Drunken Nana

Business-like, the wind strips the tree
of autumn excesses,
exposing last year’s nests,
tatty and self-conscious
like fat old mothers,
their wombs spent.

The tree holds them aloft,
proud as a drunken Nana,
and excruciatingly naked.
Ignore the putrefying fripperies at my feet,
it says, dancing distractingly.
I never liked them.

Come January, ice-wearied bark flaps,
and snowfall has severed
a long, gnarled bough.
Do your worst, Woodpecker,
yells the tree, as it twerks
through an arctic storm.

Were you ever a prizefighter, Nina? Was anyone in your family? ---because your poetry sure does pack a punch,...a wallop, to be sure! Cheers, Gershon

Ker-ching! I love that comment. From the same family as “was your Dad a thief - because he stole the sun and put it in your eyes...” However I’d rather get a compliment on my poetry than my eyes so thank you most kindly!

Coool pen, Nina. Heh, I think I captured the spirit of this contest. As one saint said: "Only the coolest of cool get tapped to join". Good luck to you too)

What a great original metaphor, a 'drunken grandma' - Such a defiant tree, standing up to the storm, - a great entry for the contest, Nina!

THANK YOU Rhona! Actually I have Craig to thank for this, with this weird (and he won’t mind me saying that!) prompt. I read it and thought “nah”, but my muse said “we’ll just pop that in a box for later”. Then I was looking at a half-naked tree out of the window and my muse did indeed say “bwahahaha”!
