Reframe the vision they see of your life
make it seem real easy put on a show;
They tend to wield your past just like a knife;
Selfies and status updates you outgrow
reset the loop just let them think they know;
Create an illusion laced with control;
Put those vacant views into a black hole,
walk away turn your back on what’s toxic;
What is visible is never the whole;
Just stack that deck become a magic trick.

A tad jealous
A tad hurt
A tad feeling of slight
A comment offered, and considered
A response maybe tinged with a little spite
Conversation ends
Confidence takes a hit
Mood takes a plunge
My heart strings tugged a bit
How can you just pull the curtain when you welcome her familiar face?
Someone to share a couple days and nights
Lie beside you in that empty space
But, this is not your first performance
Nor is this, my first magic show
I really should know all the tricks by now
Doorbell! Quick! Put on that smiley 'Hello'
Pull that rabbit out of your hat
Shoo those true feelings back in their places
Safeguard them tightly, behind that mask
Lest they be revealed, or worse, displaced
The emotional carpet ride begins
When your weekend companion appears
One wave of your magic wand
And that's my cue to disappear
3, 2, 1...Poof

The Magic Trick of Checking Out
By David J Walker
Now you see ‘em
Now you don’t
The magic trick of
Checking out
Leaving familiar traces of
A Lived life
Lived like
Only they could live
Now you want to
But you won’t
Say the things you
Meant to say
What was the final count of
The heartbeats,
The breaths you breathed,
The steps taken in your
Whole life
Leaving faint footprints
With all the others
Turned to dust
Did you leave food
In the fridge
Expecting another meal?
What happened to the
Weight of your body
Consumed in
The funeral pyre
What may we learn
From the ashes in the urn
Where you hide
Until we release you
Into the wind over the
Mountain
Once we saw you
Now we won’t
In the full view
Of a church pew
Where you prayed for
Reconciliation
Would you mind if
I took this seat
At least for
Another few years?

Growing up in a racist world
Doesn't matter if your a boy or a girl
It will never change, it's all the same
People enjoy inflicting pain
Hurt feeling's for saying the wrong word
People really are disturbed
It was bad, but now it's worse
The past is a horrific curse
People protest and scream and yell
Living in their own personal hell
Keep trying to find a fix
Emotions are extremely mixed
It's all a massive magic trick
