My name is Timothy Hicks, and I've been writing for 5 years now, since I was 13. My main hobbies include writing, playing my piano, origami and bicycling.

I'm a bit OCD about some things and some would refer to me as a nervous pacer. I like to do outdoor activities, but at the same enjoy my alone time where I can sit and write. I'm a very avid reader and enjoy several different genres: horror, science-fiction, fantasy, and mysteries such as Sherlock Holmes.

I've had several different jobs including shakerboarder, pizza-make and cotton candy maker-and-distributor.

I like to think of myself as someone that can fit into almost any crowd and I always try to stay on the bright side of things. I swear very little and hardly ever get mad at people. I believe spreading smiles is a much better practice than sharing negativity...

Let's All Come Together - A Call To Understanding

Hello fellow Soupers!

For those that follow my poetry will notice that I have been absent these last few months. The reason for this is not just a lack of inspiration, but an extreme interest in politics. I've never really been interested in past elections, until this one - which has almost every other country probably thinking that America has become one giant clown show.

I have my own political opinions, which have changed and fluctuated, through out the election. But let me just say one thing (and I'm not trying to "convert" anyone over to my side, so bear with me). What breaks my heart the most is to see friends and family get torn over a presidential election. I've seen people unfriend each other, over simple disagreements in political opinion. I've had disagreements of opinion either be blocked or ignored. I've seen people accuse half the nation as being bigotted, because of who they voted for, as if he/she knows ALL the motivations and intentions inside a person's heart. Friends that have known each other for years, either too scared to express their views in fear of being attacked, or too close-minded to have discussions with others that might not share their opinion, because of how polarized this election has made them feel.

But folks. What changes after the election? And by "what changes" I mean, how is your best friend or neighbor, who you've known for years, all the sudden the enemy? If you are feeling anxiety towards each other, ask yourself, what brought about these feelings? Are they based on hearsay or on hard evidence?

We are a divided nation, that all too often flock to echo chambers, only to hear our own thoughts and opinions reflected back at us. And the fact of the matter is, whatever the President does, whether it's good or bad, if you are predisposed to despise him, you will interpret it in the negative. The same thing goes if you are predisposed to like him, you will interpret it in the positive.

So what caused this division? What drove the wedge? What caused each and one of us to grab at each other's throats? Your enemy is not your neighbor, or your family. We all need to come together and unite as a nation, against the real enemy. A large part of which, is the mainstream media that has been lying to us for decades, whether through inherent bias, or outright deception. Every single news corporation bet on the wrong horse, with polls that were false, which tells you they are out of touch with the American people. Either the mainstream media will have to make drastic changes or independant media will rise up and take over (which it is already doing).

We all need to take a step back and listen to one another. Don't jump to conclusions about a person, then refuse to do the research on opinions that are different towards your own.

Pause. Examine. Reflect.

If Trump does something you don't like, then express your views on it. Have a dialogue with someone. If you are an American citizen he IS your President. We've had 57 elections, 5 of which where the popular vote was different than the electoral college. That's how our system works, and there is good reasoning behind it.

I could have written this post to defend my political views, but site guidelines prohibit me from doing so. My intention here is simply a call to be more understanding of one another, and be open to dialogue, rather than to flee from it when it makes you uncomfortable.

Each and everyone of us, no matter who is president, will continue to live our lives, to the best of our ability, as we've always done. It's been said a million times before, by a million different people, but it's no less true today than it was yesterday ... change starts with You.

You are all wonderful poets and great friends.  And I hate to see relationships between each other be tainted simply because of an election.

We will survive this, so long as we hold onto our humanity, and trust in one another long enough to have an open and honest discussion.

-Sincerely me

Glad to see you here, Tim: I say change is a good thing. I have found in statistics that people will always be split 50 / 50 and so enjoy discourse with those who are in agreement because it is rare that those who disagree will come over to your way of thinking even when it makes more sense. I have friends whose political views are opposite to mine but we enjoy other interests and see the good points besides those we disagree on. Hugs, SuZ

Well Tim, religion and politics are always great topics. Heh, I kid. Despite the polarization in the U.S., for most people I don't think it matters all that much who is President. How different, really, would it be for us had Dukakis beaten Bush Sr., had Dole beaten Bill Clinton, or Romney beaten Obama? Trump gives more possibility of real change - whether one would say it's for better or worse - than any recent President, but I see that as still quite small compared to what can happen. These decades are going by with the unrelenting buildup of gov't debt, and while it's not yet at necessarily catastrophic levels, there is only one way it ends, very ugly. You ain't seen nothin' yet.

Hi Tim, I know you put this blog up with the best of intentions but it's too early, emotions are still running high over the result and only time will tell. If you're going to do politics here then be prepared to receive the odd bashing, but don't take it to heart. Take care, Richard

No one should have to take a "bashing" for a blog that calls for understanding. There is a time for bashing, we don't have to bash every chance we get.

A lot to think about. I'm hoping he is just a big talker. He said he'd put Clinton in jail, and now he's flipped and said he won't pursue that. So that gives me hope that most of his stupid remarks are just idle threats coming from a huge ego. I hope. But I'm sure there will be some things happen that people won't like, we have to pick our battles. Look what is happening in N Dakota. I don't understand why that isn't getting more attention. This isn't a threat, this is happening now, it's been happening, and Obama did nothing, and not many people are talking about it or outraged, more concerned about gay marriages, we pick our battles, I wish all the Trump protesters would take that anger and energy up to N Dakota and do something to help.

At first, I thought, it won't do any good for me to go, we need a large group. But if individuals go.... that will turn into a large group. We need to get the word out about it. Mainstream media is pretty quiet about this.. I don't know why.

And no, sadly, I don't think Trump will do anything. Not sure that Clinton would have either, though. She was quiet about it for a long time, and finally made a statement that didn't really say much, you know, like politicians do.

haha "Hell froze over" :) We agree on more than you realize, Cyndi. We just approach things differently, I think. So, yes it's about the land that belongs to the Sioux, the pipeline is close to sacred burial ground, but mainly it is about the risk to their only supply of drinking water. They are being terribly mistreated.. thank you for reading up on this, and I'd love to see you do an informative blog about it!

HOLY CRAP! So, this is about both land and water. the holy god of oil, corporations and the right to peaceful protest being blown to bits? About right? Obama is doing nothing. Would Trump do anything different? A quote of his, "There is no so sing as too much greed." I don't know. Nobody does....

Trying to readup on this as quickly as I can. A pipeline? Is this about land that rightly belongs to the Sioux peoples? Do I have that (at least) right? People are being hosed down for defending their own land??? I'll read more! You are right. This deserves focus!

If what is going on in ND is anything like what is going on Northern Ontario, it does demand our full attention and information could be shared so those not-in-the know can lend support? Possible? Is it about water, Becca?

Look! Hell froze over! We agree about something. I am ashamed of the Canadian government's broken election promise to help our First Nations' peoples who have no clean drinking water and live in horrific conditions. Would posting a blog about North Dakota be seen as political ?

www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/voter-turnout-2016-elections/ This one gives some significant numbers that speak volumes. The first chance that Trump was given: denounce the KKK. So far, that chance has been squandered. The second chance: choose staff who will unify the USA. EPIC FAIL. The third chance: show some maturity and restraint with social media like Twitter. So far, no luck. The fourth chance: act like a president proud to serve your country. He wants to share his residence between the whitehouse and trump towers... uh? Pandering? Chance after chance blown to smithereens.

Tim, thank you for your blog and believing that we are able to be honest with each other and we took you at your word: If Trump does something you don't like, then express your views on it. Have a dialogue with someone. " Some of us did that today. Some are willing to stand up for those who we feel have been unjustifiably targeted by campaign promises and the key staff that have been chosen for the Whitehouse. The key division is that it wasn't a person who was voted into power, but mandates. Germans (GERMANS!) are warning Americans to not take this lightly, to push, to resist, to speak out ... because just pretending nothing is happening is the most destructive action anyone can do!!!

Well Tim, you tried. The polarization is a result of peeps knowing deep down, this country is terminal. Does not matter who is in the White House (though some have to pretend it does). The economy cannot be fixed for two main reasons: 1) Our empire is too large and it cannot be sustained; 2) Our economy ‘matured’ decades ago. Maybe the Chinese will do to us what we did to the Soviets, bankrupt and checkmate.

As I was saying, TIM, your blog was a good attempt at peace. Our country is being torn apart, families and friends are being torn apart, and hurt, and I don't think it is necessarily because of whom we did or did not vote for. I think it is because we are seeing true colors emerging.. how people behave toward those they disagree with... things they say to each other... people are seeing true character begin to show, and it isn't what they expected. Anyway, thanks for writing the blog.. it's good that young people such as yourself are willing to speak up.

Tim, this started as a nice blog ... you made some good points, I only wish people would listen. You said you didn't write this to defend your political views since the site prohibits it... and that this is a "call to be more understanding of one another" ... sadly, some people do not know how to do that. They prefer to try to push their own views on others. and people who disagree with them, will remain silent, as usual. Where is Craig lol This could have been a lot more fun with his input :)

There was a point in time in American history that somebody said, "This is your king. You may not like it, but its a fact. He 'IS' your king." The funny thing is, nobody thought of him as their king. He only wanted their money. Their views of what their country was didn't so much align with his stance. So, they started this thing called a revolution and it all started with a boycott, with a #notmyking. Nothing is written in stone. History has proven, thrones can be overturned. So, I hope everyone will be understanding of demonstrations, protests, more 'Hamilton' style call-outs and QUESTIONS. The questions won't stop.

It's simple, if you voted for Trump you can accept a bigoted, misogynist, narcissistic, foul mouthed patriarch as President of the USA & that person outside of their poetic side is most likely to be a gun carrying, patriarch themselves and no friend of mine - poetry aside. Let's be real, why wouldn't he feel comfortable in at a table with Putin or Kim Jong-un?

Depends on how do we define "politics." To me, to many, politics revolves around things like taxes, spending, infrastructure. It's easier, then, to say ( in Canada) OH GREAT! It's a liberal term, so we will run into serious debt or OH GREAT! It's a conservative term, so debt will be reduced but our taxes will increase. It is easy to discount who chose what party, when this is the focus of the division. BUT when it is about rights that are threatened to be overturned, it is about more than just politics, correct? It is about valuing equality... and it is understandable if some can not accept what some are willing to sacrifice. Friendship can be like marriage: irreconcilable differences.

I'm not familiar with the stop-and-frisk scenario but if you're referring to Islam, it's not a skin color, but a religion. Some are peaceful, some believe in violence against gays and women. Some have no intention of harm, others have views incompatible with western society. It's a complicated world that we live in, unfortunately :(

What evidence is there of a white supremacist being in office?

The rights of LGBT aren't being threatened though. Trump has been very pro-gay through out this election, and through out his life. He's the first Republican candidate to wave a rainbow flag on stage. So that part doesn't make sense to me.

If the rights and lefts are going to heal, then the first thing to do is admit that their is cause to be concerned and that rights are being attacked. If even that can't be done, as KKK morons happily parade for their win, then nothing will change. If the fact that a white supremacist is in the white house cannot be mentioned, why trust?

Also, The LGBTQ community has the right to marry, monogamy, the same as straight people. They have a right to live in union... and that right is being threatened.

The right to life doesn't stop once we've left a womb. Children around the world deserve the ability to grow up. Canada believes in accepting refugees from around the world, regardless of religion. The whole stop and frisk thing...umm?... didn't that break rights, assumed to be potentially dangerous based on skin colour?

If rights are being threatened, then it's understandable, but I'm not sure which rights are in jeaporady except for maybe abortion (which I personally believe to be inhumane in any case).
