Contest Description

What to Submit?

Write a NEW poem on some aspect(s) of October in just a few lines (no extra verses)

Choose from one of these five short forns: Haiku (nature), senryu (human nature), tanka (traditional or non-traditional), limerick (humorous). or Quintain (Spanish or English).

The shorter Asian forms should have some sort of juxtaposition at the end. Limericks are best with correct meter and consistency of syllables. If you do not know how to write in any of those forms, there are plenty of examples to view here at Soup. Also I prefer poems that focus on beauty, romance or the humorous rather than on political or religious. I like poems that are lucid and not poetry that is surreal or with meanings that are difficult to grasp.

These are the criteria upon which I judge (for those who don't already know):

1. Good use of grammar and spelling

2. Attention to the form (writing it the way it should be written. For example, no capital letters or punctuaion in haiku). Attention to correct puctuation and capitalization in forms that are not the Asian forms. Correct number of syllables. I do not mind non-traditional (shorter) haiku, senryu and tanka.

3. Imagery and/or cleverness of idea.

4. My own subjective opinion of the poem. Keep in mind the type of poems I mentioned liking above.

I give multiple placements and you can soupmail me if you don't understand the placement I give you.

Good luck!
