The day that grandpa died

The day that grandpa died
A poem for the contest "Dust"
Written on 3/21/17
By Hannah Corey
Dedicated to my sister, because this is what she did....

She went up in the attic
The day that Grandpa died
And sat atop the biggest shelf
Inside the dark, she cried
And wet the wood
And brought the rust
And soaked thick inches of yearlong dust
Dust. Dust.
Like the fairy dust he used to sprinkle
About her long brown hair
And make her wish a secret wish
She wished that he’d been there
And wished that somehow life could change
And grandpa’s never died
She fingered dust and thought it strange
How dust always survived
