The Upper Wealthy
It was said that famous families
only lasts for about three generations
The Churchills, the Kennedys, and many
Others have a sale by date.
I thought of that while watching a program by
Crise Hedges, who happens to have grown up
among the stratospheric wealthy, and he
spent time trying to distance himself from
that class of people
He can't, everything about his language
manner, the smoothness of those who have
not had to strive
Cris was interviewing a man who writes
books about the rich, who, according to
him are bad for our society and economy
Clearly, the rich are different from those who have
No private plane when going shopping
They send children to the top school in a limo
They have a big household staff to keep
them in clover, and security, to be rich also
Mean someone is out to do your harm
The two men began annoying me, telling
stories about the wealthy, sounding like
a couple trying not to sound envious

I look at my old hand
Blotches of liver spots, slow-running blood vessels
Delivering old blood so I can fold my hands
Once they caressed a woman`s body, who moaned
And my hands were firm
Women used to see me and smile, but now I walk
The earth unobserved and words become a long silence.
If I tell you how much I miss making love
to sit in the park with a girl and see the moon while
smoking cigarettes, inhaling its promise of love to come
The aroma of her hair, the smoothness of her thighs
to kiss her libido and drink her sweet water, her legs
Apart, she has given herself to me.
Asleep, enfolded we are, tomorrow is far away.
My old hands remember so much, I bow my head and try
to inhale from my hands what once was
It is all so hopeless, and soon enough I will be dead.

When it came to iambic pentameter
Alexander Pope was no dumb amateur.
In his strict use of it he achieved a skill
often with a monotonous overkill –
a danger every poet should not commit
unless he likes his thoughts in a straitjacket,
and the flow so turgid and mechanical
the line will cease to sound natural –
more strident, unmellifluous and harsh
like a stomping, goose-stepping march.
Now here’s a fast and easy suggestion
to unclog a line’s bumpy congestion
which Pope and other poets used to great
effect when they deemed it appropriate :
they added an extra syllable or stress
which opened it and gave it smoothness.
These little extras acted like a breach
and made the line read like spoken speech.
It may not work even with a first try
and take it from me, it’s not a lie.
In fact, you may require a new line or couplet
to be rewritten with a little extra sweat.
But, hey, think back to when you started writing
how many drafts required no editing?

So can there be a dreamlike place
Where sympathy controls?
Where friendly kindness fills the space
No traps or tricks or holes.
A place where treachery slides away
And smoothness paves the path today
For those who have no sense of ease,
Whose struggles never cease?
Yes, yes, indeed, there is a place
Where hopes and future have a face.
Not made of things, nor merely matter
Not loads and loads of useless chatter.
Good hope is real in reach of all
Whose voices call, their needs confessing
And then proceed to trust the love
The sacrificial Calvary love of Jesus,
Precious Jesus.

And can there be another place
Where love and kindness find their space
A place where carefulness controls
Where tricks and treachery
Fall in holes
And smoothness paves
The daily paths
Of those
Who have no sense of ease,
Whose struggles never seem to cease?
Yes, indeed, there is a place
Where hopes and future have a face.
Not made of things not merely matter
Not loads and loads of useless chatter.
True hope is real
In reach of all
Whose voices call
Confessing need
And then proceed
To trust that love
That holy love
Of precious, precious Jesus.

while i was passing by
in aisle five
i overheard
“get help”
she happened to glance at me
and by 6:03
i happened to think
what if she said
“get well”
and i don’t know who
and i wasn’t there
but i know
when i’ve heard it before
if it wasn’t condescendingly
had one pound of empathy
i would’ve been
more likely
we all have days
that get swept in the haze
of just trying to stay alive
2 steps forward, 1 step back
but it feels like rewinding 5
after drawing a circle or two
you wish you didn’t need to be doing footwork your whole life
it’s like a birthday balloon
in a crowded room
it’s all up in the air
the balloon falls down
you look around
and wonder if you all have circles there
in the clouds
but with the crowd
sometimes you hear in the way they speak
the toughened clay
they molded that day
to prevent from appearing weak
you feel the way it sounded
they’re trying to keep it grounded
you see the smoothness of their rock
because they’re silently wearing the erosion
it took for them
to become that soft

Let me tell you of a journey- from The Parthenon to Paris
in the springtime - of which real year, no one knew
Riding on an ostrich guided by a gilded leather bridle
traveling back roads dressed in mysterious disguises
using signals only ostrich riders do.
The endurance of the ostrich was as equally surprising as
the smoothness of its gallop on the road.
It needed very little in the way of daily edibles
while the softness of its feathers made a very comfy saddle.
Now an ostrich made an eerie sight in swaying fields of daffodils.
Its three-pronged feet so admirable for climbing alpine hills.
It handled every mountain as well as any Hannibal
with eyes adept to guide a sleepy rider while he slept.
The gallop into Paris was singularly memorable –
No wildly cheering crowds of proud Parisians-no-one knew-
No showers of cherry blossoms sprinkled from the Eiffel Tower
in praise or celebration of this epic ostrich rider.
What evidence is there, then? What memory endures
Perhaps a photograph or witness tells the tale
If the novelty is forgotten and the mists of time have passed
Could fields of daffodils remember or perhaps the Cherry blossoms?

Imagine a place
Where no discrimination exists
Where there is no topic of color or race
Imagine a place
Devoid of judgment and despair
Devoid of criticisms, differences, and nasty glares
Imagine a place
That doesn’t compare
The way we walk and what we wear
In this place, it does not matter
The texture of smoothness or roughness of hair
In such a place, all would be fare
In knowing that the root is the commonality we share
that will always connect us to the skin we bear

walking through life as as a black person,
the world needs to understand
we rock with a rhyme, we bop with a beat
we jive like a jazz band
we improvise on the fly
we adapt to any situation
we can spit a rhyme in real time
and connect with a combination
we can create out of chaos
we can take trash and turn it into treasure.
we can see beauty in the midst of bedlam
and turn dissonance into sounds of pleasure
to journey through life as a black person
we march to the beat up our own drums
we always have a song in our hearts
we are musical phenomenons
we are the deepness of the base
we are the sexiness of the saxophone
we are the smoothness of the violin
we are the richness of the trombone
we have the versatility of the piano
we're the lead guitar that gives the melody
we are the trumpets in life that blow
with much power and intensity
we are the rhythm, we are the rhyme
we are the harmony
we are black people journeying through life
with a musical propensity
so keep shining, keep grinding
keep moving with all that jazz
because walking through life as the black person
just means we have much pizzazz

Our Words
Miracle Man
8/25/2024
A glib tongue is often remembered,
for speech it rendered toward another.
Rarely for the smoothness of it’s delivery,
our words can uplift but also smother.
We damage hearts that may never mend,
though apology is made if we show concern.
But words are like arrows in one respect,
like arrows, words loosed, cannot return.

In hushed greenhouses, a marvel grows,
A pilgrimage for those who know:
A rose unmarred by nature's thorns,
Its beauty is pure, as morning dawns.
I dreamed of its stem, a silken cord,
Coiled gently around my hands, unexplored.
My garden once bristled with spiky guards,
Till obsession smoothed those prickly shards.
From root to tip, I bred them bare,
Strength redefined in petals fair.
If thorns meant power, then power's changed,
In vulnerability, strength rearranged.
This thornless bloom, a rare delight,
Wields beauty like a beacon bright.
Its petals unfurl, a gentle shield,
Revealing truths long concealed.
When touched, it stands, unharmed and tall,
A flower-warrior, breaking thrall
From old beliefs of strength through pain,
Its peaceful stance is a greater gain.
In dreams, I graft this wonder's stem
To roses in my garden's hem.
Together we walk through skeptics' sneers,
Our smoothness calms ancient fears.
Behold the power of gentleness,
In this rose's thornless dress.
A testament to nature's art:
True strength blooms from an open heart.

Pieces of broken glass gathered in ocean
undergoing gradual conversion
by metaphoric changes through ages.
As processed by rigorous vigorous rolling
under turbulence and tremendous pressure,
rough edges to get rounded off producing smoothness,
lastly happens to yield sea glass :
Nature ‘s marvel and splendour.
Glossy texture to claim : lovely looks of a gem,
with frosted appearance.
Trash turning treasure, nourished by ocean.
An accomplished sequel on transformation .
One can't surmise : Splendid surprise !
Available on some beaches not in abundance,
but bare fact : not so rare!
By chance , I glanced to pick up prompt
ignoring envious looks of my friends.
I collected few from sea beach in Puri, Orissa, India.
I feel proud to own
those, comparable to precious gem stones.
