I came this morning
Wine bottle in hand
Looking for you under the tree
By the shelter
You must have known I would come
For you moved your bags.
I think I've fallen in love.
Why would you trust that?
What might you see in me who
Put you on the streets?
"Homeless, welfare mama," we called
You in scorn.
I saw behind those eyes
Woman
And your image sleeps with me
On restless nights.
“Awake,” I tell myself, “you are
Just an unwashed pig dragging your daughter through
The gutters of Philadelphia.
You should get a job."
In my half-sleep, those uneasy eyes
Haunt me into sweats of apprehension.
Today, I finally knew I must meet you;
But you moved your home.
Gondola was prepared to welcome you
You desired the white clouds instead
A void settled on the palm of my hand
The bird too couldn't unfold its wings

if
love
be
this
white cloud
rose
that
open
and
close
i
shall
cleave
thy
heart
for
thee
this
white
cloud rose
Love is a corpse,
a slab on table and a checklist of finds,
6’ 2’’, rich, educated, white, slim,
a post-mortem on a body still fresh
Love is a casino,
a gamble in bright lights,
a bargaining of chips falling where they may,
an under-table sleight of hand
Love is a firework,
a hallucinogenic bonfire blaze
that spirals and swirls with a forever
waiting, a waiting for the bang, the explosion,
the sizzle from cosmos down to earth
Love is a house
with a cupboard for stale secrets
and a creak in an old spine staircase,
flagging passion hung out to dry above
yellow grass in need of water, can rusted
Love is silence is shout is cry is shake
is laugh is let down is let up
is cloud is volcano is dormant is erupt
is triumph is disaster is trust is tryst
surely
there
comes
a
time
when
love
speaks
so soft
and
gently
where
love
is kind
thus
no
more
loneliness
to
unwind
when
love speaks
gently
then
i
shall
find
that
love
is
kind
oh
love
i
shed
thy
heart
where
to
leave
thy
mark
is
thy
sweet
reward
How distant do you feel from our ideal life,
and how hard are you willing to go, to get there?
You’ve got to pull a big swing sometimes, to get there, you know?
You’ll flourish in the aftermath.
What I’m carrying is joy.
Notes for an American student in Paris..
Be less intense
tone it down
pullback.
Enough scrappiness, hustle,
and intensity on repeat.
Sure, honesty is sanity,
but give them a better version
some ‘church girl’ energy, maybe.
Win ‘em with winsome
Don’t welcome them, immediately, into your tense, inner world.

oh
love
i
hear
every
beat
of
your heart
then
let
your
heart
sings out loud
through
every
beat of your heart
oh
love
be
that
lovely rose
wearing
her
burgundy red
scarf
She was too young to hear what she did.
She was too young to see the way you looked at yourself.
She was too young to feel how she did.
Too skinny.
I just need to gain weight to be beautiful.
I just need curves to be beautiful.
Too fat.
I just need to lose this belly and thighs to be beautiful.
I just need to lose this extra weight to be beautiful.
Not skinny enough.
Bones peeking through skin, but not beautiful enough.
Face sunken in, but still not thin enough.
Fingers fit around my wrists but not small enough.
It’s too small.
It’s not small enough.
It’s too big.
It’s not big enough.
Will there ever be a perfect number?
Will you ever love yourself?
Just you, not the number, or tag.
I wasn't expecting the oleander tree this morning
You seized the chance of my being unaware
The flute, however, didn't falter in its whistling
Shedding all clouds, the sky became bare

I am lost in a desert without love
and I'm hoping for a sign from above.
Oh, to be saved by a refreshing sup
of clear water from a cool loving cup,
but my chances look despairing and dire,
and soon Lord, I believe I will expire.
In front of me, I see an oasis,
but do my eyes deceive without basis?
Will its love be my long-lost salvation
or just my naive imagination?

______________
she was touched by a phantom
becoming a phantom too
both boarded coral carriage
wheels grate cobble streets in mist
opera seats were waiting
then to swirl on dancing floor
she relished escaping hours
like
a
Ruby-throated hummingbird
as free as the southern wind
love
is
humming
through
the
heart
again
i
did not wait
for
love
to
break thy heart
thus
i
only asked
for
clarity
from
the
start
yes
with
all of thy heart
more clarity
from
the start
