're never alone

Sanguine Sky

Sanguine blush, outreaching its origin,
Roses bloom across the painting.
The sky extends its insubstantial limb,
Spreading its fingers- in gesture towards you.
A great fan, coral but crimson,
Shifting, yet still- tumbling across eternity.
The horizon appears, in a flash of pink rainbow,
Love, of the universe, of humanity,
Of life, appears… and evaporates; a gradual decline,
of colour; but so sudden too,
And we are left once more,
In solitude.

The Tale of Best Friends

heart in heart hand in hand together they stood facing the world
broken homes and despair dreams they at least had one another
year after year they grow from hiding under the sheets from harmful parents
and playing under the bed with cuddly kittens
whispering all their fears and hopes in one other ears
writing notes and hearts with boys name
the outside could not touch them for their love was the proctor
soul mates "is what we are" swinging together on the playground
though the emotional teen years and all the heart brakes and
even petty fights their love kept strong
deaths and marriages come along
hand in hand they comfort one other
holding each other babies laughing saying "forever"
but the hands start to crack and love is fading on one side
the friend tries to hold yet the grip is slipping
left standing outreaching for the "forever" that will never come

2-2-10 the First Kiss

Im on my knees in the back of the truck, just so i can be closer to him in the shotgun
i smile, and let my eyes dance over his skin, speaking flawlessly, but inside im in awe
i go to grab the bottle, he hands it over and lets me take a swig, then i hand it back
he hands the bottle to the outreaching driver [yes we know we arent too smart]
i let my fingers slide their way inbetween his and suddenly im filled with his wamth
his eyes sweep onto mine, and he holds my hand tighter secured with his
"i stole your hand" i whisper and smile, "its okay, i like where is is" he whispers back
i bring our clasped hands to my lips, he takes the bottle back, and i let my lips linger gently
i climb to the front, for a moment im sitting on his lap and he behaves
perhaps if we were somewhere else i wouldnt have moved
he wraps his arms around me, still holding my fingers between his
i rest my head on his shoulder, and then. . . . we share that first kiss

Laika

Into the solar system
Outreaching myself
Intense grief, mourning
Into cake and wedding dress

Galvanized poorly, the rust
About to topple into ochre
Coated stardust glittering
As we discover the truth

Not enough good, oh but for better
For worse, for years, for a fool
Like me and her, a mirror image
A replacement, a damnation

Creeping over stocking tops
There is not enough bleach in the world
To coat the filthy soul you smuggle
Into orbit, my anger now exceeding

The speed of light, the Titanic
To the iceberg, one way trip
A government secret, a conspiracy
Anything at all to wipe away your guilt

And stardust glittering on her face
Leaving retched little Laika to
Smother in the agony of ignorance
Huddle with me for precious warmth

How I could set a man on fire
The tongue is sharp, cutting through
The web of lies, deceit, conterfeit
Forgiveness plagiarized in pamphlets

Set across the universe, the guilt
You should be feeling, burning up in Betelgeuse
Oh for heavens and constellations spell it out
Every dog has their day, but some draw the shortest of the straws

Sonnet

Before these heavy winds, outreaching Fate,
Drive underneath the sod each flowering tree;
Before this heartless hand, whose callous hate
Kills all things living that for loving plea;
Before dire Time, whose iron lungs deride
And desecrate, erode, and crush to dust
The swelling blossoms of the summer's pride,
My stricken tongue finds speech, and speak I must.
Though warm lands chill, and freeze and shrink, to know,
O Winter, know your huge and hurling ways,
In which thy fist, through veil of shifting snow
Winds down the heartbeat of once-happy days,
This mine own rhyming heart, with Song for flame,
Burns breathing Beauty through your ghostly frame!

The Beauty of True Love

True love's beauty is great to behold-
When it is expressed freely and in earnestness,
It can build relationships that no force can penetrate so as to destroy or demean.
Forces may come against Love, and it may be shaken;
But love is a stronghold that binds in oneness of spirit and mind.
Fires may come to burn out Love but love will quench the fire as thought drowned
by water.

Love will survive for it is long suffering;
Love is a sure foundation for it is everlasting.
Love is compassionate for it is not self-pleasing.
Love never fails for it is a shield to protect against all destruction, whether natural
or spiritual.
Love is tender, outreaching, forgiving, and understanding.
It reaches forth to build and to repair even what seems to be the most hopeless
of situations.

True Love expressed will traverse further than any man-made substance ever
could.
Love will come through the storm and the rain of life; walk through thorns and
thistles; braze through the wind an the fire;
Yet, come forth untarnished or bruised as more than a conqueror;
And spring forward to greater aspirations-
For God is Love, and it is forever.

Moon and Night

There was a battle
Between darkness and light
The moon and the night
As hard as it fought
Night was no match
The stars glowered in envy
Eclipsed by her outreaching glow
For the moon reigned over all
As if a lighthouse
Hung in the heavens
Shedding her light
To guide lost souls
