Grundlebean and the Squadgiboo Bear

In the crook of a rock,
in the turn of a stream,
in a fright of a forest,
lived old Grundlebean.
His door had a four,
and his face had a frown,
because NOBODY liked
having Grundle around -
not even the bats
or r-rattling rats
who lived in the forest
in caverns and cracks.

But at door number three
in the shade of a tree
just as CUTE as could be
lived the Squadgiboo Bear.
In that forest of bats
and r-rattling rats,
he was hand-clappy happy
with never a care,
for the Squadgiboo Bear
had just one simple trick:
if you scared him, he’d give you
a HUG and a KISS.

He’d cuddle the bats
and r-rattling rats,
the bitey bug-beetles
and even the gnats,
then his fears would be gone...
and that... was that.

But the ONE last creature
he couldn’t embrace
was that old Grundlebean
with the furious face.
He would stretch out a paw
and the Grundle would ROAR...
and that poor Bear would flee
back to house number three
with a tear in his eye
and a quivering knee.

Now it’s said that one day,
in the crook of a rock,
in the turn of a stream,
there came a knock-knock
upon door number four...
and when Grundlebean answered,
guess what he saw...

A FOOFAMADOOF!

Grundlebean SHRIEKED
and leapt up on his roof,
but the FOOFAMADOOF
raised a knobbly hoof...
SWIP-SWIPE!
and the Grundlebean
cowered in fright,
then he fled up a tree
and stayed there all night,
just him, and the bats
and r-rattling rats...
The Grundlebean whimpered
and shook as he sat.

Next morning, the Squadgiboo
went on his rounds
when he found Grundlebean,
and shouted “come down!”
See, the branch were the Grundlebean crouched
was br-breaking,
but Grundle stayed put
as his legs were sh-shaking..
(for he had seen proof
of the FOOFAMADOOF!)

“Jump!” cried the Squadgiboo,
spreading his arms
as the branch cr-cr-creaked
much to Grundle’s alarm,
so with nothing to lose,
the Grundlebean JUMPED
and landed in Squadgiboo’s arms
with a thump...
“There there,” said the bear,
his hairy arms squeezing,
a feeling the Grundlebean
found rather pleasing...

So that’s how the Grundlebean
got his first hug,
which he shared with the gnats
and the beetley-bugs,
(yes, and even the bats
and r-rattling rats.)
Now his frown is a smile,
and his growl is a hum,
the Squadgiboo Bear
is his VERY best chum...

And next time
a FOOFAMADOOF comes his way,
he will give it a hug...
and invite it to play.

I agree with Tom, Nina. This would make an awesome children's book that would be right up there with anything Dr. Seuss or Bill Peet has written. Couple this poem with an illustrator, and I think you'd have a best seller, seriously. Great job, Nina!!

Thank you very much Carol! I’m working on another writing project for children at the moment, but o light put some time into this or something similar once that’s finished... this needs a good polish I think!

See, everyone agrees, you should put it on short story websites, I've just had this image of you sitting in W.H.Smiths or somewhere signing copies of your book.
