A Wee Jog This Morning
Woke up early this morning to go for a wee jog
Got as far as “still laying there” my head in a fog
Yelled wake up my hero
Yelled back “eat minnows”
This conversation with me was a futile monolog...

Haiku 12 - Fish Fry
light wind sweeps water
pushing up glittering waves
delighted fish jump
minnows leap and flash
dark lake water rolls and boils
big bass takes the bait

Late Dawn, and a Fishing Bired Blinked
When the sun had melted straw
to gold
and dawn had shimmered,
out of its platinum dream-mask,
then the lank kneed heron
allowed itself to blink once,
however,
the darting minnows
were too small to care much -
they knew the tall still bird,
had no use for scraps of silver foil.

Carrying Onward
As a boy
I explored shallow river beds.
I carried home in a jar unnamed water-bugs,
minnows, tadpoles and
little frogs that glowed yellow
when the sunlight swam in the creek.
Now the sun comes to my window,
sheds streams of light
to carry me back
to where shallow waters sing
of all unnamable things....

Sequence-Memories
Inkwells in desks with lift-uplids
Tables written out with old pen nibs
Noses pressed flat on the window glass
our pockets tinkling ,full of brass
Exploring fields across the brook
studying in nature's real time book
Fishing for minnows with jar and net
oftimes slipping and getting wet
Winding brooklets filling narrow streams
into rivers of childhood dreams...

Mesmerized Minions Merrily Mention Making Millions
Morey Mouse made merry,
Mollifying Mallory’s Mama,
Maybe mixing mammoth metaphors
Marvelously mystical, Marmaduke mimed
mingling, meshing, ‘mogrifying magical mites,
Measuring muskrats minding miniature minnows
Meddlesome merrymakers, Mr. Mumbsly mentioned, miffed.
Mesmerized minions made millions, merely making mincemeat.
Mediocre maybe, magnificent Mrs. Mumps meticulously mentioned....

The Ocean Breathes

Alice Sleeps Beside a Brook
Alice dipped her fingers into the water, grazing the top.
The brook was mesmerizing. She watched minnows and bugs.
They skittered across the top, too minute to identify.
A slight breeze lulled her into a deep slumber; her breathing slowed.
The world underneath the water came to life in her dreams.
She understood wonderland better now, and she wanted more.
If we could have found the “eat me” key, we would have returned her....

Miracle Man
2/17/2024
The moonlight was shining on the pond’s still surface,
which at that moment only my eyes were seeing.
A rambunctious fish moving within the subsurface,
maybe chasing minnows to sustain its being.
I’m mesmerized, frozen, on a decaying log,
moon illumination has dampened darkness' cloak.
This is my quality time, God, me, and my dog,
entertained by a bullfrog chorus as they croak.
