As fires rage relentlessly,
I find my sympathies
Veering between the people and the trees.
Some houses appear to be
Too near the boundary
Of trees, and should, I believe, stand more free.
Would such firebreaks guarantee
Any higher degree,
Any great effect on people's safety?
Just as I think sharks should be
Undisturbed in the sea,
I believe bushland belongs to the trees.
The current catastrophe
Is thus, I feel, to be
Not entirely against humanity.
I admit the misery
Of the community,
But folk were living where they chose to be.
On the other hand, no tree
Could imagine how the
Fire would destroy native territory.
