Premium Member Ethan the Cat

Ethan lies upon my lap
      in sweet and tender slumber.
This happens all throughout the day,
      who can count the number?

I think he's shrewd and his time well used,
      more clever than a fox.
Though doubt creeps in, he looks less keen
      sitting in a box.

Eating spiders and swatting flies
      to his heart's content.
But chasing birds and trapping mice
      are the main event.

When by the door he makes his roar
      yearning to be free.
But moments later the clamor starts
as he's stuck upside a tree.

There might be string or a piece of thread,
      any length of twine.
He goes fuzzball crazy and his eyes get large
      now impossible to confine.

To calm him down I know a trick
      to alter Ethan's mood.
I go to the kitchen, open up the fridge
and show him there's more food.

Then there's Christmas where he finds our stuff,
      a special time of year.
He's shredding presents and chasing lights,
with tinsel hanging from his rear.

I scratch his belly and brush his hair
at times of his own choosing.
With little deference I know for sure
     his fealty I am loosing.

There are times when things go well,
      I find myself with pride.
But people say... cats are Nature's way
     to take the other side.

He lets me know I might lack merit
so he's not afraid to tell.
The thoughts I treasure and my Human worth,
      he's eager to dispel.

There are moments when I adore that cat
when he's giving me a break.
His eyes show love as I melt within
      even when it's fake.

There are four scratching posts and toys aplenty
      that fill up every space.
But no matter what the mortgage says...
      I'm living in his place.

                     The End

Premium Member The Night Santa Brought Us Weed

Twas the night before Christmas and all were in need
as we waited for Santa who had promised us Weed.
Our parents were sleeping with not a clue in their heads
that their children were Stoners and away from their beds.

The cheetos had been placed on the table with care
with an idea dear Santa soon would be there.
The winter was cold with no time for a snack
hoping Kris Kringle would come with fresh Pot from his sack.

I had been to the Bank and had obtained hordes of cash
with a fervent desire St. Nick would bring the best of his Stash.
We had our concerns for a reasonable fellow
who was honest and straight... no harshing our mellow.

The time had been set as I looked at the clock
knowing the waiting was tense and we needed our Pot.
And then from the porch a strange sound did we hear
but it was only friend Jim who had gone for some beer.

I stared out the window and peered through the snow
and we were greatly concerned whether Santa would show.
And then from the street... what did I observe?
A '72 ford Pinto... which was stuck on the curb.

The engine was smoking and the tires were flat
and with the windows quite frosted... I reached for my bat.
This didn't look good as I gave way to doubt.
Wondering who was the driver and who would come out?

And who should come forth? But Santa himself
who was all bearded and fat, a jolly old Elf.
He climbed to our rooftop... was nimble and quick
thus avoiding the doorbell... this fella was slick.

He was now in the chimney and this lightened our hearts
and we knew he was close when we heard the Elf fart.
And then in an instant the Big Guy appeared
but asking double the price for which we had feared.

We told him our troubles as he pondered our point,
he then lowered the price on every third Joint.
The payment was made and the dope was obtained
and up the chimney he rose unconcerned for the flame.

I'll remember that night... for it was a doozy
when Santa came through... and brought me a Doobie.
As he drove out of sight... I heard him calling my name...
Merry Christmas to all and goodnight Mary Jane.

                              The End

Premium Member Who Am I

Who am I?
What do I need from you?
You could start by acknowledging I exist.
You could stop trifling with me.
 You could take me serious.
    I am not background noise.
    I am something to cherish.
For I am the promise of a better today.
I am the urge to move beyond your past.
I am the trust two lovers feel.
I am the belief that anything can be accomplished.
I am the dream you have for a better life.
I am the spirit of great words yet unsaid.
I am the possibility of great deeds yet undone.
I am the vow you take to make other people stronger.
I am the anticipation a young child feels.
I am the chance to do what is meaningful.
So who am I?
    I am all these things
           And more.
I am... what you want to be.
    I am hope.
    I am opportunity.
I am the beginning of each new day.

Premium Member Something's Missing

It's up and down and twice around
With an ample side of snark and leeks.
And an assortment of lies divided by pi,
To find this thing I seek.

I searched my bedside dresser
In the hope to find it there.
But not to be, so I was forced to see
If it was in a box beneath the stairs.
The box was bare and empty
Which did not aid in my relief.
As i was lo' to explain, why it no longer contained
    My most cherished held beliefs.

But I digress and that aside,
I looked beneath a bedroom chair.
And where I thought... my valor ought,
I found just a wisp of empty air.
Undaunted by this troubling news,
I remembered a desk that I had bought.
Where I found a mortal slice of wasted life
But still no sign of what I sought.

So undeterred, I left the room
To explore the very nature of my soul.
Where I was forced to roam with no one home
And found just a bigger hole.
I then paddled through my memory
To bring to bear both time and space.
But the fog of age is a paltry sage
And would not expose its hiding place.

I remember not too long age
When It had been my ardent guide.
I'm not afraid to tell, it had served me well
    With no providence denied.
But with many years of gross neglect,
It had become a shadow of my past.
And something so grand without a plan...
    Is never meant to last.

So my search proved vain and fruitless
But I attempt to soldier on.
And in my despair, I turned to prayer
To question where my love for life had gone.

                      The End

Premium Member Before Helicopter Parents

We walked among the birch trees
    To pass the summer days.
And did our best to trick ourselves
To try and lose our way.
But with success of getting lost
    Our courage turned to fright.
When concern gave way to worry
That we may have to spend the night.

We trampled through the cheerless woods
    With the Sun still overhead.
Unsure of where our cabin lay
    And where this trail led.
The younger kids were quite distraught
And their tears began to flow.
While my Brother and I looked about
For a direction we should go.

The hours faded and the time grew late
As we walked on dappled grass.
But nothing seemed to ease our plight
With twilight's gleaming set to pass.
We came upon a quiet meadow
And sat to ponder the challenge we all faced.
In hopes a hurried rescue
Would bring a Parent's warm embrace.

When at that moment a car drove by
On a road deftly hidden by towered weeds.
And our spirits soared to see the path
Which would quite comfortably suit our needs.
An hour later with the Sun asleep
We arrived home with a hush of anguished pain.
But we were all eager for tomorrow...
When we'll happily lose ourselves again.

                 The End

*True story. As kids we would march into the woods, get lost and see if we could find our way home.

Premium Member My Mother-In-Law

My Mother-In-Law has passed
so she is no longer here.
Mixed feelings I have
    but a little less fear.
She was not my big fan,
    was less tolerant than most.
She called me a bum... I thought
'What a strange wedding day toast?'

I was told more than once
    my Wife could do better.
She wrote Ann Landers nine times
    about me in some letters.
She would scream like a banshee
    with a voice unlike silk.
I was always hoping to see her
displayed on a carton of milk.

She was always at our house
so I had no where to flee.
A cold wind would soon follow
killing the leaves on our trees.
Real Estate values have fallen
    all over our block.
She kept wearing those short shorts
    when out for a walk.

There was a knock on my door
    and who did I find?
But a 'Peeping Tom' crying,
    'Please close all your blinds.'
A sizable women as she smoked...
    had a cough.
When the Lady broke wind...
my car alarm would go off.

We had gone to the beach
and swam late through the night.
She then got a bit hungry
    and bit a Great White.
The next day we went to the Zoo
where she was attacked by three apes.
The battle was wild and fierce...
    only one would escape.

I arrive early for the service,
it's the least I can do.
Considering our checkered history
    and what we've been through.
The people are surprisingly quiet,
    they are silent in prayer.
But my thoughts turn quickly to lunch,
    what will they prepare?

I will definitely miss her somewhat
    as I ponder her fate.
For poor Heaven has gained
    a little more weight.
But if Heaven be not
    but the other direction.
I have no doubt she will have
    the Devil's affection.

We shouldn't speak ill of the dead
as there is no need to flaunt.
They may come back as spirits
    determined to haunt.
The Church service is finished
    as the mourners depart.
The only thing left
is to put a stake in her heart.

              The End

Premium Member Don'T Mess With Dad

A cursed thing whose time has come
and I find myself with hate.
I'm not yet ready and the clock is ticking,
        my daughter has a date.
What lonesome creature, what spawn from Hell,
will show up at my door.
Some slithering beast to take my little girl,
I must be prepared for war.

When the Creature enters, a promise made
to try to keep my cool.
That will be hard with his intentions clear,
he's here to steal my jewel.
The doorbell rings and I let him enter
as I try to hide my frown.
I say, 'Let's talk... you've got the time
        before you hit the town.'

'At this time let me speak
        a cautionary tale.
If truth be told I really don't mind
        going back to jail.'
The brute licks his lips, pats his brow
and his eyes begin to blur.
'My word is true. I do to you
        whatever you do to her.'

I start to stand and take his paw,
        I'm feeling rather surly,
'It wouldn't hurt to curry favor
and be home a little early.'
My daughter joins us and looks at him,
he sees what he is getting.
She grabs his hand and looks at me,
        'I wonder why he's sweating.'

'I can't be sure, we were talking
and you both have my affection.
I thought he might as most guys do.
        to see my gun collection.'
So off they go out the door,
        they're walking down the street.
He glances back, a worried look,
I know that he's been beat.

Premium Member All Hail the Great Peanut

I wish a sack of peanuts would rise as one
To take us back from where we've strayed.
And turkey legs and brooding plants
Would lovingly give the time of day.
And tulips warmed by spring's first kiss
Would have a better sense of play.
And dire feelings of deeds undone
Would not dance their grim ballet.

I wish cats and dogs would go to work
And latter take me for a walk.
Could the wind not blow on mountain tops
And leave alone their weathered rocks?
Could the clouds and rain end their sad refrain
And not pick at nature's lock?
Could the Great Peanut take the time to lead us home
As zealous members of its flock?

I wish a misplaced word would stand its ground
And give sense to our release.
Where a milkshake made from a lover's tears
Would cause the price of nostalgia to increase.
And if only ducks and crows would have their say
To bring back the long deceased.
And the stuff of legends would rue the day...
They took from me their final piece.

But such is not the way of things
As nature's laws fill up this lonely place.
And the rules that govern our world view
    Are rarely questioned or misplaced.
But I am burdened with a child's faith
And sense there is more than time and space.
So I will one day enter Heaven and look upon...
    My Mother's loving face.

Premium Member A Parent's Lament

I have two teens, a boy and girl
put here to cause me pain.
They fight like cats with their only goal
    to drive me quite insane.
I've done my best and raised them well,
can't say they've not been taught.
But they play the victim when they misbehave
    whenever they are caught.

Those crazy teenagers roll their eyes
just to see me getting riled.
I didn't learn, I should have stopped
    at having one more child.
His pants are baggy and her skirt too short
but when I add in my two cents.
When I say my peace, no matter what,
    they're quick to take offense.

They must inform their friends of everything
and it all ends up in a tweet.
And when taking pictures, they're quick to post
    and rarely are discreet.
A bit short on manners and often rude,
    the reason God made wine.
They're bereft of knowledge and lacking wisdom,
    this really saves them time.

They want fashion clothes and fancy cars,
    they're pleading for more phones.
They take my money every week
    saying it's a loan.
They want more stuff, they need more things,
    always ready to consume.
They will never know what they have
    until they clean their rooms.

I give them chores, a little work,
    then I have to reprimand.
Their faces blank as they do not care
    or seek to understand.
If they must have sex, please play it safe
and give your Dad a break.
Don't take this wrong, you drive me nuts,
    don't repeat all my mistakes.

God loves those teens as he made so many,
he must has a sense of play.
To get me back for the things I've done
just to watch me turning gray.
So to my children who think no rules apply,
this is just my point of view.
Remember this when you have your kids...
I hope they're just like you.

Premium Member What Is To Become of Me

What is to become of me?
I feel the warmth of your pulse
As my blood turns cold and I
Slip the bonds of this Earthly life
Where both pride and ridicule
Followed me home like a lost
Puppy. I have never been
Rewarded for the good works
I have performed but then again,
I've never sufficiently suffered for
My many transgressions. Such is
The vain nature of our existence
As perfection and hubris do their
Dance. As I shed my tired corpse...
I give thought to the afterlife.
Will I be greeted by those lost
To the old black and white photos
Of my adolescence? Will I swoon
With a long forgotten High School
Crush as we dangle our toes in
The waters of our youth? Will I
Feel my Mother's touch and gaze
into the eyes I remember with
Every fervor of my soul? Will she
Be pleased with the Man she has
Raised? Will I feel the warmth of
The Son on my face? Or will my
Molecules just waltz with others
Through an uncaring Universe
Intent on mischief and roguery
While riding the wave of some
Minimal existence at the speed
Of light? Or will the flames of a
Vengeful deity consume me for
The purpose of providing some
Vestige of job security for the
Demons of the underworld? Or
Has life been a opened box of
Cracker Jacks with no prize at
The end? I don't think so... but
I have no proprietary information
On the subject. The waiting is
Almost too hard to bear. So off I
Go into the great unknown. I am
Hopeful and pragmatic. But I am
Ready... Let the journey begin.

               The End

Premium Member I'M Simply Better Than You

I reflect a sense of noble bearing
Meant to dazzle and impress.
I'm imbued with love and caring
With no grievances to address.
Now sincerity is my greatest feature
Giving rise to all I have achieved.
But my love for the lesser creatures
May provoke some modest fee.

I am given to quiet contemplation
Making bold of future strife
Where I'm free from surly accusations
From those who put value on their life.
So like the moon that glistens vibrant luster...
My love beams forth and warms the night.
But with all the humility I can muster,
Step aside... you're standing in my light.

I remain a person filled with grace and humor...
Far too humble to admit...
That I love you without question
Respecting your tenacity and grit.
But such a thing carries a certain expiration
And on this we can agree.
You will find me in morbid adulation
Because the thing I love most of all... is me.

Where, O' Where Baby Did You Hide That Key

Where, O' where baby did you hide that key
THAT UNLOCKS THIS RUSTY CHAIN HOLDING ON ME
Is behind shadows in yesterday's floor
OR THERE FAR AWAY ON SOME FOREIGN SHORE
Baby, baby, would it make me love feel
THAT LIFE AND YOUR KISS COULD BE MY NEXT MEAL?

Where, O' where baby did you hide that key
THAT UNLOCKS THIS RUSTY CHAIN HOLDING ME

Where, O' where baby did you hide that key
THAT UNLOCKS THIS RUSTY CHAIN HOLDING ME
Is it down in that hidden farmhouse well
OR JUST BEYOND THE FLAMING GATES OF HELL
Baby, baby, would it make me deny
YOUR BEAUTY WAS THE SOFT BLUE IN THE SKY?

Where, O' where baby did you hide that key
THAT UNLOCKS THIS RUSTY CHAIN HOLDING ME

Angel, Angel, Stir Again Sweet Love Lost

Memory, the ghost of a lost love, a vision
A vixen, a visionary, a heartbeat
When youth bellowed, with vapid imprecisions
And life greedily swallowed all it could eat-

The night, the sky, the moon,
the angel with flaming sword
The song, the love, the tune
Rampaging of malevolent world's angry horde

Angel, angel, stir again sweet love lost,
Send dawn's new glory and tenderest kiss
Pray I this, I care not the heavy cost
For now, she and love I so dearly miss-

In my anguish, sorrows did her heart crush,
All taken away by my heartless greed
I then acted in a maddening rush
To satisfy one of my worldly needs

She that was sweet and truly there for me
Her soul pure and her heart beating so true
I in my blindness poisoned love's tree
In my error now receive what I am due-

This I beg, mercy be given to me
True redemption cast from a hand divine
Perhaps a healing to set us both free
New romance to our stars again align.

      “Great spirits have always encountered
        opposition from medicore minds”
                        Albert Einstein

Your very best poems are about truth, goodness or
beauty!
Yet, ignored, over something... not only ghastly base,
but something mindlessly fruity.

Do not fret if they are ignored, move on and close
the door.
If you are here to be loved and very popular, it
shows in your poetry, which is mostly jocular.

Let others write exactly as they choose.
Get up, read a poet you like, by wearing your
poetic soul shoes.

Why keep reading, only those at the top?
There are thousands rarely read, they are humans
after all, not floor mops!

Ah, those photos on that homepage are so very
deceiving!
Poses of love and great beauty, and then come
their vicious comments~ indeed a very, dark soul
revealing.

Never mind mean cracks at your poems!
These are unloving poets staring at their
contorted faux image.
Under their own cruel mind-domes!

Best we learn from one another.
Than to do all in our power, a good poet’s writ,
to ignore and smother.

Tell me, how great you must feel, when you turn
off your night light.
When some here really do choose to
make of another, a joke and a blight?

Better to support than do all in your power to
smother one another.
Than to prance about here, pretending others are
not your equals or poetry brothers.

Jealousy here? A purely teenage emotion!
It destroys friendships here, and creates a painful
commotion.

I cannot use his name, it would not be right,
But his humor is impressive, classical and a most
appreciated delight.

Premium Member Just Leave Me Davy Crockett

There are people we've selected
    who think they were elected
to flout and mock us with their sordid lies.
In hopes we might surrender
    to these patriotic pretenders
as Congress is where a hero goes to die.
They waste their precious time
    along foolish party lines
avoiding the issues that stokes their hearts with fear.
By showing their immaturity
in not dealing with our security
to trash the principles to which we all adhere.

So just stay out of my pocket
    and leave me Davy Crockett
and the memories of this Country that I love.
You seem intent on causing misery
     by changing all my History
to stain those Heroes looking down from high above.

Now no one born is wholly flawless
and it would be completely thoughtless
to judge a person by their greatest sin.
When it is the core of our Society
     to see such old impropriety
through forgiveness where the healing can begin.
So please look into a mirror
and you'll find it can't be clearer...
nothing good comes from casting hellish stones.
So take from this poor letter
to try and behave a little better
and leave our treasured Heroes all alone.

So just stay out of my pocket
    and leave me Davy Crockett
and the memories of this Country that I love.
You seem intent on causing misery
    by changing all my History
to stain those Heroes looking down from high above.

Now there are those who lack humility
and lay a claim to untold bigotry
and rile against the strides we all have made.
By trying to say we're hopeless
and trying to change our focus
from the lies and plans you all have carefully laid.
You may hope we run and cower
as you try to usurp our power
and turn this Country into something you abhor.
But we will not lose our focus
and I'm here to give you notice
we will defend this beloved Country we adore.

                            The End
