we are not the doer
yet are tasked to act
we look for guidance
by God’s hand backed

heart flutters that arise
signals ego’s manifest
perhaps for this reason
earth life continues to test

Only He Can

I can’t build
the bridge
But I can cross it
when asked

I can’t mark
the trail
But I can follow
when tasked

I can’t light
the fire
But I can warm
in its glow

I can’t walk
on water
But I can bathe
in its flow

I can’t play
the harp
But know an Angel
with hands

I can’t save
the masses
But love a Savior
— who can

A Qualitative Report on a Single Subject Ego Death

Hypothesis:
What is an ego anyways
Are we born with it
And from the moment we have the willpower
we’re tasked with muting it
Or does it grow from experiences of rejection
Fed by whom?
Is it intrinsically preserving,
Extrinsically repelling…
For the sake of avoiding philosophical debate
Let’s say we have an agreed upon theory

Experiment:
I’d like to think my ego dissolved
The moment my mother dropped me
From her arms before I ever had a chance to challenge Piaget’s concept of object permanence
And when I plummeted to reality
I landed upon the selfless idea
That if their need for affirmation
Could supersede my need for survival
Then I could keep from ever falling so tragically again

Analysis:
And though ego death happens in silence
It’s showboating that sustains ego life
Suppose one without the death
could never question their impulses.
Without an initial fall
The ego can’t even see it’s own reflection

a question is asked
and we are so tasked
to ignite a mind
yet in ego’s bind

we let silence speak
that thus a sneak peek
to soul be revealed
when focus be steeled

the cosmic dancer
becomes the answer
flowing on with ease
and thus questions cease

The treasurer they called Judas,
In his folly and imprudence,
Sold his Master for silver’s stock;
The shepherd who betrayed the flock.

The fisherman they called Peter,
Tasked to build the Church and lead her,
To be her foundational rock;
The shepherd who cares for the flock.

The scholar widely known as Saul
Adopted the new name of Paul;
He saw the light on one long walk,
Repentant hunter of the flock.

An Editor Grills a Cub Reporter

“You got the goldfish interview, as asked?”
“I did, sir, but he lacked the wherewithal
to answer me coherently, I fear.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? The fishing section
is looking pretty thin. You showed up masked?”
“Of course I did. That goldfish flu’s no joke.
He said he’s scared of casual infection.”
“Your killer question, then? Your master stroke?”
“What is the capital of Senegal?
My curver, that one: it’s my knuckle-ball.”
“You got a cogent answer?” “Nowhere near.
He knew, he said, but couldn’t now recall.”
“His love life? Did you ask?” “He yelled, objection!
He said, that’s why he hates newspaper folk.”
“But that’s the very thing with which you’re tasked –
to get the sexy stuff! You think he’s *****?”
“He said he’d tell me after taking coke.
It seemed to me a little circumspection
might do the trick.” “Unmitigated gall
is what I call it. What I want to hear
is, if he’s in that witness thing – protection.”
“I got the feeling he was trying to stall –
I probed him, but he had no recollection.”

Zelle or Venmo

Before I had a credit card,
My car, newly repaired,
Required cash to pick it up
And I was unprepared.

I borrowed money, then I got
A MasterCard - hooray!
It changed my means of payment,
Which I still do use today.

Along with checks and cash, that card
Could pay for all I’d need
And up until quite recently,
It seemed that way, indeed.

But then there was some money
That I wanted to convey
And a credit card or check
Just wouldn’t be a way to pay.

Then how ‘bout Zelle or Venmo?
Was the question I was asked.
Alas, I called my son and
For this favor, he was tasked.

It isn’t fair that things that worked
For years no longer do
And with this new technology,
I do not have a clue.

What's My Line

My husband and I watch a show
Which was aired quite a long time ago –
In 1955;
(Were you even alive?)
Think of all that those folks didn’t know!

For a panel of four had to guess
Occupations, so they would address
Guests with questions for clues
About topics they’d choose
To be answered with “No” or with “Yes.”

Certain jobs were exotic back then,
Like “psychiatrist” (strictly for men)
Or a skunk-breeding guy
Or a worm raiser (why?)
Which led up to the big moment when…

It was time for the mystery guest,
Who would leave everybody impressed;
So the panel was masked
For, of course, they were tasked
With a name-that-celebrity quest.

In the days before Google and such,
Which today is a much-needed crutch,
Simple games could be played
And intelligence weighed
In a manner with which we’ve lost touch.

the new regime

Their New Regime

When I read what the high and mighty say
they come across as having no understanding
how the lesser people see the world
An overprivileged person called JFK. j
told us that the Palestinian people were
overrepresented on the world's stage, and that
Israel had offered to give the people
of Gaza greenhouse so they would become
self-sustainable growing their own tomatoes
To his amazement, Hamas turned down this
offer, but insisted on becoming a state that
that included the West Bank and East Jerusalem
This person called JFK, senior didn't grasp  this
this simple wish, but continued  defending Israel
who only wanted the best for the Gaza people
except for freedom
This man JFK, je who has been tasked to control
the health service of the USA is an eccentric
amateur, he is an idiot savant; we must not give
him to power to potentially kill millions of people

Holiday Limericks

	A Red-Letter Day

Staid pilgrims grew leery, Thanksgiving Day,
When men came to feast, half-covered in hay.
	"Where's Hester?" wives asked
	And elders were tasked
To march to the barn and give her an A.

	Santa Goes Truant

With trollop hand-picked and madam well-paid,
Dear Santa was truant from the parade.
	He ho-hoed, "so what?
	I'm old with a gut,
So do this perhaps just twice a decade."

As the sun was wandering the skies
It came upon the Crucifixion, and had to close its eyes
The day that God in Jesus Christ reconciled us to His side
The sun had to withhold its rays and hide
At noon the darkness did ascend
The words of Christ did amend:
(“Father forgive them their worst”, “I Thirst”
“Today in Paradise you will be with Me”
“My God My God why hast thou forsaken Me”
“Woman, behold thy son.”, “It is done”
“Father, into Thy hands My spirit I commend”)
The Sun of Righteousness shines without end
From A to Z, He rules all of history
Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil
But why do you allow it and ordain
The unjust and the just to be blessed by rain.
The prophet Habakkuk has asked
Why are we always to be tasked?
Roust Yourself, Lord awake
Take your hand from Your bosom and give the Earth a shake

child of promises
among those near or far aged
a light of conscience

shining glow well stored
purpose in truth to others
true to his loved ones

angels tasked his care
Michael and Gabriel there
darkness and sin kept away

never in danger
a Father afar yet near
constant everlasting life
