Premium Member Grandma's Hand Sewn Quilt

When the auctioneer first shows it,
I feel a sudden piercing shock.
My grandma's hand-sewn antique quilt
Is on the auction block.
It is the lovely basket pattern
And her stitches are so neat,
It must have taken tedious hours
For my grandma to complete.

I have taken such good care of it
Since my daddy left it to me,
And I wrapped up in it often
When the day was dark and gloomy.
Grandma sewed in her initials
And the year that she had made it.
One hundred-fifty-two years of wear and age
Couldn't help but start to fade it.

Grandma didn't know the fortune
That her hand-stitched quilt could bring,
When it was held up as an antique
In a future auction ring.
My heart is truly hurting
And I cannot stop the tears,
For giving up the treasure
I have loved for all these years.

Grandma made it for her hope chest,
While my grandpa was at war.
The year was Eighteen Sixty three.
My grandma was twenty-four.
But I know Grandma would agree with me,
That the life of our little Nell
Is worth more than a beloved quilt.
It is the right time to sell.
There is so much history going with it,
To this quilt's lucky buyer.
I hope he bids a hundred thousand.
Or if we're lucky, even higher.

Premium Member Ant Sense

When I was a young child I studied ants
I loved their formation on ground and plants.
Like tiny soldiers lined, disciplined well,
They worked hard all day, from what I could tell.

Their strength was awesome, things they could carry,
Never wasting time, all day they'd tarry.
One time as I watched two lines in a row
In opposite directions they did go.

Then as I watched them, like a friend of mine,
Two friends stopped to chat then returned in line.
Ant's personalities, unique to see....
How akin these small creatures are to me.

I love their work ethic in an ant farm....
A splended tool to teach kids not to harm.
They work together harmoniously
And will protect their nest defensively.

Please teach your children the value they give.
Not to destroy their nests, please let them live.
They work to keep other insects at bay
And help till the soil in their special way.

I know households do disdainfully reject,
Yet these small insects gain my full respect.
They have survived millions of years on earth.
There-in lies their beauty, proving their worth!

Note: Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera.

Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the Cretaceous period, about 140 million years ago, and diversified after the rise of flowering plants.

It has come to light according to a new study, that ants  produce their own antibiotics to deal with diseases that can be used to treat humans as well.

Ants do a lot for us and the environment in general. A single
large colonel of ants will pick up and or kill 100,000 other insects a day for food. So they're the pest control themselves of the insect kingdom. Many species of ants have a mutual relationship with plants that the ants may benefit from in some way. Over 12,000 species of ants have been scientifically identified. Ants are known to be a good source of protein and ingested in several countries.

Scarred and Blackened

In Tasmania’s rugged but scenic South West
Lies an ancient land of pristine wilderness
Protected by a World Heritage Listing
An eco-system a thousand years nesting

A land of Aboriginal spiritual dreamtime
Where rare native flora survives, like Pencil Pine
And fauna abound on the Button Grass plains
With rugged mountain ranges never tamed

Hunter Gatherers burned to reduce the fuel load
The protectors now heading down the wrong road
By letting the fuel build to immense dimensions
A massive fire just waiting to turn the land ashen

The spirit of storm clouds gathers up high
For the rangers this is pleasing to the eye
But alas, this building spiral of cloud is dry
Just building thunder heads in the sky

The inner circle of the clouds one big mass
Intermingle, then with violence they clash
Spewing bolts of lightning to the ground
But not a drop of precious rain to be found

A searing bolt of lightning grounds
Amid the drought-stricken pencil pines
An explosion of sparks, then flames
A fire is born the lightening to blame

Spreading quickly with the brisk westerly winds
The fire races through the dry Button grass plains
A massive cloud of smoke drifts east
Alerting the protectors to this massive beast

The call goes out for fire fighters and water bombers
As the black smoke causes concern to near-by loggers
For the fire now a catastrophic inferno
Consuming the wilderness like no tomorrow

The water bombers and man-power useless
Against this cataclysm of wild fire that has unleashed
Thousands of acres of pristine wilderness
Now blackened and scared, a nothingness

For weeks it burned, some 100,000 acres
Now tamed by remote area fire-fighters
But the scars from the fire yet to discover
A landscape that will take years to recover

Global warming, to blame many think
As this South-West area was always wet
Many years of below average rainfall
Perhaps Mother-Nature having her revenge

100,000 and Counting

American healthcare is a joke
Government play on too many folk
Those who can't pay
Die everyday
Whilst Trump switches from Lysol to Coke

A Hundred Thousand Dreams

Each night
you dream
in fours or fives
or more--
hundreds of dreams a month,
thousands of dreams a year...
yet you think you've dreamt
only a few, and can scarcely
remember those--
where then are
those unknown dreams?

Are they hiding?
Hiding in a special place
within your unconscious,
that vast part of mind
lying iceberg-like
'neath the waves
of the knowing world?
Are those dreams
that came alive only
in the dark side of
your mind still there,
waiting patiently
to be known, known
by your sleeping soul
when it awakens
in the real world?

I have lived long enough
to have made over 100,000
of these little home movies--
will I ever get to see them again?

Premium Member Mrs. O'Leary and Her Cow

On Sunday the Eighth of October 1871 shortly after nine o'clock at night,
The Great Chicago Fire began causing panicked folks to flee in fright!
'Twas alleged that Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked a lantern to start the conflagration.
She and her hapless cow were "udderly" condemned by an outraged nation!

There was prejudice against the Irish and the O'Leary's were to blame,
For owning a cow, owning a barn and the lantern that ignited the flame!
But they were hardworking immigrants who'd saved $500 to buy the place,
To make a home for their family and the American dream embrace.

When the fire began a warning rang out from the courthouse bell,
But at 2:05 AM the massive bell crashed down as it tolled its final knell!
Since the entire town was constructed of wood, folks were asking for trouble,
And as a result old Chicago town was left in a smoldering heap o' rubble!

From the beginning of the fire everything that could go wrong went wrong!
Horses pulling fire engines ran helter-skelter scared by clanging bell and gong!
The fire left 100,000 citizens homeless and about 300 people perished,
Along with their cats and dogs and most everything else they cherished!

Well, it transpired that Mrs. O'Leary and her cow received a bum rap!
That dear little lady was in her bed when the fire began enjoying a nap!
Strangely, her barn and two cottages were spared in the Great Chicago Fire!
They were finally demolished in 1956 should anyone happen to inquire!

A Rap From My Son

if you wanna find me, look up i won’t be hiding,
in the sky’s where i'll be hundred thousand miles and climbing
i'll be gettin lifted like the clouds vapor rising
flying through the time zones while i'm riding bolts of lightning

i’m gone...
and i hope i never come back again
all this world can offer is disaster when will it ever end here’s a testament
to the best of them who were heaven-sent
who's friends and family outlasted them no laughter then it’s paper thin
it’s shattered glass...
it’s a look into the hollow depths of your tattered past
when you heard the blast we were cast in the heart of the aftermath
just trash in the path of disaster now we must face our master’s wrath
brain matter sprayed now police dispatchers have
to pick up the phone...
who are you why are you so cool when my friend’s dead all alone
with his head blown off 45 round hollow tip lead to the dome
in the blink of an eye time passed us by
when friends and family died where was i gettin high flyin through time zones

if you wanna find me, look up i won’t be hiding,
in the sky’s where i be 100,000 miles and climbing
i be gettin lifted like the clouds vapor rising
riding bolts of lightning in my nikes time zone flying

Note: The political idea of One Nation in British politics was coined by Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881) and used by countless politicians since, to refer the duty owed by the 'better off' to help those less well endowed and fortunate. That irrespective of     class, Britian should not be two nations of rich and the poor, but rather one, united society.

Scabs

Scabs in Australian history
The Labor Party came from the early Shearers strike, 1900s,
where Unions fought for and got fair wages for the workers.
Later in the 1950s the Shearers had trouble with SCABS.
The Australian National Country Party brought in the Scabs to undercut the
wages of the hard working Shearers of Sheep .
Kiwis shearers were brought in at lower wages and fights developed,
between the Scabs and the Aussie workers...
The Farmers wanted cheap labour...
So worker swinging voter, you are being replaced in the Mines jobs,
By guess what? Cheap imported maybe 4 dollar an hour workers
on special Visas...Not funny to be kept out of work!
Howard the duck was ejected from his seat because of
bringing in 100,000 cheap contract workers,
ARE THEY STILL TAKING AUSSIE JOBS TODAY..?
DO YOU GET THE PICTURE?
You vote for Abbots nasty people and you will be out of work,
or would you like to work cheap ..Bo Peep SHEEP???

Dinner For Two

OK another adventure in the mad poet’s life,
This occurred just before I met Jane, my imaginary wife.
Jane’s brother, Glen had set me up with a blind date
He said the girl was a stunner, I could not wait

So dressed in me stripe trouser with me chequer tank top vest
I oiled me baldhead and let the old spice do the rest
Off I went down town to meet Deglet Noor (that was her name)
Glen said, “If you see her lips you’ll want to kiss them more and more.”

Then I saw her, and dam what a blind date
She was lumpy like custard with an all eye seeing Rottweiler that made me fearfully
hesitate.
She looked like a bulldog chewing on a bee
And the Rotter was eyeing me leg as if it wanted to hump me
I thought to myself, give the girl a meal
Then we call it a day and that was the deal

She chose this uptown place where rich people dined
A French restaurant with snails and frogs legs, you know the funny kind
I had a steak, she had prawns and a lobster too
And she persuaded me by force to drink champagne form her trainer shoe
When she ate poor lobster it was a terrible gore
I wish she could have taken a tip from Sir Robert Hinshaw

When we finished the waiter brought the bill and waited for me to pay
£1500 bloody pounds, my bowels almost gave way
I said to him “We not finished yet. Could we have Ice cream and coffee?”

And I said “Oh and don’t forget the mint toffee”
Me credit card was on strike and would not handle that amount
It was time for me to exit time to get out
So when the waiter had gone I told her I was going to the loo
Said to her I needed to off load a number two

In a terrible panic I managed to squeeze through the window, hitting the deck
I punched the air shouting “Yes!” followed by an “Oh F-ck” and “What the Heck”
I had fallen into the kitchen and not outside you see
The head chef said “We built it this way to stop people like you stealing from me”

Five weeks on and 100000 dishes later,
If I stayed any longer I’m sure I would have been promoted to head waiter
Nevertheless, If you do come across Glen give me a shout
Tell him the mad poet is looking to blow his brains out

**For my sweet Delysia Hendricks who asked me to write this poem**

**Deglet Noor is a date that you eat if you didn't know**

Little Trucker

Little Trucker

Little trucker in your little truck,
rolling down the road with a little luck.

Chicken fried steak, napkin on the floor.
Pulling your pants up as you exit the door.

Pull out of the truck stop, another load picked up.
Heading to Little Rock with a 100,000 Styrofoam cups

Lights at night, blur with the lines.
300 more miles according to the sign.

Glow of the panel keeps company with you.
Song of the wheels can make you feel blue.

Alone on the road, it looks the same.
telephone lines, occasional train

Pulling over, as required by law.
A few Z's caught, that’s about all.

Another load, another town,
another drink, another round.

Twenty years of roads come and gone.
One day, you tell yourself, you'll move on.

But you never did, you never will.
Worst thing for you little trucker,
is just standing still.
