Expecting butterflies but hearing crickets -edited with a new idea..

Blog Posted:7/20/2015 3:24:00 PM

There are times when a poet pours their heart, soul, sweat, and blood into a poem, posts it for all the world to see, and then like leaves in a fall wind, it gets piled over by a gust of a million others.

Do you feel a sting of disappointment when you expect butterflies in your comment box and only hear crickets chirping in a silent room? I have felt that, and I'm sure I am not the only one, maybe you are new to the social networking of poetrysoup or you just happen to have posted more than one poem that day and lost in the shuffle few to none are the comments that follow.

Tell me about it. Link or send the title to the poem that you just want to get noticed, one that deserved credit, deserved applause and that makes you proud. And  as comments to this blog come, see that there are others out there who need support too, so if you get a chance then visit them and leave word or two.

Every one who posts on this blog will get a visit from me, it is important to support each other.

Show me what you got peeps, let's get the pride of your pen showing! :)

Side Note... I have been reading the comments ...thank you all... I guess I not really trying to complain about the lack of comments on a write, so much as sometimes poems get slipped through the cracks... I wonder now if there is a way, or should there be a way that a poet can select a certain poem or poems to highlight on their reading list, like pinning a tweet on twitter, you can see poems that other poets like of yours, could we make a way to do that for ourself?? Like a top five of our own writes to be featured at the top of our list, maybe marked with the same "Hot" button that blogs are marked with when they get many views....what do you think about that??

That's a great idea, Casarah, since as one's portfolio builds up nobody has time to go through them all and ends up landing on some that were not as good as others ( I will readily admit to writing some which I look back on and would gladly delete, but then I wouldn't be learning anything), thereby prejudging the writer unfairly. I quite like the idea of a green traffic light or a firework for poems that one is particularly proud of, not because of number of comments, but because of your pride in it. You can always explain why in the poets notes section of it. And I agree with Ian- the maximum per day is a little high, and time is at a premium for the reader. That's my two 'pennorth. Viv x

Sometimes I go back much later and rewrite pieces. I usually like the premise of the piece and with a fresh perspective the piece improves.

You are one of my favorites, I can relate to how you feel, there is an ebb and flow here. Sometimes it is a lonely place, but it does provide an abundance of inspiration. Sometimes I feel bad that time is short and I can't read and comment on talented work like jour own and others who I am fond of. This is a great way to bring attention to how people are feeling. Hugs Rick.

I wrote and deleted a comment to this blog umpteen times, Cas. People tend to misconstrue, so. I'll just say...I know how you feel. Been there. However, I'll keep writing because I cannot do otherwise! It's my sense of identity, and I have to be true to myself regardless of what others think of me and my work. I leave now and again when it gets too much. When I've had healing time, I get back in the game. I do believe those who enter contests get more views. I don't do many contests for various reasons. My work is mostly bits and pieces of my life, embellished or served raw. Not everyone is interested in that. I have my regulars who bring me joy. I try to visit when visited.

I like what you are saying here, Eileen. Keep doing what you do. We are all different. I am just someone that has to do contests just to have inspiration. I have already pretty much written out my whole life in poetry! I hope to keep seeing your poems here for a long time

I have those whom I visit regularly. I tend to like poets who aren't afraid to admit that their work stems from real life experiences to some degree. Even when contest you choose to join is a reflection of your character or something that has touched your life. I love that honesty. You are such a writer. You write with heart and soul, and you're brilliant. Thanks for visiting me now and again. Hugs

Nette. I believe that the newbies do not understand how it works here. When Soup put in that reply function at our poetry pages, it ruined things for commenting back at others' poems. you are so good at the "old way" and I wish everyone were doing like you.

Hi Casarah: I have found it takes time here just getting to know other poets, reading their work, commenting and getting comments in return. I realized a long time ago it is impossible to know everyone and if I stumble across a gem I am enriched in that moment. I spent enough time yesterday reading others' work that my picture came up on the home page and still my inbox was empty. I was thanked in some cases by a reply but few come back to read in return. No one has enough time. That's fine. I have learned to accept it.

HI Cas, I'm back again. Sorry if I did not address the subject of your blog directly. One thing is that, my poems may have suffered from lack of notice initially, though I was not particularly bothered by it. I was too busy reading and soaking all those lovely poems, learning the new forms. If ever there is one poem I'd like you to read, it is my latest, but then, it would not fall under your topic...as it's still new. hugs

The best way to get read... is to read others poems and leave comments. You'll then find others like you who enjoy the same type of poetry... And a group of admirers is found. Enter contests. If you get any placement at all, or honorable mention... Be Glad. You'll be noticed. Write Blogs like this you'll be noticed. And if nobody places you in the contest... Start your own contests. I put 11 contests for beginners and others to show their stuff last year... and one for Story poems this year... You go girl... And remember... You're not alone... I've noticed you. I'll leave a few messages in the future... So you know I've been there.

Sweet Cassie, one of the few people here in Soup when am beginning to find myself here inspired me to go for more... schedules and priorities have changed over the past months that I limited my time here: writing, posting, commenting... 1st, I open my Soup I clicked on Inbox and see who are there despite me being absent... I feel guilty that at times I can't even take time to reply or comment as much as I want too... =') I quit commenting line by line as like before however, those that holds me really instantly with their poem, this I comment and say as much as I want too.. =') I appreciate and forever be grateful to those who dared to correct me and share some ideas....

Thanks, Olive. There are so many more, but these people I mentioned not only encouraged, they were also ones of those few who offered not only friendship, also minor corrections on the poem page itself or sent soupmails when they notice something. Gary Bateman was also one of those first. Now, there are more, people who have become close friends here who I consult when in doubt.

There is a theory that states that "If you throw enough s... against the wall some of it will stick". I would like to think(well, actually I do think) that all of my poetry is good, really good, or great. That's where you, the poets of the soup come in. I need other poets to help me refine, to hone, to develop my writing ability. Kinda like Ian, I hesitate, at times, to comment on some writing as being "PC" (poetically correct) complicates the process. I have benefitted form the contests, comments, and suggestions of many on soup. I do agree that it is hard to follow the daily entries on the all too fast conveyor belt.

Just read Kim's comment and she's got it right! I go through spells when I don't comment much and get few in return and sometimes I comment on many and of course, get many in return. Please don't get me wrong, I understand how it goes; show appreciation for other people's work and they will appreciate yours and that's a good thing. I dislike phony or one or two word comments such as: 'Nice!', 'Enjoyed', 'Good write' etc...YOU, my friend always offer thoughtful comments which is the way to do it, obviously having read the poem carefully, letting it soak in and so on...Okay! ENOUGH with rambling already...

Well Casarah, as much as I LOVE being a PS member, it's a game when it comes to getting comments and as most of us know, that game is: Comment-comment-comment and you will get many in return thus becoming one of the more popular poets...There are handful of exceptions that come to mind (Ruben O, Charma and Carrie Richards come to mind) Andrea comments often but she doesn't do it to be popular but only because she cares..Gonna have to continue this because I will soon run out of room in this little box...

Hi Cas. I learned that the very lifeblood of PoetrySoup, or any community for that matter is the constant interaction between members through reading and leaving a comment. Most poets appreciate that we take the time to initiate the process. One need not use superlatives unless he/she really feels the poem is great. An honest but tactful observation goes a long way. I exhort other newbies (I being relatively new myself) to "keep writing, keep posting and start visiting other pages and be an encouragement as well". Some follow the advice while others don't. If by chance you comment on mine first, I do my best to read yours ASAP. If you have not posted lately, I will go to your old writes.

Precisely Ian...had it not been for the encouragement of these fine gentlemen and ladies of soup, poem after poem, I do not think I'll still be here to finally receive your, I'm sure kind of well-meaning and brutally honest comment. People like David Meade and Richard Lamoureux for their sincere encouragement, Andrea Dietrich and Debbie Guzzi who take time to send soupmails for constructive input or two.

For contest winners, we must admit that reading and leaving a comment for each and every winner in a list of 30 is quite difficult. I tend to check out first the works of those who comment on mine and slowly work down the list which may take several days. That is, if there’s only one result for the day. It’s a different story for days when there are 2 or 3 results. For a list of just 10 or so, it is easier to read all and comment in one sitting. Other times I get comments the minute I post a poem and always, always, that first person who took his/her time gets my most profound gratitude. Other times comments are slow, and one understands these things. Great blog!
Date: 7/20/2015 8:53:00 PM
Oh Casarah I would love to find one of your lovely poems with no comments, then, I could be intimate with this poem, wrap my arms around it,hug it, caress it,while sipping wine and savor every delicious word thinking all these words are just for me me me me!!!!! Hugs :)

Aww sugar, that is such a wonderful comment, now I'm searching trying to find a poem for you to cuddle with tonight. You have an amazing way of reaching out and commenting on other poets works, is there any poems that you wrote that you think got eclipsed and needs a little more sunlight shone on it?
Date: 7/20/2015 5:43:00 PM
Casarah, depending on the time of day I post a poem it can get lost easily and if I post more than a few a day for contest for example one may not get very much attention that is the case for my poem, Stretching my M U S E, it only got two comments, I usually get tons of comments and try my best to return a comment to each person who took the time to comment on me, I find newbies have not figured this out yet that to get you have to give

Actually .. it was your poem stretching my muse that inspired this blog, funny thing is, when I'm on my phone reading, I have a hard time commenting, but I noticed your poem and thought, that is odd, you only had a couple of comments and it was an awesome poem. I meant to go back when i got home and say so, but then it slipped my mind. I know it struck me as odd, and that is what I'm looking for here, that write that someone has that they think, what the heck where is everyone this was a good poem! I like reading you even if I don't get a chance to comment, your words dance on my screens
Date: 7/20/2015 5:27:00 PM
<3 Casarah, I don't give butterflies, long ago I learn we have groups on this site. I will not push a comment to he/she when visiting their poem unless they have nothing to fear. others will not even take the time I or others do to acknowledge one another, without trying to skip a beat. They want to gripe, yet they never even try. I keep my visits small and simple, to those who keep things in their own circle. no need to stress and try to impress another eye. Either I like it or not. I'm going to get real here, I will give any poet my attention and time, if and when they want it. I will continue to give my support, with or without a reaction. No need in giving something that is not wanted. I don't care how good the poem is. If someone wants to be read they will read others in return. I go through contest like no tomorrow. Not only to view or pass by, but I think we are all equal and everyone deserves to be read and congratulated. Especially, since everyone has nice poems on a winning list. Sadly, I see, poets will only congratulate the top 3 or 5. Better yet, they will only visit he/she they think is worthy of his/her comment. Sad but true... Anyways. Nice blog, glad I can be a part of it.

To answer your other questions. :-) have you ever had one of those days like "where is everyone"? ((my answer** I will post and leave most of the time. Poets will look for me eventually)) When you first started on the soup did you have those frustrating moments, like here I am, hello...anybody out there? ((my answer**I never had the problem, I was a hit righaway. Not because I was amazing, it was because I was an internet virgin. LOL, It was awesome to meet other poets for the first time.)) and is it that persistent effort to read and comment that gets you in everyone sights? ((my answer** it's the name. SKAT ... I don't give much effort on this site. My swag's what keeps me in sight.)) if I was to tell you my secret you would not believe me..... hahaha

Continue- Casarah, I was a newbie poet's like Carol B, AndreaD. and Linda Marie (Rest her soul) stood by and offered nonstop support. I found friends Like Nathan, CA., Billy, Amy, -RO at the time- and a guy named Frank. Who encouraged me to stay and ignore the bully. Anyways, I'm doing fine right, I was inactive for a year. If my account was active, it was because I have a nosy sister who can't keep out. LOL. I'm on top because I like others to feel welcomed as I did when I first joined the soup. I'm nothing more than a poet still learning, I don't consider myself on top of the ladder, I'm afraid of heights. I'm just active that is all.

Well, Casarah, It was hard to enjoy this site when I first join, I got attacked one month after joining the site. A certain poet felt threatened because I got attention rather fast. She had many followers who bullied my poems right away. I was deeply hurt, cuz I did not know how to navigate this site. I know it is a shock. A few poets viewed the attacks. The one initiating the attacks is silent right now. She was under the impression I had no idea she was the one condoning the attacks on my poems. Some came to my aid, others joined the rat queen, I'm only calling it as it is.

From the outside looking in, I see how many people get discouraged, so I'm not nitpicking, or whining on my own behalf, just curious on other peoples perspectives on the social structure of the site. How important is spectacular writing and style compared to feeding the social beast. and since you are on the top of the ladder how you've managed to get there. ;)

I have been singing this song forever, Casarah. How people need to learn to network and get back to seeing each other's poetry. My biggest pet peeve here is when someone comes to do a blog saying, "poor me, nobody is reading my stuff." People who work at it WILL get read, and if they don't, send them to me. I will read them!! But I won't do it forever. they will have to do some work as well! I have more than a few poet friends whose every single poem I have seen. Some with ten pages or more. I am dedicated to my friends!! that is what I love about it here!! Thanks for your blog to spread the word!

That is a great way to look at it. I know some people get busy with life, the universe, and everything. There is quite a bit that disappears off the list rather quickly. I hope that more interaction motivates all members. It does take work, lots and lots of work, but everything does. You're awesome Andrea, it is a treat when you come to my pages, I appreciate it :)
