Blood Moon captivates sky-gazers around the world

I timed my departure to coincide with the
lunar eclipse, but the
eastern horizon wasn't apparent,
in the park, or at the top of the road
my local high points

I scanned the firmament along, with
other rando hopefuls but there was
no show to see so
onwards and upwards we went
as wine of a deep red hue
wasn't going to
buy or drink itself

Beauty comes down effortlessly, fire glows higher.
The flames flicker and dance as they illuminate the dark.
Bright fingers of crimson and gold, reaching skyward,
Now and then embers would escape with a loud spark.

Around the stump, some giant leaves
Are reaching for the sky,
In defiance of the forces
Which allowed that tree to die.

They grow within a little square
Of soil in the park,
A sister stump in its own plot,
Alone and looking stark.

Perhaps those trees were felled because
Of some rare plant disease,
But if some saplings took their place,
It might have helped

Humanity
comes before
the fact
Sentimentality
comes 
after
One steeped
in joy
the other remorse
To shout from
the basement
— or rafters

I shoved the priest into the white van.
The night-vision goggles and rubber gloves
had scared the crap out of him.

When I let him out for a piss
he was still raving:
how was I ever going to get anywhere
with my present attitude?

to haul him around awhile.

One day I took the subway
and I went around the world
From one car to another 
a new nation’s flag unfurled
The train took off from Brooklyn
and I hopped on at Times Square
and by the time that I got home
I’d been most everywhere

The couple that spoke Yiddish,
and hurried on their way
were deep in conversation
which she ended with,

MAGIC ALL AROUND US

Isn’t it ironic…amazing…beautiful…
and it never ceases to astound us…
how the moment we decide our life is magical
we begin to see magic all around us.

A Bad Day All Around

I determined to take seize
of a lightning bolt! Paused
at every tree.  Flashed and
thundered all about – stood
by every metal post, just 
to see if God wanted me. 
Went to the nearest church…
prayed for a voice or sign: 
and from behind the altar
heard a gulping sound, 
pastor draining the sacrament
wine.  Not a good day.
