Premium Member The Saddest Thing

An artichoke without a heart
is the saddest thing,
except, of course,
a hobby horse
without a spring.

Luckily, It Stopped Before Q

Arbitrary patterns, be it said,
Behove a poet who has nought to say:
Consider if you will, the holy dread
Descending on him when he has to play

Egregious games of lexicon and sense:
Ferocious is his hunt for weighty meaning:
Garrulousness has no innate value - hence
Hermetic references, frantic gleaning,

Intemperate allusions all too often
Juxtaposed with useful phrases in a
Kulturkampf, with memes supposed to soften
Lacunae like the way we treated Jinna,

Matriculee of Lincoln’s Inn. No joke.
Nehru, Inner Temple. Things you learn!
Our planet is a stellar artichoke,
papaveraceous, as the Medes discern.

Premium Member Sandys Small Heart

sandy has a smaller heart than an artichoke
emotionally a quintessential slowpoke
stomping on others feelings with army boots
ripping out hearts straight from their roots
leaving broken and battered in her wake
as dangerous as any typhoon or earthquake

Premium Member Indicative VEGETABLES-

Constipated onions
Immaculate cantaloupe
 Collard, mustard, turnip greens
 crabgrass eating artichoke distant
Are the carrots potatoes fried display?
But the watermelon
Praise on the tomato mustard says
We be going to have ketchup today

Premium Member Wasted

In the air, blows my hair
In my eyes, a blank stare
                                          I’m just wasted
Too much wine, it’s divine
               The most flavorful vine
                                         That I’ve tasted

Have to go, even though
            I can’t drive, that I know
                                                 Call a taxi

Stomach churns, how it burns
                 Artichoke dip returns
                                           Mouth is waxy

I’m not well, they can tell
                     Like a turkey from hell
                                     That’s been basted

Over there, people stare
They just laugh, they don’t care
                                         That I’m wasted

Premium Member My Mother's Kitchen

My mother’s kitchen really wasn’t so much.

It was the kids’ kitchen, the daughters’ kitchen, where red food coloring met peanut butter and dried milk and ice cream

in super-special surprises

and the big girls ate at one table and the little girls another

and the daughter who had to wash dishes after dinner got rewarded by choosing what everyone else watched on TV that night.

There were lots of green beans and broccoli, an occasional asparagus and a rare artichoke,

and the only dead thing was the flowers that Daddy never gave Mama

the time he forgot their anniversary.

When Grandma showed up that night, she found the kitchen just as foreign

as Mama did.

Premium Member Really Quite Corny

Peter Pumpkin recently got squashed
That was really quite corny, oh my gosh
Got veggies on the brain
From corn I'll refrain
D'ya hear bout the artichoke that developed a cough

Premium Member Prayer To Wonder

To encounter you in Cleveland
as if an angel drew my steps
into the intricate re-enactment of
an Amazonian forest
A glass tank with a caption that reads,
"Long- necked South American Turtle"

After intense staring into irridescent shallows
your shape emerges as a living abstract;
 a turtle-seemingly carved from an
ancient tree bough,
your long neck, the gnarled branch:
your body an elongated burl

Nearby, a sloth, in an emotion
like sleep, does a slow motion spiral
down a vine clad tree
A creature (my memory refuses to name)
like a crazed artichoke
returns in endless typewriter movements
Eyes glazed, despairing of escape

I am drawn, mesmerized back to the
tank with its oneness of stone and log,
breathing a silent prayer to wonder.

It’s okay
To close your eyes
To fall asleep
To breath in deep

If inferno heat
Shall sway the wind
Or kill the flame
May it boldly show itself

A frog upon a log
Or a lily pad
An embroidered cushioning
A round , flat leaf

For the water lily
Lilac
Ivory
Lavender blooms
Water daises
Cupped hands
Receiving fruit
A mandala
All- encompassing
Far - reaching
And symmetrical

An artichoke

Floating in the lake or pond
Or rooted in the wet dirt
Recollection of thoughts
Steps taken before
A walk along the road

Figs stuffed with proscuitto and mascarpone cheese,
a plate of bacon wrapped scallops and pineapple.
French onion soup is bound to please
or garlic steamed mussels with which to grapple.
Artichoke hearts smothered in sherried cream;
pears with sugar and cinnamon in butter sauteed;
pork tenderloin medallions make a demi-glaced dream
while crisped lyonnaised potatoes are made.
Now with a sip of Pouilly-Fuisse'
tastes flush the palate like a gourmet concert.
A toast to good friends on this wonderful day
as ice wine chills to serve with dessert.
A plate of old fashioned Bananas Foster-
perhaps in the morning, eggs benedict with lobster!

Premium Member Would You Like An Artichoke

There was once a real funny bloke
That could tell a silly joke
                One day rumbled
               Then he stumbled
Because of a large green artichoke
