Ant Sense

When I was a young child I studied ants I loved their formation on ground and plants. Like tiny soldiers lined, disciplined well, They worked hard all day, from what I could tell. Their strength was awesome, things they could carry, Never wasting time, all day they'd tarry. One time as I watched two lines in a row In opposite directions they did go. Then as I watched them, like a friend of mine, Two friends stopped to chat then returned in line. Ant's personalities, unique to see.... How akin these small creatures are to me. I love their work ethic in an ant farm.... A splended tool to teach kids not to harm. They work together harmoniously And will protect their nest defensively. Please teach your children the value they give. Not to destroy their nests, please let them live. They work to keep other insects at bay And help till the soil in their special way. I know households do disdainfully reject, Yet these small insects gain my full respect. They have survived millions of years on earth. There-in lies their beauty, proving their worth! 11-2-18 Insects Poetry Contest~First Place~ in a winning list of seven Sponsored by: Angela Tune Note: Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the Cretaceous period, about 140 million years ago, and diversified after the rise of flowering plants. It has come to light according to a new study, that ants  produce their own antibiotics to deal with diseases that can be used to treat humans as well. Ants do a lot for us and the environment in general. A single large colonel of ants will pick up and or kill 100,000 other insects a day for food. So they're the pest control themselves of the insect kingdom. Many species of ants have a mutual relationship with plants that the ants may benefit from in some way. Over 12,000 species of ants have been scientifically identified. Ants are known to be a good source of protein and ingested in several countries.

Wonderful thoughts about a critter reviled in most cultures. I am a bit more enlightened now...and shall hence beware my brutal inclinations against these little guys--thanks!

In Germany, I stepped on an ant and it was immediately surrounded by other ants that did a little dance around it, then plucked out its antenna, picked it up, and toddled off. Fire, and Army ants do not appear to be as civilised, but you have reminded us they still have a role to play! Aloha! Rico

An adorable poem about one of Nature's most amazing creatures. With allergies in our house, we don't use pesticides; instead I lay old peppermint or chamomile tea bags or the dried herb around the edges of the house and garage to keep out ants and other crawlies. Nature has given us the power and tools to live in harmony with other beings. It's a shame that many people want to poison them. Everything has its purpose. Well penned; had to fav.

A Lot of research here Connie and a really enjoyable, informative write. We do tend to get rid of ants and small insects in our home, but i'll think of your poem next time one appears. Well done, xoxo Jennifer.

A remarkably informative and erudite submission, Connie - beautifully written with fascinating detail. I wrote on a similar subject, but with a different, lighter slant in my poem: ‘The Ant’.

wow, that was really great stuff to learn at the end but also the poem itself was a teaching moment! I was bad, Connie. I killed them when i was a little girl. My friend's father was from India. When he saw me stepping on them, he bawled me out!! what a wonderful tribute this is to them.

Love the flow of this one, with an important message. I've always been fascinated by insects - ants especially - and read a great book called "Empire of the Ants" by Bernard Webber, which you may enjoy. Regards, John.

The world would survive without people, not so insects. This is lovely rhyme and flow dedicated the those very dedicated ants, really, they are dedicated to their community and I agree with each word; however, in Texas they bite, horrible bites, so in Texas I did fight them (fire ants.) A joy to read, my Connie. Love ... CayCay

Hi Connie, This is a wonderful poem on the subject of ants. One Afternoon I went into the Vestibule and ants covered the back of the front door. Funny thing, there were six or seven, bigger, with wings. I was called into the kitchen, when I returned they were leaving. They are such industrious little insects. I loved the content of this little gem. A fave. Have a wonderful Thursday. Hugs....Mike. XX
