All right, this is not exactly a Halloween piece, dear readers, but the bat is a veritable Halloween icon, and though not one of my personal favorite critters, he has been getting some particularly bad press over the last several months, so I thought I'd just put in a good word...or two...for the little guy.

In the natural world the bat is an anomaly, For it seems to me that neither bird nor beast is he. He can fairly fly, but lays no eggs, Can barely crawl, he has no legs, And yet this little guy's been able To inspire an opera*, films**, a fable***. I love bats. They consume a lot of insects. I will admit, they are a bit creepy. Great poem. Stay well my friend.

Thanks, David, and you're absolutely right. As bad as the insect situation is anyway, I shudder to think what it would be like without little helpers like bats.

People don't like bats because they live in dark places, unless you are batman lol
