THALIA'S BARK

My dog’s name is Thalia—
she barks when her tummy’s empty,
barks if she wants my attention,
and barks when a stranger wanders too near,
as if she owns the whole block.

One afternoon in the kitchen,
she just wouldn’t stop.
I figured—alright, food again—
so I scooped her a bowl.
But nope. Still barking her head off.

Curious, I went out to see what

It took years to decode the meaning of a dog’s bark,

Sex as the Controller**

They heard us outside the bedroom window—  
Breathing, moaning, panting, grunting, and screaming  
In the stillness of the night, calling out the names of the Gods.  
Salty sweat dripped from our bodies  
Under the Caribbean heat waves, many moons ago—  
What a summer to remember!  

Yet

Dog Bark Warning

My dog is outside warning strangers off our property
the neighbors, delivery men, me if I walk up the driveway
stay away or you will be sorry, says his ferocious bark
it is deep, hoarse and fierce sounding
He treats us all as if we have machetes and stabbing knives

until we get closer….
if we get close enough, he leaps

The sharp snap of branches masked the bark of distant dogs

A stolen life. A split-second decision.
Disorganised thoughts, jumbled—
Tangled around an anaesthetised cortex.
Clocks mockingly ticking,
Ticking down inevitability,
As a lone fly buzzes relentlessly around my head.

Swatting at it—it returns mere moments later,
Pestering, always just out of reach,
Festering like a wound reopening, oozing with persistence.
As the slant of the harvest moon traverses its way through splinters in the

White Foam On The Bark Of The Tree

The wind moves soft through silver air,
A hush upon the waking sea,
And morning spills its golden light,
On white foam on the bark of the tree.

The waves have whispered through the night,
Their hands have shaped the fleeting spray,
Now pale as ghosts in trembling light,
They gleam and softly fade away.

A moment caught, a breath held fast,
Yet time

the yipping dog bark

I hear a barking dog in the distance tonight
Not a desperate bark or a warning bark
One of those weird I-am-bored-with-life-barks
Neither of my own dogs respond
They also have no use for small constant yipping dogs

Ancient Tree

Like a smoker's cough
the dark bark of your rough skin
Married many times

A barking dog never bites

yeah, right, just try telling that to the neighbors
German Shepherd!!

LIONS DON'T BARK

Lions don't barks
They roar
Always active and focus
Ready to take action at any time
They set eyes on a prey or an attacker.

Lions don't relent
They go furiously and fearlessly 
After what they want or need
No matter the recklessness.

In the game of life 
Be the lion
Pursue your dreams relentlessly 
Go after all you want or need 
Slowly and

Beyond the Bark

A familiar path I walked frequently with glee
the feeling of a constant stare came over me
upon looking to find the place of the stare
nobody was in sight, no one was even there

Next day I decided to look a bit closer
maybe I'm dealing with a trickster
wondering who could it be watching 
what I found out was

Cell

When I was in my personal cell,                                                

Doreen, are you okay

Spike whimpered and barked
Door open, gate open too
Spike paced on the porch

LOST IN LOVE

Anytime she passes through trees another making it gardens.
First meeting hurt her to imagine.

She knows it's not right but she keeps him right.
Loving him with all her might.

Only for or him to hurt and break her back.
Watching her always bark.

Showing her another he got.
She thought what had she got not.

Poet POTD

I'm a flower tickler
with a flower tickler's thumb
like my dog before me
although he's more of a philanthropist
than a poet, but, like him, I too bark
my greenery of colours when needed
and tickle flowers 

Bark

You don't miss me
and the forest is dark
you don't miss me
and the night has no stars
you don't miss me
and I can hear the bark
you don't miss me
and that broke my heart.
