They were named for a U.S. President,*
An abbreviation of "Theodore,"
Not called "theobears," it is evident,
They became "teddybears" forevermore.
They were made to look loveable and kind,
Cuddly companions with which to pretend,
Nowhere could small children possibly find
A more sympathetic, loyal friend.
Some have appeared on "The Antiques Roadshow,"
Old bears with famous brand names like "Steiff,"
And toy experts talk about what they know
About the background of the teddy's life.
Many are now seen on Valentine's Day,
Each coloured teddy embossed with a heart,
To symbolise what lovers want to say
To those with whom they wish never to part:
"I am giving you this cute, cuddly bear,
Because I want you to know that I care."
