Springer Poems

Premium MemberLittle Bit

Little Bit waddles and limps downstairs at the sound of my voice. Barks at the hyperactive English Springer with all the fervor of Boris, the Russian Wolfhound, of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp fame.

the scruffy old stud
with four legs close to the ground -
wisdom’s on his side

Premium MemberOur Beloved Ben

Ben,our springer,brown & white
Was our teen-daughter's delight;
Bred by the famous Shand-Kydd
Causing us to part with fifty quid.

He soon grew, chewing lino & chairs
Forever racing up our stairs;
We'd no idea what he would become
This stress-filled harum-scarum.

A sporting dog,much too inbred
So to the vet,our footsteps led;
A day so filled with tears,
Engraved upon all our yesteryears.

Springer Pup

We are with a young springer called Flo
living up to her name in full flow.
     Dancing on her lead
     she's longing to speed,
for there's nothing she'll miss with her nose.

Premium MemberThat Dog Don T Hunt

My son-in-law’s and daughter’s dynamic duo dogs:

THAT DOG DON’T HUNT

Fond of saying, that dog don’t hunt,
yet his Springer flies through the air
with the greatest of ease, not a trace
of his size. Like Clifford, the renowned
big-red-dog, he has no idea his scope,
lacks grace — compares himself to
Little Bit. As if

there’s hawks in the house, you must
watch when sitting on the couch.
Tripp is eyeing you, his vantage point,
ready to take off, at your slightest weakness.

If he’s shutoff downstairs, he’s at the tippy-top
raising Cain; or outside, his nose’s pressed
to the sliding door. He melts your heart,
Aw, let him in… he’s the kingpin,
the checkmate, yet Little Bit

bares his teeth, old pepperpot
encourages his own rub —

quite the doggy stew. we love…

Soon, we were given Bess
Collie-cross,black & white,no less;
Perfect in temperament,ready to please
Walking her,my mind at ease.

Each night to her bean bag she crept
In the kitchen , cosy,she slept;
Welcomed all with wagging tail
Without faults,she could not fail.

A pet no one would ever trade
Her memory now in cross-stitch made;
Loyalty of the lasting,loving kind
No replacement,were we to find.

A Day In America West

Buckaroos wave in the wagons into a corral, circle of
Conestoga wagons mixed with covered wagons 100 count,
Next to the butte, a springer delivers calf alive; compadres cheer wahoo!
Exuberance looking at large remuda, choosing each a horse to mount.

Morning sun illuminates camp as mozo helps secure on a horse the rig,
Saddle up with aparejo and alforja to work on the range, the keen
Vaqueros mill the running cattle into a circle, and bulldog the doggie
Pulling down the calf to avoid the barranca deep ravine.

Noontime hot sun heats frijoles, huevos rancheros, and beef or lunch,
Cowboys drift cattle slowly ranch side, buckaroo pulls in the doggie stray calf,
Moving away from the coulee ravine towards the crick,
Dragonflies zoom near as waddys punch cattle herding,
     resounding a hooray laugh.

Evening warm summer sun lights adobe viga roof beam end rustic,
Acequia irrigation canal greens the bolson flat arid valley,
Olla earthenware pot full of water complement hoedown and dinner,
Ramada shelter branches on roof give rest to camp, peaceful tally.

City Water

Risen
From the springtime flooding along South MLK
A sh#t-skinned slimy pipe
Pops half way up from a grimy hole
Like a gopher molded from iron ore

Neck and head periscoping left then right
Tiny arms bolted to its furry chest of rust
Surveying the silence of this industrial prairie
And the graves pocked from Foundry hammers

Until a school bell bangs
And a kaleidoscope gang of cell phone kids
Clamber from broken windows and dim doorways
To play in this forbidden park
Riding and rocking the new springer like a rodeo bronco

Screwing
The old boss back to its subterranean foundation
Another generation
Re-connecting the muddy wells to our silver faucets.

WINTER WONDERLAND

The snowmen line the silent street at night.
Their bright smiles gleam with frozen teeth of stone.
Until the crackle of a bunny’s light —
its paws so sweetly greet the dark alone.
His fluffy fur, does mimic, soft snow sown.
His beady red eyes blink at Jack Frost’s throne.

Then dawn spurs pinkish pride upon the land.
The sun does tease a melt, but won’t deprive
the children’s vacation of all ‘tis planned.
They dash with suits and gloves and boots to drive
their old and new gay sleighs, red cheeks alive —
the snow does fly, like buzzing bees of hive.

The wild prints scar, delight, the cache of snow.
A springer gnaws the fallen carrot prize.
The skates relentlessly slide to and fro,
the cheers of fright and glee from hills arise.
At bottom rung — sure thing — a snowball flies.
As moms call each, they sigh and wave sad byes.

This Winter wonderland delights all things.
At angel’s excitement, the church bell rings.

Sit Transit Gloria Mundi

Sit Transit Gloria Mundi
Rick Folker

Our current consumptive culture
Salivates over
"Tech" and "Cell" and "Screen"
That transmits the lurid, pornographic
Apocalyptic scenes.

We long for the end
Of the endless 24/7 hollow info
Hoping, even praying that
The Moral Arc would start to bend.

The dreadful, the destitute in their death throes
Are caught by our ever-present lens;
The Schadenfreude tourist
Documenting the world's worsening
woes.

We check off the trauma
As part of our Holy Bucket List
And tune in and tune out of another
Kardashian/Jerry Springer blitz.

All along we lurch from crisis to crisis
Bankers scot free, Blacks burned in worship
While blaming the ever-elusive Isis

White supremacy in the land of the free?
The clown in the White house doesn't get it ....

Or does he

America

With the grandeur of prairies and canyon
With Georgian welcomes from Springer Mountain
With cooler welcomes of Katahdin
America rises with five million feet

To exult among more mosses, mammals, trees
Than have survived in spaces smaller than countries
A president named Teddy signed off on it
America rises with these five million feet

With delirious descent of peregrines
With the swooping swish of eagles with fish
With raising and saving whooping cranes
America still rises across millions of feet

Grace as in the disappearing Chestnut
Timelessness and wonder in the redwood
Gifts of Euphorbia, Aster, Camelia
America rises in chlorophyll and feet

With red and green blood that will unify
With Hibiscus threatened by goats in Hawaii
America rises and falls from view
America for all, always preserved by the few

You Have My Permission To Shoot Me

( … if you catch me doing one of these.)

Naming any baby Finton,
voting for Hillary Clinton,
complimenting Nascar,
moving to Nebraska,
using "literally" to mean "very",
calling Derry Londonderry,
uttering the word "redact",
claiming Johnny Depp can act,
saying society's to blame,
mentioning fifteen minutes of fame,
feeling sorry for Amanda Knox,
watching anything on Fox,
or even one second of Jerry Springer,
making speech marks with my fingers,
drinking alcohol alone,
admiring Sharon Stone,
labelling anyone a pagan,
sighing "bring back Ronald Reagan",
playing Rod Stewart's "We Are Sailing",
paying money to see Van Halen ...
(and if ever, instead of clever,
I say smart,
I promise to wear -
right there -
a target across my heart.)

Watch Tv So You Don'T Have To Think

Watch T.V., so you don't have to think.

I could be dead tomorrow, but today I'm alive,
So right now, I truly am willing to strive;
To get all I want, before death comes to take me,
So show me Heaven on Earth, you beautiful lady.

But don't give me a baby, or a headache,
Don’t waste our precious time together,
Watching repeats of Ricki Lake.
Or Jerry Springer, or even Oprah.
No I don't want to watch another soap!
Or something so soulless and devoid of inspiration.
Could you put on some tunes and turn off the television?

Just play me some music, by someone who has something to say
And let me fall in love, with a single lyric today.
By an intelligent lyricist, with a funky beat,
That makes us tap our feet and shake our thang.
Do you get me? Capiche? Do you understand what I'm saying?

Or are you too drunk, to care anymore,
I'm sorry, I'll shut up, I'm obviously a bore,
That you have to ignore, so here's the remote,
I think I'll just leave and go write a book.

1998

i ride to work four days a week
one hour each way.
i don’t like it
but i take the ride.
jerry springer is on the t.v. nightly
i don’t like it
but i watch.
somewhere in between…
of aryan dreams
black power screams
brown men plying in trade
mobile laboratories
moon over the mesas
the valley stretched out below
mountainside condos
trailer park bimbos
babies still die in the ghetto.
