Stone Angel

The angel stands weeping
Her head in her hands
In perpetual mourning
Her vigil she stands

Ever trapped in the moment
She waits all alone
A figure of heartbreak
Carved from time worn grey stone

No-one left to remember
All those memories lost
But this weeping angel
Waits, whatever the cost

The ivy grows thickly
It inflicts wounds so deep
But it isn't the pain
Which makes this angel weep

Beneath where she's standing
A young woman lies
It is for this poor girl
That the stone angel cries

The writing, eroded
Worn out and unclear
Once told of the life
Of a loved one held dear

Just 'Taken too young'
Are the words that remain
While others surrendered
To wind and the rain

Only one other word
Has passed Time's brutal test
'Lucy' stands out
Clearer than all the rest

Until that word fades
The stone angel will grieve
When it's no longer there
She will quietly leave

The angel of light
Will be freed from her task
No longer needing
Her stone angel mask
