A life built around your roots
I built a sanctuary around your ever-growing branches,
I watched your leaves grow in the spring
And was eager to see them turn to a warm orange in Autumn.
But you were only around for one season.
I thought your leaves were so pretty
I built a sanctuary around you.
I planted daffodils and hyacinths just for you to see;
A few weeks went by, and the flowers died,
It turns out;
Your roots were stealing their water.
Eventually, you were the only thing alive in my garden,
You’d grown so big your branches made themselves a place in my home,
I had no problem with sharing; in fact,
I was happy to wake up and see your healthy green leaves
Thriving through my broken window.
I loved it until I realised you’d only grown through my house because it was in your way,
Not to be closer to me;
So I moved out,
I watched from afar as your roots and your branches destroyed everything I had built around you.
