Best Cocker Spaniel Poems
The 28th of April; I'll always remember that day
It was very overcast and the sky was quite grey
That short journey to the vet I will never forget
And when I think back to that day, I have no regret.
He was such a welcome member of our family
A playful cocker spaniel and we named him Ozzie
He loved to go for long walks out in the country
When he saw us with his lead, he'd go off in a frenzy.
I thought he'd take off when he started wagging his tail
The weather didn't faze him, be it ice snow or hail
I would mumble about the weather under my breath
But he was loving every minute although soaking wet.
We'd get back from our walk and I'd rub him down
You could see the joy in his face and never a frown
Then after his dinner he'd lie down for a long snooze
Out of all the dogs in the world every time him I'd choose.
He was eleven years old when he started to fade
I lost count of the many visits to the vets we made
We must have given him every medicine and pill
But we knew in our hearts that Ozzie was quite ill.
0ur family got together to discuss what was for the best
Reluctantly we all agreed that we should put Ozzie to rest
That terrible morning arrived, it was just another day
All he could do was sleep, he was just too ill to play.
My wife came home from work and I carried him to the car
Then drove slowly down to the vets, it wasn't too far
We went inside and sat down and no words were said
And I tried not to think that soon Ozzie would be dead.
It seemed like a life time then a nurse called us in
I carried him to a side room; the vet was waiting
The vet reassured us that he wouldn't feel a thing
We were both biting our lips to stop us from crying.
We'd brought his favourite biscuits and fed him one by one
And just a few minutes later our playful Ozzie was gone
We stayed with him for a while and then left him there
I know now it was for the best because we did care.
We got home it felt empty no one to greet us at the door
And I missed seeing him where he'd often lie on the floor
Its been three long years now but I'll never forget
That Ozzie was one of the family and not just a pet.
(Ozzie left us on the 28th April 2017)

Skating in the Clouds
She ice skates, now in the clouds.
Her figure eights wow, all the heavenly crowds.
She is amazed as the crowd continues to grow.
New, to heaven, God pleases them all with additional,
sparkling white snow.
The new arrival, misses family and friends.
But she will see them here........when they
complete their earthly ends.
She does the axel, with ease, it does her heart, good.
The triple lutz wows all her neighbors in heaven hood!
She notices something small and dark, approaching her
with speed.
Madelyn jumps for joy, it is her long lost cocker spaniel,
Sparky, her pet who fulfilled her young girl needs.
Now, comes her husband, Air Show Jim, as young as the
day they met!
Madelyn is thrilled to be once again with her husband and
her furry pet.
This poem is no epic nor does it intend to be.
Just me, Pangie, hoping to skate one day in heaven with
my cousin Madelyn, most joyfully!
In memory of Madelyn McKay

The Tramp Persona
Who was this boy, a pauper born?
Existing in despair and continual forlorn
Scandalized, accused of communist sympathies
Encompassing both adulation, and social controversies
Charlie Chaplin how can I take you seriously?
Chucklesome slapstick injecting tragedy
Awkward, little mime tugging at the heartstrings
A cathodic empathy he brings
of all those around him, a famous clown
A wiggled walk, a cane, a grin, a frown
The Great Dictator, as plain as black and white
In the struggles against misfortune, the tramp persona typified
A virtuoso kid he found at a hall by chance
A four-year-old child, he saw him dance
A gift he gave to us, a sharing alliance
The Tramp who mastered the power of silence
I was hardly aware of a crisis because we lived in a continual crisis; and, being a boy, I dismissed our troubles with gracious forgetfulness. —Charlie Chaplin, on his childhood
Marylin Monroe “She was a tramp.”
Without her contracts at 20th Century Fox and Columbia (which had both been dropped) who were hungry for denial and headlines. Instead, Marilyn said this:
“I was broke and needed the money.
Why deny it? Tom Kelly’s racy nudes of me
You can get one [a calendar] anyplace.
Besides, I’m not ashamed of it, I’ve done nothing wrong
I was a week behind on the rent and it’s here where I belong
I’d never have done it if I’d known things would happen so fast in Hollywood for me.”
Her candor and honesty charmed everybody
You have this sense of having met a wounded little canary not a peacock. Only when you pick it up in your hand to comfort it … beneath the wounds, vulnerability, and innocence, you find raw strength, and a big heart—I Am Anaya
Lady And The Tramp
A warm and loving story
For dog lovers, in the sense of humor
A carefully nurtured cocker spaniel, Lady
Born in New York City a Baby boomer
Natural beauty overwhelming, a pedigree no vamp
And a rakish, debonair, freedom-loving wanderer
of a dog who wares no man's collar, Tramp

"I saw some road kill on my way over," she said.
She had a horse laugh. "Just a dumb raccoon," she added.
I leapt over the sink and slapped her, hard.
Leaving my entire hand print on her cheek in pink.
Her prissy stuck-up lady face looked stunned.
She stood up, and ran off without any more incessant yapping.
My husband walked out of his man-cave just in time to
see her running flat out past the picture window, clutching her purse.
"Playing with the new neighbor?" He guessed.
I glared at him.
"The woman pushed her way in with a 'yoo hoo', She was not invited."
"She doesn't share your love for animals?" he guessed.
Oscar Opossum pushes open the cupboard doors under the sink, wanders out and chomps noisily from the dog bowl.
Sophie, our most spoiled cocker spaniel growls.
Reggie Raccoon runs over and slaps Sophie.
"Look what you are teaching them!"
My husband says to me, horrified.
"Reggie is a raccoon," I inform him. "She TAUGHT slapping to me!"
I doubt this nosy neighbor will be back,
Which is a perk because I truly and deeply
Like my woodland creatures much more than pushy humans.

It is Magic Wand Day!
Magic Wand Day!
Magic Wand Day!
Magic Wand Day only comes onto the planet Earth once every 175,143 years.
Which means we are lucky we got it in our life time.
The magic wands were delivered in the middle of the night.
There is one for each household, not each person.
Luckily, my husband did not read the twitter feed, so he does not know I have ours.
I grabbed it up a second ago. It is lavender with blue and pink glitters.
There is a little red bow on the front, it is tied in a spectacular way!
Magic Wand Day!
I am bursting with excitement.
You get to wave the wand three times, and your wishes come true.
If you wave it a fourth time, all of your wishes vanish though, so be careful.
I wave my wand in front of my house, to clean it. Poof! Clean!
I wave it in front of Sophie, our cocker spaniel. Boom! Groomed!
I wave it in front of my mouth. All of my teeth are instantly fixed. Hooray! Done!
I carefully boxed up the magic wand and send it back in the return box with the return label.
Magic Wand Day! Magic Wand Day! Magic Wand Day!
It is three hours later before I realize I could have eliminated cancer, created world peace and gotten a chocolate marshmallow milkshake.

Lost in Youth
Rainbows in the clouds, walking on railroad tracks , locomotives up close
Kickball games , I am left footed, spooky reflections in a mirror, running naked
Wooden desks and chairs, kids in the classroom , the little girl across the street
Black and white T.V., Air conditioning , a new blue car, exhaust fumes
The farm, coal fired furnace , warm heating ducts
a collie , a cocker spaniel and a horse named Thunder
Dark starry nights , telescopes , comets and satellites
Northern winters, snow covered fields ,sledding, frozen lakes , and Orion
Camping in fields , mosquitoes bites , quiet dawns and heavy morning dew,
Grandparents ,riding lawn mowers , apple trees , flower and vegetable gardens
Southern Summers , warm muggy nights , ceiling fans ,open screened windows
Screened in porches, ancient toys, , tiny transistor radios, baseball games talking late into the night
Badminton , side lawns , and long rides home
Public pools , icy waters and underwater swims
Trombone , marching band and high school football games
Sleepy classes, friends , lunchroom games, and girls
High school graduation , college and final goodbyes

List
Swinging to and fro from side to side,
I wriggle my back, I'm on the glide,
I'm a cocker spaniel just laying back,
My owner built me my own hammock.
This grinning watch-dog is always moving,
Gentle swaying is so soothing,
Ah, life is nice on a summer's day,
Especially with a breeze to aid your sway.
author's note: i saw this happening when i visited
a work acquaintance. She had several cocker spaniels
and they would lay on their backs swaying to and fro
in a hammock----what a sight it was---and the
dogs were smiling

It is easy to forget that in the main we die only seven times more slowly than our dogs.
Jim Harrison (1937 - 2016) - The Road Home
First Bobo, a cocker spaniel,
I remember only from pictures.
He ran way before we moved
to Canada when I was four.
Second Kizzie, a cockapoo, Mom got
when the family moved to Texas.
I only saw her on holidays and such
as I stayed in Canada. She lived
long and was with the folks when they
retired to British Columbia and was
into her teens before they put her down.
Third Sadie, 3/4 Newfie - 1/4 Bernese,
a big black dog, with a big appetite
for apples from a special tree and
the socks our daughter, a toddler
cast off around the house.
I still chuckle remembering
the scattered remnants lining
the farm lane that spring.
She was over ten, and in pain
when we put her down.
Her ashes remain in an urn in the garage.
Fourth Rizzo, a fencejump cross of
Gordon Setter and Belgian Shepherd,
my wife and daughter got him from
a friend, while I was off on a canoe trip.
A headstrong dog who would take off after
a scent or car to return when he pleased.
On leash, he'd almost pull you off your feet.
With age, he grew territorial and
after the third biting incident, I took
him to the vet to be put down.
But she gave him to an older lady
with a fenced yard who put thirty
pounds on him and he lived to
fourteen or fifteen.
Fifth Hailey, who was five when
we got her from the shelter.
A Border Collie - Shepherd cross
and definitely our daughter's dog.
She'd bounce foxlike through the fields
and on evening beach walks, loved
to fetch sticks we'd toss into the waves.
She was over fifteen and failing when
we put her down, days before
our daughter's wedding.
No urn this time.
Sixth Xena, a Shepherd-Collie cross
and beyond doubt a princess
but more sweetheart than warrior.
She has the canine equivalent
of ADD and a bark first policy
when something new appears
and will retrieve sticks or balls
until your arm falls off .
At over eight, she's running strong.
Seventh, Sam, a mostly Shepherd mix,
she's our most 'rescue' rescue dog,
smart, loyal and obedient
a wantobe lap dog with a feral streak.
She responds in kind to aggressive
dogs and we muzzle her on walks.
Now five she'll be with us for a
good while to continue the tally.

One night in New Hampshire we let the dog out into the dark night,
And suddenly he took off running with all his might!
A skunk was waiting and the dog didn’t have a prayer,
Now he smelled so foul, it was beyond compare!
The cocker spaniel came flying back inside,
Unfortunately we had left the door opened wide!
He rubbed on the furniture and all over the floor,
While my husband tried to catch him and colorfully swore.
Our new house was now a smelly wreck,
While at midnight we bathed the dog in tomatoes on the deck.
The house and pet reeked for weeks on end…
The skunk had won the battle with man’s best friend.

I remember the cabin by the lake in the wood
and Grandma giving us buckets, telling us we should
walk up the creek to get some water from the stream.
Remembering it now is almost like a dream.
No electricity, no plumbing, no water at hand
but we thought it the prettiest place in the land.
In spring we got water not far from the door.
As summer progressed we had to walk a little more.
By August the spring barely flowed at all
so we'd follow the stream, though we were quite small.
Alone in the woods with a bucket each,
following that creek 'til a pool we'd reach.
Filling the buckets, then back down the hill.
This was our chore, I remember it still.
We'd pick wild flowers and try to catch frogs,
taking too long as we walked along logs.
Every morning two buckets of water we brought.
These were for drinking, lake water was not.
Lake water was boiled and used for cleaning up.
The only one who drank it was the cocker spaniel pup.
The stream was the run-off from melted snow.
Down the mountain it ran, to the lake below.
Fast and furious , the winter through
but gentle and quiet by summer it grew.
The cabins at the lake are updated now
with electricity and plumbing but I remember how
two eight year old girls went for water each day.
Their chore done before they headed off to play.

When I was a mere five years old
An Alsation dog was never controlled
As quick as a flash
It bit me on the ass
It's reaction was never foretold
Since then dogs have scared me quite a lot
A resolution needed to be sought
As I grew to be older
With dogs I became bolder
So a Golden Cocker Spaniel we got

I should be marveled for reaching another birthday
Sadly I do not feel this way
It feels like there's too much responsibility
In this small facility
Too much for me to handle
Feel like a small dog, with big fears
Like a cocker spaniel
Feel younger as I grow older
Like a planet is on each shoulder
That's right, it got worse as I turned nineteen
Suddenly the world wants something from Richard Keen
I don't mean to be mean
It's just an inherited gene
Lord grant me a reprieve
So no longer I grieve
I've given it my all
When will I receive
Another birthday is what I don't need
Feeling unappreciated is a feeling I can't fake
Due to lack of a birthday cake
Getting older is a bee that I can't shake
I'm in the meat of my maturing years, I feel like steak
Sacrifices get made, but at what stake
Trying to keep promises for myself that I shouldn't have to make
Nineteenth birthday, how do I celebrate
With a party, methanol
Or alcohol
Not at all
I sit back and reminisce
My first job
My first kiss
My high school years
My first and last tears
I'm a man facing my fears
As they get near
We get older with each birthday
But it doesn't take the kid in me away
Mature faster, I wish I could
I would
But like everybody else, I'm in my 2nd childhood
I shudder to see what happens when I turn twenty
My worries will grow from a lot to plenty
But it's all good, because I embrace responsibility
To the best of my ability
Tackle obstacles
Fast agility
I'm the only man in this vicinity
Every year I reach, is matched with growing ambition
Lord grant me longevity, more life extension
50 years from today, hopefully I'm retired with a healthy pension
Relieve me of tension
Not yet focused on children
Because I'm looking for millions
Another birthday, I've reached one year older
My hormones are hot, heart turns colder
Figure out a safer way
To see another birthday

Suspicion always finds the poor butler.
This time, he was carrying a large box.
I think I saw her fingers--if not her
perhaps it was her sister's golden locks.
People say that she slapped his lovely face.
Not one to pass stories loosely, mind you,
but a grain of truth may favor this case:
She loved him, but I hear, he wasn't true.
I've only heard these things, and, yet it's true:
his was an evil look I saw that night.
Passing judgment, I'm not accustomed to,
(he could have done it when far out of sight.)
At last this story is wrapped in a glove.
The Butler's name, by the way, is Daniel.
The box contained a gift for Daniel's love:
A golden, freckled-nose cocker spaniel!
